To think dogs shouldn't be in pubs?

Yesterday I went to the pub for an afternoon NY Eve drink and couldn't believe the number of people who brought their dog (sometimes two dogs!) with them.

Why is this such a thing now? Can't dogs be left alone any more?
A couple of the dogs were growling at each other and owners were having to drag them apart.
It happens all the time these days - pubs, cafes, restaurants, shops but only a few years ago it would have been so weird and only guide dogs were allowed into places, especially places serving food.

I love dogs but I know several people who are scared of them & find it difficult to have to encounter them everywhere these days.

Is it unreasonable to think dogs should be kept at home?

(Sorry could add a poll for some reason)

I'd rather see dogs in pubs than unruly children

Orangesinthebag · 01/01/2025 10:06

I stand corrected then - I didn't realise dogs had always been allowed in pubs and I think that is probably because in the past it might have been one or two dogs in a pub so it wasn't as noticeable; now there are so many at one time.

Allowing them in cafes and shops is definitely a new thing, as someone else said, they're everywhere now.

I don't think they equate exactly to children either, that seems bizarre to me.

For me, my dog is like a security blanket. As I do most of my activities on my own, I feel so much better when my dog is with me.

She is exceptionally well behaved, probably because she is used to lots of different environments with me, but I always always check before I go anywhere that they are dog friendly and I have never taken her shopping other than two a local pet shop that encourages it!

If we have been on a dirty walk, I would never take her in anywhere, so she is always clean and fresh smelling. She would never approach another dog or human first she simply sits with me watching the world go by.

So for me YABU

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 01/01/2025 10:06

Perhaps I should start my own thread on this - but I think it's rather sad that you no longer seem to see pub cats. They used to be be fairly commonplace (great examples in Malvern and Oxford that I used to frequent), but I haven't seen a resident pub cat for years.

Sunhatweather · 01/01/2025 10:06

Depends on the pub - dogs in a country pub wouldn’t bother me as people might be stopping off on a walk. But - any type of proper restaurant set-up does bother me. We went to Megan's a couple of weeks ago in town, which is a beautifully decorated restaurant, and I was shocked to see a whole range of different dogs with their owners. One was a massive dog that barked loudly every time people passed by. I have two dogs and just don’t get why people would take them in there.
I think it is inconsiderate to people eating and unhygienic to have them in an indoor cafe/restaurant, no matter how cute they are.

Moveoverdarlin · 01/01/2025 10:07

I don’t mind dogs in pubs at all.

justasking111 · 01/01/2025 10:07

We're in sightseeing bit of Wales. Beaches, hills, lots of dog walkers so most pubs welcome them. I've only had one snap at me the rest just dozed.

BreatheAndFocus · 01/01/2025 10:07

YABU. Dogs have been in pubs for as long as I can remember.

Strikeoutnow · 01/01/2025 10:07

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats yes, miss the pub cats.

I love dogs, but I’m not a fan of dogs in shops and restaurants etc personally. I feel sorry for the guide dogs trying to do their jobs that are often approached by other dogs yapping. Obviously they don’t react because they are trained not too, but I don’t think personally they should be put in that position as they are a service animal. And I also feel sorry for people who don’t like dogs having to be subjected to them everywhere they go. Dogs are like kids, they are the most important thing to you as the parents/owner, but not to anyone else.

Dragging a dog around shops I think is pointless, i’m not convinced the dogs are enjoying it and it really bothers me when I’m shopping and all of a sudden my toddler is faced with a strange dogs head right in line with his face or a dog starts sniffing my crotch. Pubs if they are chilling under a table where people are having a couple of drinks I don’t mind so much, but I really can’t stand dogs being allowed in restaurants when im trying to eat my dinner. There are always exceptions to the rule, but most dogs I have encountered when im eating are noisy, badly behaved and will keep coming up to peoples tables sniffing.

I think alot of shops and restaurants have got quite lapse with allowing dogs in and I would bet money on the fact that most of them don’t have the adequate insurance they need to cover any accidents on the premises if a dog bites someone. I know our local bank has a sign on the window to say no dogs allowed but the staff let dogs in as customers kick off. It would interesting if someone was injured because of it to see what would happen.

