Friends awful baby name

My best friend is due to have a baby soon, they are having a girl and she has been talking baby names with me, which feels super special. She has got a few very lovely traditional girly names, and a couple of more unusual choices, but not ‘offensive’. They are names I would expect from her. However, she has one absolutely terrible name, that actually just feels very cruel. It would be bad even by American standards and ‘tragedeigh’ names. It’s not that I wouldn’t choose it, it’s just crazy stupid and the child will be ridiculed by peers and adults. Some of her choices are genuinely wonderful, but I’m so worried she will madly choose this one awful name, I can’t say anything can I?!

Is it Destiny?

speaking as a parent of a Faith and an Honour who is happy with my choices 😊

ghostfacethriller · 01/01/2025 17:26

Oooh I knew a Felicity and a Verity years ago - I'll say no more but I wonder if we went to the same school as they are not common names!

Honor is a great name, popular in Ireland I believe way back when. I had a great, great aunt named either Honoria or Honor and I considered Honor as a possible name choice. But as you've said it's not OP, I'll shut up 😁

No! It’s not honour, charity, faith. It’s like Integrity.

Ask your friend if she wants your honest opinion than tell her Honor is a horrible name😉

Hankunamatata · 01/01/2025 17:27

Is it one of the virtues - faith, hope, charity, patience, prudence, justice, fortitude, temperance etc

Myfluffyblanket · 01/01/2025 17:27

Parsimony ?

Oh these are so beautiful. I think Pewberteigh needs to be a boys name though. Just getting that vibe.

You could also shorten it to Pewb. Oh thats perfect .

CeceliaImrie · 01/01/2025 17:28

Is it Comfort? That's a lovely virtue name imo, one of the TAs at DS school is a Comfort, hearing the kids say it is very sweet.

Meltedwelly · 01/01/2025 17:28

Veritas

Wakeywake · 01/01/2025 17:29

If it's Virginity you really have to say something

It’s not a ‘made up name’, it’s a word that you’d use, a bit like Integrity. That’s the closest I think I can get without saying what it is

Didn't your face give your thoughts away?

Gonners · 01/01/2025 17:30

Hubris would be lovely for a boy. Vainglory for a girl.

Most of those are names - and quite pretty ones

It’s definitely not just a ‘me’ thing, and I don’t think it’s a wind up. The other choices were so nice, a couple a bit rogue, not to my taste but normal enough, then this one crazy wildcard!

But why on earth do you think "bad even by American standards" is an ok thing to write? It just marks you out as someone prejudiced and makes me disregard your opinion.

DressOrSkirt · 01/01/2025 17:31

I would say something. She's been discussing the names with you to get your opinion surely?

Anxiety has got to be the winner!

Lighteningstrikes · 01/01/2025 17:33

It depends if she would appreciate it or not.

I’ve made the mistake of commenting and with hindsight wish I hadn’t. It made no difference at all as she named the child the name, apart from her remembering my comment.

I also knew someone who called her child Hero after watching Big Hero 6. Poor kid.

IVbumble · 01/01/2025 17:33

Knew a Verity once & her 3 siblings & mum all had V names too.

godmum56 · 01/01/2025 17:34

Anxiety When they get to teenage years then can shorten it to Xi and wander round happily in a fashionable cloud of gender fluidity
