To be disturbed by 11yo girl with piercings and pink hair in IKEA

How can anyone be so unhappy with the way their daughter looks that they would wish to change everything about her?! She must be homeschooled as well (which I also disagree with) as I can't imagine a school permitting it.

She had 2 cheek, nose, lip and eyebrow piercings.

She can't have been older than 10, and no, she was not a young-looking adult. She was 10 or 11 and 100% pre-puberty. The smoothness and porosity of a child's skin was unmistakable: she was under 11. I work with children and know how they look.

This is so desperately sad, it's just another parent-influenced performance of adult femininity on a young child, to me. This is why females will never be free. Why would you want your daughter to look so adult?

I try really hard not to judge mothers as parents, but I am tested daily.

Cheek piercing wouldn't be a magnet surely? You could have a loose magnet inside your mouth safely.
I agree with you OP. Even if fake it's emulating an adult style. I wouldn't like to see a 10 year old with a face full of make up in IKEA either (if clearly just for a party I'd feel different).

An abused child is everyone's business, this attitude is what causes cases like baby P.

Wind 'em up and watch 'em go.

I am really amazed by how many adult friends you guys have that look 10 or 11. Fascinating as I know not one such person.

I went to school with a girl who due to some medical conditions looked about 9 when we left sixth form at 18 years of age.

shewillbefinestopworrying · 31/12/2024 15:44

I would have easily got away with being 11 at 17. Yabu.

CremeEggThief · 31/12/2024 15:45

Nothing to do with you OP, so stop being so judgy and mind your own business! Maybe make that your new year's resolution eh? HTH! 🙄😆

Baileysatchristmas · 31/12/2024 15:45

Also. Only judging the mother? What about the father or doesn't he count?

I had a mate at uni that looked about 10 thanks to a genetic condition. It was a nightmare for him on nights out, constantly have to convince the bouncers that his ID was real.

Also, wind your neck in. Equating dyed hair and piercings in someone whose age you have no idea of to genuine, barbaric child abuse such as Baby P is just sick.

WaitingforStrike · 31/12/2024 15:46

Mumsnetters are generally against young children getting piercings so I'm wondering what it is about being 11 that makes this acceptable? Clearly she can give consent at 11 but getting ears pierced would be enough!

So she could have gotten done for assault and lose custody? lmao, result

What a stupid thing to say 😂

Fedupwithteenagers24 · 31/12/2024 15:48

Totally agree with you OP. Why do parents do this. I am amazed at how many three year old boys at nursery have articulated their love of love hair. They can't articulate much at all at nursery. It's totally the parents. And piercings aren't as easy to change as hair.

Rustyfeet · 31/12/2024 15:48

@lover99

Here you go
Faux Clip-On Nose Ring 24g - 925 Sterling Silver - No Piercing Needed - Fake Nose Hoop https://amzn.eu/d/ffgc7OA

Also, if you think this is child abuse then I hope you don't have kids who live very sheltered lives. She's also not a baby.

Also if you think it's everyone's business you should have done something there and then. Posting on MN won't do anything for the child if you thought they where abused.

I would assume it's a bit of a rebellion and wanting to play with style with temp things. Some kids play with make up and nail varnish. Shock horror! Or even put glitter paint in there hair! The horror. Don't get me started on temporary tattoos...🙄

My son is almost 25 and still gets asked for ID when buying energy drinks!

Can 3 year old girls articulate how they want their hair?
How did you decide what to do with your 3 year old's hair if they couldn't express a wish?

CatamaranViper · 31/12/2024 15:53

I used to use eyelash glue to glue gems to my face to look like piercings. That's way before we had access to Amazon/temu/shien where these things can very easily be bought

Are you amazed if the 3 year old girls articulate the same?

Baileysatchristmas · 31/12/2024 15:42

my DD looks very very young - at the age of 16 or 17 she looked 11/12.

I looked very, very young at 16, 17, too; used to get asked who I was 'visiting' when I went to Uni. But there are still tell signs for age, especially for people who work with children.

katter · 31/12/2024 15:54

Meh
Piercings might have been fake and what's wrong with pink hair?
Not every school has rules about hair color.
And it isn't about adult femininity there are so many TV Shows and Mangas that have girls with all kinds of hair colors.

BabaYagasLittleSister · 31/12/2024 15:54

I don't understand how this affects you at all.

Crazybaby123 · 31/12/2024 16:00

If the child was definitely ten, not a very short 16 year old, you don't know if they had a medical condition to stunt growth for example. Bit if theyvwere ten then the peircings are just not OK. I don't have a problem with pink hair though. Are you sure they arent fake piercings? Maybe they were at a party or doing a show and had fake piercings?

CandyCane457 · 31/12/2024 16:00

If she really is 11 as you’re so sure she is, there’s no way those piercings are real as no piercer would do it. They are probably stick ons, and for a bit of fun she’s done a pink rinse over the holidays that will wash out after a few days. You have no idea.

Frith2013 · 31/12/2024 16:00

I'd have thought there would be more interesting things to divert your attention in IKEA, than a young child.

Can you link me to the product?

If you Google ‘fake cheek/eyebrow/lip piercing’
you'll get hundreds of hits. They’re readily available and extremely inexpensive.

LeavesOnTrees · 31/12/2024 16:01

YABU to go to IKEA on NYE. It must have been packed. Did you get anything nice ?
Billy bookcase or a POANG chair maybe.

If you got anything with handles, you have to make sure to pick them up in the separate section in the warehouse bit. Nightmare.

You can get stick on fake piercings as well.
And you don’t need magnets for nose, lip etc. It can a cuff or sometimes they work with a little spring.
