Friends awful baby name

ThisIcyHare · 01/01/2025 16:26

My best friend is due to have a baby soon, they are having a girl and she has been talking baby names with me, which feels super special. She has got a few very lovely traditional girly names, and a couple of more unusual choices, but not ‘offensive’. They are names I would expect from her. However, she has one absolutely terrible name, that actually just feels very cruel. It would be bad even by American standards and ‘tragedeigh’ names. It’s not that I wouldn’t choose it, it’s just crazy stupid and the child will be ridiculed by peers and adults. Some of her choices are genuinely wonderful, but I’m so worried she will madly choose this one awful name, I can’t say anything can I?!

It’s Destiny

I'm guessing Chastity. In which case, YANBU.

Honor, Patience, Felicity and the other "virtue" names are fine. I did see an Avarice in a book once, which is just awful!

Edited

I love the name Constance. Not so fussed on Prudence.

Sidebeforeself · 01/01/2025 17:12

Why cant you tell her what you think. You’ve said she’s sharing names with you ( although I dont get what’s “super special “ about that?) so presumably she wants your views. You dont need to be hurtful , just say something like ‘ Whoah! That’s a bit out there! What’s made you think of that?”

Justice?

That’s a lovely name for a fine Draught horse 💖

Twotribesgonna · 01/01/2025 17:12

Verity!
please op, just tell us whether the name has been mentioned in this thread. Then we can happily investigate further

CurlyhairedAssassin · 01/01/2025 17:13

Do you know what? I've worked in schools for 15 years. I've seen every type of name. And while I may do an inner snigger the first time I see them on a register, you quickly come to accept the name as totally normal and you can't imagine them being called anything else. I quite like the extremely unusual names.

ShesNotACowShesAFox · 01/01/2025 17:13

Poor kid. I find people who give nouns or adjectives as their children’s name often get the opposite effect. The most miserable person I know is called Joy. I also knew a Prudence (Pru) who made fucking terrible life choices like moving into a commune after knowing a bloke for a week type choices. I reckon Integrity with be a lying fish salesman type 😂 ooh I also knew a Serenity with a really short temper!

EmmaSmiff · 01/01/2025 17:13

Is it Dripfeedia?

Awrite · 01/01/2025 17:13

Precious?

Honesty?

ohyesido · 01/01/2025 17:14

Destiny Chastity and Charity aren't really that unusual.

If it's Heaven Leigh, there are 4 of those at my niece's primary school

duckduckgooseduckagain · 01/01/2025 17:14

Sincerity?

MsReacher2025 · 01/01/2025 17:14

@oakleaffy - you're on fire! Making me laugh out loud. Thank you!

BusyPoster · 01/01/2025 17:14

Honesty

MargaretThursday · 01/01/2025 17:14

I knew a Providence once. I did think "really?" when someone first told me, but I grew to like it. She went by "Ro" when she was older, I think.

YankSplaining · 01/01/2025 17:15

If the word is a positive word, is spelled correctly, and doesn’t rhyme with or sound like a negative word, I think it’s fine. Especially if other people have used it as a name before.

KimberleyClark · 01/01/2025 17:15

Truth? Doesn’t sound that different to Ruth after all!

Is it Precious? I think it is a popular name in Nigeria and Ghana. I really like it.

No! It’s not honour, charity, faith. It’s like Integrity.

honesty, if it was just one in a long list of names I probably would say something.
Not necessarily "wtf are you thinking, do you hate your child?!" but "Wow! That's very....unique! How did you come up with that" or whatever, complete with facial expressions. Then very enthusiastically praise the other names.

Different to if someone has already chosen the name, when it might be more awkward. Surely the whole reason people tell others the shortlist is to get input/views?

although I don't personally think 'Integrity' (I know it's not actually that!) is that bad...

Pewberteigh?
Pheecee?
Deffley?
Eurin?
Phart?
Aynall?

Oh these are so beautiful. I think Pewberteigh needs to be a boys name though. Just getting that vibe.

ghostfacethriller · 01/01/2025 17:16

I would say something if I was concerned, or at least raise my eyebrows. We have friends that were going to give their child a rather overused, girly name and my DH said something along the lines of, 'It's nice, but I can't imagine say, a surgeon or CEO with a name like that.' They ended up using a lovely, traditional name which they really love.
It's usually best to use a traditional name for babies, one with lots of pet forms - so that they can have a bit of flexibility later. My opinion is coloured by my childhood best friend who has a slightly wacky, made up name that she found hard work growing up.

maggiecate · 01/01/2025 17:16

Balonz?

No! It’s not honour, charity, faith. It’s like Integrity.

You could say she'll end up in prison for fraud.

Just something to give her the ick about the name.

mathanxiety · 01/01/2025 17:17

Trutheigh?
Honesteigh?
Sinceriteigh?
Incorruptibiliteigh?
Credibiliteigh?
Ethicaliteigh?

Rectitude? This one has a certain clunky charm.

ohyesido · 01/01/2025 17:17

I went to school with a Verity and a Felicity.

It's not Papaya is it? Apparently that translates to something non-fruit in another language

Andoutcomethewolves · 01/01/2025 17:17

Is it along the lines of patience or chastity?
