To be disturbed by 11yo girl with piercings and pink hair in IKEA

How can anyone be so unhappy with the way their daughter looks that they would wish to change everything about her?! She must be homeschooled as well (which I also disagree with) as I can't imagine a school permitting it.

She had 2 cheek, nose, lip and eyebrow piercings.

She can't have been older than 10, and no, she was not a young-looking adult. She was 10 or 11 and 100% pre-puberty. The smoothness and porosity of a child's skin was unmistakable: she was under 11. I work with children and know how they look.

This is so desperately sad, it's just another parent-influenced performance of adult femininity on a young child, to me. This is why females will never be free. Why would you want your daughter to look so adult?

I try really hard not to judge mothers as parents, but I am tested daily.

Schools aren't all hell bent on policing children's appearance, especially in the holidays. I have zero views on pink hair, which is just fun. That many piercings on a young child is unusual for sure but not really very different from pierced ears when you think about it. Certainly not "desperately sad" on its own. I assume the child wanted them, rather than bring pressured by the adults in their life, which would indeed ve horrible, but rather an odd take with zero evidence.

Can you link me to where one would find a clip on cheek and lip piercing?

Google it, they're on amazon and plenty of other sites.

'She must be homeschooled, which I also disagree with' made me laugh. No shit you're disapproving of anything alternative.

littleluncheon · 31/12/2024 15:36

And as others have said, cheek lip and eyebrow 'piercings' are probably magnets.

Fishlegs · 31/12/2024 15:36

You sound awesome OP!

Which IKEA? Wondering if I know the child in question.

An abused child is everyone's business, this attitude is what causes cases like baby P.

Hair dye and facial piercings is not child abuse.

BUT I get what you're saying. I know a couple (both women) who are very 'free spirit, feminist, ex punk/raver' types and they have a daughter. One of them posted a pic of her on Facebook when I know she was still only 17 with their matching tattoos gushing about how she had 'arrived' with her half shaved head, pink hair and tattoo. What she meant was 'conformed' and I thought it was so sad and ironic that they didn't see how they were moulding their daughter into the perfect conformist non conformist. It's playing out your own 'anti establishment' politics through your children.

MontyNojangles · 31/12/2024 15:36

Maybe you should have said something judgmental to the mother at the time and found out 🙄

Stop being lazy and look it up. Its not other peoples job to educate you, you came on and made a claim they are real piercings and the girl was only 11, so why dont you prove that first?

Not my neck of the woods.

AelinAG · 31/12/2024 15:39

Must be boring to be so judgey!

Theres shed loads of magnetic or stick on piercings, or temporary tattoos, that would look real to the casual observer - if they’d existed when I was that age I dread to think how people like you would have judged my mum and nan.

It’s not abuse, and I hope you haven’t snapped your pearls clutching them so hard!

You've made a lot of assumptions based on a passing glance at someone

'everyone who disagrees with me is a troll' okay.

I went to a school where any hair colour was allowed. Some people chose to dye their hair. It was fine. We managed to get our GCSEs.

raindripp · 31/12/2024 15:41

Not the skin porosity 😂

I was still getting child tickets on public transport when I was 25 - one bus driver took a lot of convincing to give me an adult ticket. I've been mistaken for being a work experience student as well when I was mid 20s - I can fully believe someone looking young!

However a bit of pink colour on a child's hair and some stick on piercings to play about with don't really sound like an issue!

I am really amazed by how many adult friends you guys have that look 10 or 11. Fascinating as I know not one such person.

my DD looks very very young - at the age of 16 or 17 she looked 11/12.
