To think dogs shouldn't be in pubs?

Orangesinthebag · 01/01/2025 09:47

Yesterday I went to the pub for an afternoon NY Eve drink and couldn't believe the number of people who brought their dog (sometimes two dogs!) with them.

Why is this such a thing now? Can't dogs be left alone any more?
A couple of the dogs were growling at each other and owners were having to drag them apart.
It happens all the time these days - pubs, cafes, restaurants, shops but only a few years ago it would have been so weird and only guide dogs were allowed into places, especially places serving food.

I love dogs but I know several people who are scared of them & find it difficult to have to encounter them everywhere these days.

Is it unreasonable to think dogs should be kept at home?

(Sorry could add a poll for some reason)

I agree. I don't understand why dogs are everywhere now. Even in shops and restaurants. I think these are totally unsuitable places for dogs. It can't be a happy experience for them or for the other customers.

DelicateSoundOfEchos · 01/01/2025 09:49

Go to a pub that doesn't allow them if you don't like being around them.

If a pub owner welcomes dogs then people are quite alright to take their dogs there.

Frowningprovidence · 01/01/2025 09:49

I think dogs are on too many places, but country pubs have always been dog friendly. Not so much town/ city ones

I disagree, dogs make everything better. I’m not a dog owner myself (I understand they take a huge commitment that I just can’t give) but I love seeing other people’s dogs and giving fuss where I can. They seem to gravitate towards me which is why I know I am a good person 😂

MidnightPatrol · 01/01/2025 09:50

Dogs have always been allowed in pubs.

I think if you’re frightened of an animal you are going to see every time you leave the house, you need to get some help coming to terms with that fear.

I think we should ban miserable so-and-sos from pubs.

monkeysox · 01/01/2025 09:50

Yanbu. It's really hard as I'm allergic.
Some arse holes let them sit on train seats.

Optigan · 01/01/2025 09:50

There are plenty of pubs that don't allow dogs - including big chains, such as Wetherspoons, which won't even allow them in its pub gardens - so I think YABU. I'm a dog lover and enjoy meeting people's dogs in pubs - people who don't like dogs should find a pub where they're banned.

Zanatdy · 01/01/2025 09:51

Dogs have always been welcome in pubs. I personally don’t take mine but some people in our walking group do as their dogs are pretty chilled and just lie there.

BCBird · 01/01/2025 09:51

I agree OP.

Personally, I'd prefer a well-behaved dog over a badly behaved child.

Dogs make life better!

coralsky · 01/01/2025 09:52

I prefer dogs lying there than kids running around pubs

Thinkingofaholiday · 01/01/2025 09:52

I’d much rather have dogs in a pub then unruly kids and toddlers.

Fluffywabbits · 01/01/2025 09:52

Agreed - nothing more off-putting than the smell of wet dog as you try to enjoy a drink or meal.

Kaleidoscopic101 · 01/01/2025 09:53

I went to a country pub the other week and a bloke came in on a horse and locals hardly battered an eyelid!

Strikeoutnow · 01/01/2025 09:53

I have never minded dogs in pubs & always expect to see a dog in a pub. However maybe there should be limits on the numbers or people need to train them better because in the last few years the behaviour & noise has changed.

Turophilic · 01/01/2025 09:53

Shops and cafes, I would agree.

But pubs (rural and suburban) have always been more dog friendly and if you don’t like it, there are different places to drink.

Me too.

Schnauzersaremyheros · 01/01/2025 09:54

Ah, first dog moaning post of the new year 😂

Dogs have always been welcome in most pubs, especially the more traditional/rural types. I love that I can take my girl on a nice walk somewhere, and end it with a drink and food in a pub. She is very well behaved (better behaved than a lot of kids we encounter), and just quietly snoozes under the table. She is rather partial to a snack or 2 if the pub has them (which a lot of the pubs we visit do).

If you want dog-free, I believe Wetherspoons can cater for you!

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 01/01/2025 09:54

YANBU and I say this as a dog lover. Why are dogs EVERYWHERE these days? Seriously ridiculous entitled behaviour. I love dogs but have a young child who is scared of them. This fear was actually increased by an idiot owner taking their darling dog out shopping and it attempting to go for my then 2 year old daughter!

Peolle saying go somewhere that doesn't allow them/sit away from them need to realise you'd never leave the house if you avoided all dog accepting places. Also it's not easy to avoid sitting near them in restaurants etc. We've often had to put up with it as it's the only table left. Just leave the dog at home it is a DOG not a child FFS.

Strikeoutnow · 01/01/2025 09:55

their dogs are pretty chilled and just lie there.

Yes, many times I’ve not even noticed a dog because they are so still & quiet but that has changed. However OP you will get lots of replies about noisy dc & how everyone’s dog is perfectly behaved.

Dbank · 01/01/2025 09:55

As a third of UK families have dogs, it makes commercial sense to allow people to bring dogs to pubs.

I regularly do a dog walk with a pub stop at some point, and from my experience the majority of people like well behaved dogs in pubs.

I put my dog on a "rigorous training programme", from a puppy so he would be used to pubs, and it's paid off.

However, I hate seeing large aggressive looking "meat monsters" in my local, especially if they are off the lead, that I think is unreasonable.
