Friends awful baby name

ThisIcyHare · 01/01/2025 16:26

My best friend is due to have a baby soon, they are having a girl and she has been talking baby names with me, which feels super special. She has got a few very lovely traditional girly names, and a couple of more unusual choices, but not ‘offensive’. They are names I would expect from her. However, she has one absolutely terrible name, that actually just feels very cruel. It would be bad even by American standards and ‘tragedeigh’ names. It’s not that I wouldn’t choose it, it’s just crazy stupid and the child will be ridiculed by peers and adults. Some of her choices are genuinely wonderful, but I’m so worried she will madly choose this one awful name, I can’t say anything can I?!

Marlana backwards?

If you type it with a space between each letter it won't be googleable.

Is it Precious? I think it is a popular name in Nigeria and Ghana. I really like it.

Precious, Blessing, Promise, Cherish, we love em. We (Nigeria) had a president named ‘Good Luck’.

Ceramiq · 01/01/2025 17:37

I think it's absolutely fine to point out that someone's unborn baby name choice is awful providing you have data and evidence for that.

They're such beautiful names. I love "Blessing".

Why cant you tell her what you think. You’ve said she’s sharing names with you ( although I dont get what’s “super special “ about that?) so presumably she wants your views. You dont need to be hurtful , just say something like ‘ Whoah! That’s a bit out there! What’s made you think of that?”

Not just special…SUPER special!!

WellsAndThistles · 01/01/2025 17:37

Tell us in the hope your friend googles it and they'll assume their younique name isn't that younique after all.

If she is still deciding and has involved you in the discussion then I think you csn absolutely say I'm not keen on xyz, but I love your nether choices. And if she asks why csn tell her you think it's a bit too unusual and likely to get bullied for it.
You can do it tactfully, just don't laugh in her face and tell her it's awful and she must be insane.
Basically don't criticise it so hard that it will be awkward if she chooses it anyway, but gently make it clear you aren't a fan.

This thread is nothing without the name! Honesteigh/Honestleigh

Verity?

ohyesido · 01/01/2025 17:17

I went to school with a Verity and a Felicity.

It's not Papaya is it? Apparently that translates to something non-fruit in another language

Verity is a lovely name.

No! It’s not honour, charity, faith. It’s like Integrity.

Kintegrity? Mintegrity? Zintegrity?

Echoing all the others - no name = pointless thread

Fanny or Willy.

Is it Comfort? That's a lovely virtue name imo, one of the TAs at DS school is a Comfort, hearing the kids say it is very sweet.

And her sister Lenor.
@IVbumble wins with Diversity.
I nominate Lukkeedip

Oh no, think ‘Integrity’. That’s where this is going! I’m not badmouthing actual names!

Hmm. This is reminding me of a baby name I encountered through work which caused me a bit of trouble. If it is the one I am thinking of here is a cautionary tale.

I can't give too many details so as to be outing.

Anyway I used to support a computer system that collected data in a healthcare setting. Every month certain details would be extracted from the system and put in to a file, which was then opened and used in an Excel spreadsheet. This system had been in place and working perfectly OK for years.

One day the customer who used it rang to say that in this month's report, all was OK apart from one entry where the name simply would not show in the spreadsheet. Anyway, I identified the entry and on looking at their details commented to the customer "Oh I think you have just entered this baby's name wrong. Where you expect to see the forename it says True".

"That's right", she replied "Her name is True"

Well guess what happens if you have a cell in an Excel spreadsheet with the value True? Yup, it is displayed as 1.

Took me quite a bit of faffing about to work around that one, while muttering curses about parents who give their children names that break other people's spreadsheets.

LumpyandBumps · 01/01/2025 17:40

Is it Probity?

HugoYorway · 01/01/2025 17:40

@Lighteningstrikes , Hero is a girl's name.

Yes, I've just checked - Goodluck Jonathan. I thought it Goodluck Johnson but realise I'm wrong. I think they're lovely names.

ThisIcyHare · 01/01/2025 16:33

I can’t say the name just in case she sees it, it’s too obvious. I’m sorry! Hate being that person! It’s just outrageously bad.

Could you give us a list of say 10 made up bad names and include the one she has suggested as one? That shouldn't be too outing.

mathanxiety · 01/01/2025 17:42

BarbaraHoward · 01/01/2025 17:31

But why on earth do you think "bad even by American standards" is an ok thing to write? It just marks you out as someone prejudiced and makes me disregard your opinion.

Same.
Just because US society has far fewer hangups about class and a lot more willingness to embrace the shiny and new doesn't mean people there are less sophisticated or intelligent. People with all sorts of names that wouldn't pass the 'KC test' or the 'Archbishop test' graduate from the top universities, work for NASA, and even write books.

ABigBarofChocolate · 01/01/2025 17:42

My friend did this. Luckily we can shorten it to a nicer name but the child will definitely have a lot of conversations about it when they become an adult.

SiobhanSharpe · 01/01/2025 17:42

For those suggesting Puberteigh, the son in the Addams family tv series and films was called Pubert.
Myself, i think it could be Tru (spelt like that.) Many years ago I knew an American girl called Tru and she was truly awful...

Aydel · 01/01/2025 17:43

I knew a Velocity once. Think her Dad was RAF. And of course, most people heard “Felicity” when introduced, not “Velocity.” I thought it was a great name!

KimberleyClark · 01/01/2025 17:43

Nanny0gg · 01/01/2025 17:31

Most of those are names - and quite pretty ones

If you called your child Justice they would constantly be being mistaken for a judge as an adult!
