Friends awful baby name

My best friend is due to have a baby soon, they are having a girl and she has been talking baby names with me, which feels super special. She has got a few very lovely traditional girly names, and a couple of more unusual choices, but not ‘offensive’. They are names I would expect from her. However, she has one absolutely terrible name, that actually just feels very cruel. It would be bad even by American standards and ‘tragedeigh’ names. It’s not that I wouldn’t choose it, it’s just crazy stupid and the child will be ridiculed by peers and adults. Some of her choices are genuinely wonderful, but I’m so worried she will madly choose this one awful name, I can’t say anything can I?!

Serendipity?

This has taken me back - this was the fake name I used online back in the early days of using chat rooms and such!

@adamduritzvocalchords , what sold it to me is that it offers so many nn options. Bea-Jay is so cute dontcha think.
The only thing I kinda regret is not taking into account how long it takes to spell it out, but kids today won't be having to do that will they.

MillyHilly99 · 04/01/2025 18:49

I feel like a real friend would say something surely? "I love all those names but x" and explain why.

TheBluntTurtle · 04/01/2025 18:55

is it Renesmee? One for the twilight fans there 😂

What a lucky coincidence 😀

Oh, yes - all the car model names that don't work in every country!

Also, Carens (Kia) means lacking or careless, in Latin; and Pajero (Mitsubishi) means idiot, boorish person or w*nker in Spanish!

My sister had a Pajero many years ago which she adored - if only she’d known!

Vajayjay? 🤔

Bluestockings1 · 04/01/2025 19:37

I know someone who called her baby Chlamydia because she thought it sounded nice.

Chastity? Purification? Immaculata?

I think you’ve nailed it with your first suggestion. I would be quite blunt with a close friend if they were thinking of giving that name to their daughter.

Jones3A · 04/01/2025 22:19

I reckon it could be Chastity

Kira22 · 04/01/2025 23:03

Why can’t you just say it? Highly unlikely your friend will see this or go through all the thread?

if it were my friend and there were other names I liked in her list I’d say I like ..insert name here, and …insert name here but not such a fan of .. insert name here…. Then leave the ball in her court.

I agree with what a lot of peeps have said that you may think it is an awful name and blah blah but maybe it isn’t so bad and maybe the kid will be fine and not be ridiculed at all … wish you could say the name!

BrummieLassie · 04/01/2025 23:09

My friend said she was calling her daughter Kitten, I said that the poor child would have the mickey taken out of her at school and would say things like "Here Kitty Kitty", so she fell out with me big time and hasn't spoken to me for 25 years.

Wow! Classic case of shooting the messenger.

It's not even like Kitten is an unusual but realistic name; it's just not a name for a person. Kitty, maybe; but that's usually only a pet name for a normal name such as Katherine.

Chastity is fine as names go - there are far worse "modern" names.

This sounds like one of those occasions where someone has forgotten that they might be giving birth to a baby, but what they will actually end up with is a miserable 30 year old who has to contend with everyone looking at them and laughing. Kitten - dead cute for a toddling, curly-haired five year old but doesn't always sit so well on a mature woman who wants to be taken seriously (who will, actually, just change her name).

hattie43 · 05/01/2025 17:47

Peregina

SpringIscomingalso · 05/01/2025 19:18
