To think dogs shouldn't be in pubs?

Orangesinthebag · 01/01/2025 09:47

Yesterday I went to the pub for an afternoon NY Eve drink and couldn't believe the number of people who brought their dog (sometimes two dogs!) with them.

Why is this such a thing now? Can't dogs be left alone any more?
A couple of the dogs were growling at each other and owners were having to drag them apart.
It happens all the time these days - pubs, cafes, restaurants, shops but only a few years ago it would have been so weird and only guide dogs were allowed into places, especially places serving food.

I love dogs but I know several people who are scared of them & find it difficult to have to encounter them everywhere these days.

Is it unreasonable to think dogs should be kept at home?

(Sorry could add a poll for some reason)

Dogs have always been allowed in pubs. I think the difference is that more people have dogs now, and more people think think that because they can take their dog everywhere, means they should. I can take my dog to every pub, restaurant, and cafe near us but I do not.
A lot of dogs do not like that environment either and find it stressful.

What does get a bit irritating is pub dogs begging while you're eating, and dribbling over you. I've stopped going to several pubs because of this.

Dog lovers do their research to find places that allow dogs. Dog haters do their research to find places that don't allow dogs.

It really is that simple.

It’s not simple at all. 90% of places allow dogs these days and the messaging of whether they do or not for most businesses is not obvious.

YellowPixie · 01/01/2025 10:41

YANBU but I shall prepare my bingo card for the dog obsessed people:

  1. But but but people take CHILDREN to the pub and they are far worse
  2. My dog is a member of the family
  3. You wouldn't leave granny/your child at home
  4. My bestest boy is so well-behaved
  5. It's your problem if you dislike dogs, deal with it.
PiggyPigalle · 01/01/2025 10:41

Dogs have always been in pubs. Man saying he was just taking the dog around the block was code for stopping off for a pint. That would have been at the bar, eating area separate.

Pubs were ruined when they knocked all the various rooms into one open space.
People seem to have moved their sitting rooms into the pub without adjusting their behaviour.
Now it's full of child paraphernalia and family dogs. Had they kept some rooms separate there could be one dog friendly room only.

As a dog lover but a sensible one, I don't want a load of dogs where I'm eating, but neither do I want babies being changed at the table or toddlers plonked on potties next to it.

…and when everywhere in an area allows dogs?

I feel sorry for people with allergies and phobias in my local area. There’s literally nowhere they can go now other than the supermarket.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/01/2025 10:42

Yabu. Very.

FrenchandSaunders · 01/01/2025 10:43

I agree OP, bloody everywhere.

FrenchandSaunders · 01/01/2025 10:44

I grew up with dogs and they were loved and cared for but they weren’t treated like another child.

FloralGums · 01/01/2025 10:44

YANBU
We were sitting having a drink in a pub this summer. Dog comes in, not on a lead, runs up to my daughter barking and jumps up at her leg (she was wearing shorts) and scratches her.
I asked owner to get her dog away from us, dog owner replies with a smirk, “Oh, don’t you like dogs?” as if I was the one in the wrong.
It’s unhygienic and anti social.
Plus dogs are very bad for the environment so no one should be getting one as a pet - we are in a climate emergency.

Onlyvisiting · 01/01/2025 10:45

YABU, if a venue chooses to allow dogs then they are allowed to be there, that is a choice the business is making.
I'd suggest checking next time and choosing somewhere that doesn't allow them, quite a lot of places I believe will allow them in the bar but not the dining area etc, some only outside in the garden.

Judellie · 01/01/2025 10:46

It depends where the pub is. Ideally I'd say no way, but if it's a country pub that depends on walkers, they have to survive. Hopefully they have an outside area or a dining bit (rather than the bar) where dogs cannot go.
City centre pubs, restaurants etc should definitely enforce no dogs.
Tbh it wouldn't be so bad if there were dog free places as well but no, everywhere has to be 'dog friendly'.

You need to question your choice of venue if this is something you're encountering! Gross

Personally, I'd prefer a well-behaved dog over a badly behaved child.

Ha - yes me too!

I took my lovely, well behaved lab to the pub yesterday as we were doing a long walk with him. Pub was very dog friendly- they even had a dog menu with dog beer! You’d have hated it OP!

Anyway YABU. I would expect to see dogs in pubs. Maybe find one that doesn’t allow dogs. There tends to be less out in the evening than the day too.

Pamosonic · 01/01/2025 10:48

People treat pets like children these days. It's all very odd.

ForMintUser · 01/01/2025 10:49

I think it’s a post covid problem, every idiot got a dog during covid and wants to parade them around regardless of whether or not it’s a suitable environment. I live in a city and a local dog friendly pub repeatedly requests people stop bringing them when sports are being shown because it’s too busy. People continue to bring them anyway. Dickheads with dogs I call them.

Delatron · 01/01/2025 10:50

What I will say is that there are far more badly trained dogs these days with owners that don’t have a clue. I can see how if a dog was disturbing people in the pub that would be annoying.

rommymummy · 01/01/2025 10:50

Dogs have always been in pubs, it's not a new thing at all.

Whatisgoingonheredear · 01/01/2025 10:51

I do wonder where a lot of posters live because there is not one single cafe, pub, or restaurant where I live that does not allow dogs.

And for what it's worth, yes I do have a dog. He will quite happily settle under the table. The issue is when people let their dogs strain on their lead from their table to try and get to him and are surprised when he doesn't like that, or their dogs sit barking at everyone, etc. Because of those dogs causing stress to him when he's just chilling out, we no longer take him with us.

Dulra · 01/01/2025 10:51

Pamosonic · 01/01/2025 10:48

And compare them to children as if it's a choice, dog or child.

5128gap · 01/01/2025 10:51

Dogs have always been allowed in some pubs. It's entirely up to the landlord. There's a lot of trade in post dog walk drinks in some areas so they'd suffer if they banned them. There are pubs that don't allow dogs though, so you need to go to those.

Rocksaltrita · 01/01/2025 10:51

Disgusting and unhygienic. Where does it stop? Bring your pet cat along for dinner? Rat? Budgie? I don’t want a slobbery dog anywhere near me in a setting serving food and drink 🤮 And that’s without the allergies even getting a look in. Pets are not on the same level in the hierarchy as humans.

Do 90% of places allow dogs?

This is not my experience, as someone with a dog.

I actually think places are getting less dog friendly (particularly restaurants / cafes), as if known as being dog friendly it attracts more people with dogs - which is different to allowing the odd jack Russell that doesn’t look like it will cause any fuss.

Pamosonic · 01/01/2025 10:53

Dulra · 01/01/2025 10:51

They also love to point out how their dog is better behaved than a child, etc.
