To wish that 'hubby' was banned on MN?

I see more and more posters are referring to their husbands as "hubby". I can't stand the abbreviation and wish it would disappear.🫥

Ah I love an irrational word banning thread 😂
Can I please add anyone who uses the phrase '___ here' to indicate that they have some kind of specialist knowledge about your post. It's usually someone who is only vaguely linked to the topic area or the reply misses the point of your post entirely.

E.g., Hi everyone, I'd love to buy my mum a box of chocolates for her birthday, what's everyone's favourite luxury box?

Reply: 'Nutritionist here, you shouldn't buy anyone a gift with that much sugar'

Love this 😂😂

I think if we banned hubby because of some people’s personal preference, it would open a can of worms to cancelling most phrases as there’s always going to be some people who don’t like them!

Ill probably be in the minority here as I know it’s a huge mumsnet norm, but I’m not into all the DH, DD, DSS, DPIL, DS, DGP, DGD… it goes on! I once spent so much time trying to work out that DPIL meant “darling parents in law” that I wish the poster had just written “my in laws”… trying to guage context and work out of DS is darling son or darling sister…is it really that much harder to write “my granddaughter” than DGD… I am getting used to it now but I wish they’d never been invented.

And don’t get me started on stories with “person A did this, person B thinks this, then person C said this”… I can never follow who’s who on those!

Well said 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Do you all wish all the non mums would go away as well? Many might have received some great advice from male posters and never know it. I’d be interested to know from mumsnet HQ if all the staff are female as well!

Ha, here we go . . .

Where you going?

Oh I effing HATE this. 'DH is still out at 1am, handhold please.' 'DD isn't speaking to me after I badmouthed her tattoo, handhold please.' 'Off to the Highlands for New Year's Eve, and snow is predicted, handhold please..' Hmm

Fuck off ... Please. Grin

I also hate posts that start with 'kindly OP,' and 'gently OP,' moreso because they are often followed by a fairly rude post that is attacking the poster!

Exactly this, no grown adult should be asking for a metaphorical handhold to get through trivial events.

DTD over on the pregnancy/conception boards is the absolute worst. Also “boob the baby” and “baby needs boobing”

Yea. Why can't they just say, "I fed the baby".

Mercedes45 · 31/12/2024 19:44

"My husband has a hobby, but don't want to say as it is outing"
Meaning
"My husband puts on lycra and irritates drivers on the roads"

On the other hand, I do like a good 'huzzah!' and that word should be used far more! 😁

I don't, its 😝

Barney16 · 01/01/2025 01:17

I was in a relationship with a bloke who kept saying oh I can't wait to be your hubby, when I'm your hubby it will be great. Couldn't stand it. He became the ex nearly hubby.

I went to see Thomas B Wild a couple of months ago, and his set was roughly 3% huzzah-ing. Very therapeutic.

For the hubby haters, I knew somebody who used to refer to their husbot. A new low, I feel.

A word I don’t like is niblings. I’ve seen it once or twice on here, and more on other social media.

I suspect I just need to ditch social media

The acronyms on here drive me absolutely crazy but the one that drives me most crazy is DDOG.

Hepzibar · 01/01/2025 08:16

This is making my teeth itch (WTF)

Lemonyfuckit · 01/01/2025 08:20

I hate pretty much all the words that have been mentioned.

Good point why are we adding the 'D' all the time - I get the abbreviations but usually the posts are that someone's husband is actually at best being a bit of a dick and at worst is actually abusive. Maybe we could just say 'H', 'D', 'S' etc (I realise that's not going to happen...).

I'm in. Maybe we should start a thread 'Ditch the D' 😂

I’m sure you write things that annoy other people.

I think many people use the ‘hubby’ thing to bully posters, especially new posters.

What the fuck is wrong with 'hubby' anyway?

Seems an arbitrary mumsnet thing...other people still use it freely without fear.

Exactly. It’s horrible seeing new posters hounded off MN (and their threads) for using hubby.

Wonderwall23 · 01/01/2025 11:23

I absolutely hate the term 'hubby' but I only know one person who actually uses it in real life. I can't articulate why though, or why it's so much worse for me than hollibobs (for example).

It seems others feel the same...which I find vaguely fascinating.

It is each to their own though. I've got no right to say others can't say it and would never be so rude as to directly call someone out on it on a thread.

Good. Like everyone else I have my dislikes when it comes to commonly used expressions but I wouldn't be so basic as to belittle someone over the use of them, as happens on this site.
People who do it ought to grow up.

MargotMoon · 01/01/2025 15:12

YANBU it's one of my pet hates.

Along with writing 'sorry' after a post, in response to someone asking an opinion about something. I find it really annoying and passive-aggressive. Sorry.

Oh, and a recent one - social media posts referring to a cafe/restaurant as a 'spot': "check out the plant based burritos at this amazing new vegan spot".

Well I can't tolerate seeing "Picky bits", and "Pack up" on here. Can those words be banned as well?

”Picky bits” makes me want to gouge my eyes out. I’m not even completely sure why but I detest it, it’s vile.