I do also think that people have a warped sense of entitlement nowadays. They think they should be allowed to do anything they want and that everywhere should accommodate them. I’ve heard people in restaurants say ‘if you are allowing children in, why can’t my dog come in’. It’s ridiculous and not comparable. One of our local CO-OPs has a cat that wanders around the store, people think it’s fantastic but I think it’s digusting. Then the staff are being told ‘well if you’re letting the cat in, why do I have to tie my dog up outside’. It’s not a veterinary centre, it’s a shop, that’s why. The cat shouldn’t be in there either.

I personally choose not to eat at places that allow dogs in unless they have seperate dog friendly dining areas so I can keep away from them.

I went to a country pub the other week and a bloke came in on a horse and locals hardly battered an eyelid!

oh my god that’s amazing! 🤩

Im not a fan of dogs in pubs but they have always been allowed in country pubs. I always think that dogs must find busy, noisy city centre pubs very distressing places.

Liesmorelies · 01/01/2025 10:09

Can't believe people saying dogs will have been out last night due to fireworks! Wtf - that's a reason to keep them in and stay in with them if need be, not take them where you have no control whatsoever and their fear may manifest as aggression. That's madness, surely.

Tbf, I think this is more what I am talking about.
The pub we were in was a city pub and more of a gastro, foodie pub than a country style one so the growling dogs just seemed incongruous.

At one point I got caught up in a long dog lead while trying to get to the bar.

Well behaved dogs should be allowed in shops and pubs etc.. Like people it’s the odd few grumpy dogs that tarnish and spoil it for everyone… Our dog has seizures, so can’t be left, but has always been in cafes/ pubs since he was a puppy. He’ll just sit by the table and ‘smile’ at strangers- always gets 100% positive attention from strangers. Would much prefer a well behaved pooch to share a meal with rather than a feral toddler 😂

ClairDeLaLune · 01/01/2025 10:12

I agree OP, YANBU. I hate this trend of people taking their dogs everywhere. Just why? Leave the stinky, slobbery, needy, yappy, annoying creatures at home.

Not this old chestnut again…
I actively prefer pubs with dogs, and have never found them a nuisance. 🐶

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 01/01/2025 10:13

I agree OP. I've been in pubs where there are puddles of dog wee on the floor and I've seen dogs licking the table (which has not been cleaned before the next person sits down for a drink/meal 🤮).

But with many pubs struggling for business, landlords will be welcoming every customer with open arms.

Our local pub has separate areas for kids and dogs. Unfortunately if you don't want to spend your free time with kids or dogs then you're stuck. But I can't see many local pubs staying dog free.

I've also seen dogs in clothes shops and at the hairdressers. Staff in both places told me they hated it but that the only way they can keep their businesses going is to welcome dogs.

To be honest as much as I don't like dogs in pubs I can understand why people do it, (they've been out for a walk and nip into the pub) but I don't understand why people take their dogs shopping or to the hairdressers.

Vannymcvan · 01/01/2025 10:14

YABU
Dog should be allowed in pubs. Children should not.

twinklystar23 · 01/01/2025 10:14

Its the entitlement of sone dog owners was sitting at the outside table enjoying a hot drink with DH whobis allergic. Woman pounted to the hook on the wall and asked if she coyld tie her dog there. As a result the dog would be right under the little 2 person tavle. Said no due to DH allergic, she seemed quite put out! Well behaved dogs that sit quietly i dont have a problem with, and a "paws on floors "policy however if sonewhere serves food im really not keen on dogs being there due to hygiene reasons. Vicuous barking and snarling dogs not ok. As well as oblivious owners standing in shops chatting to other dog owners with their lead causing a trip hazard. Which is interrdting if someone tripped and hurt thenselves in an establishment that allowed this i wonder who would be responsible?

Unicorntearsofgin · 01/01/2025 10:14

YANBU.

Country pub with lots of space then by all means welcome them.

Busy town or city pub just why? They just get in the way and it’s a pain for people with allergies.

Surely a good compromise is let them in beer gardens etc.

Growlybear83 · 01/01/2025 10:14

I'm not a dog lover at all, but they have always been allowed in pubs and don't cause any harm.
