To want to take down Christmas decorations on 31stDec

We’ve had tree and Christmas decorations up since early December. I’m so ready to take them down now and get the house back to normal, but DH says it’s way too early and how could I think that was usual. Out of interest, do you keep your tree etc until 6 January?

And yes to January being gloomy enough already. My tree will be down by 12th night but I keep the mantel and TV table lights till Candlemas.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 31/12/2024 11:23

Mine are coming down today I usually have them up for two weeks, this year 15th to 31st. I can’t wait to get back to normal. Nice fresh start to the New Year

tuvamoodyson · 31/12/2024 11:26

The very few decorations I have up, they’ll be down tomorrow!

gingercat02 · 31/12/2024 11:33

Usually up mid-December and down on the 12th night, but I will probably take them down on the 5th this year as we are back to work on the 6th, so Sunday makes sense

Effiex08 · 31/12/2024 11:34

I am dying to take mine down but hubby also wants to leave it up a bit longer. I don't want to be a kill joy so will put up with it for another day or two if he insists.

lemonyellows · 31/12/2024 11:34

I always take mine down on New Year's Day. There is no right or wrong here though.

BogRollBOGOF · 31/12/2024 12:00

I keep mine up until the 12th night.
January is long and bleak enough without removing a bit of colour, light and cosiness prematurely. There's still another 3 weeks before the darkest days really eek out until 5pm and become more usable. Winter tends to bite harder in Jan/ Feb too, so I'm in team Yule on lighting up the shortest days.

Rainbowdottie · 31/12/2024 12:01

I'd like mine down. My dh is adamant that they stay until tomorrow, new years day. Whilst I never take any notice of what he says, I can't take it down or put it away without him, so tomorrow it is. Ideally I would have liked it down probably the last weekend. My MIL always had her ups until the 12th night believing it was unlucky. It does cross my mind to leave it, is it unlucky....but really I find it all a bit over stimulating by now....and I don't even put loads up.

Ihopeithinkiknow · 31/12/2024 12:02

Always take mine down on the 27th but only because it's my daughters birthday on the 30th and I want her to have birthdays and not Christmas/birthdays all rolled into one

kitchenhelprequired · 31/12/2024 12:05

Growing up most people put trees up weekend before Christmas/Christmas Eve and left up for the 12 days. Lights in towns wouldn't have gone on before 1st Dec but now it's 2nd week of November for many. It's all been brought forward so I'm all for taking down asap after Christmas.

Floralnomad · 31/12/2024 12:14

We had ours up from mid November this year in an effort to cheer up our house after the loss of my lovely dog ( husband did it as a surprise whilst I was away for a couple of days) , usually they go up the last day Nov/ 1st Dec . We always take them down on the 30th/31st Dec ( it’s a 2 day job 3 trees + decorations) so that it’s all clean and tidy for when he goes back to work on the 2nd . It’s definitely not a case of being fed up with them as they don’t get in the way and I love my trees .

Peggimmytchell · 31/12/2024 12:14

I'll probably take mine down friday as it's more convenient for me. I'm busy over the weekend and then back to work.

People i know taking them down 26/27th are the types who put it up during November.

I love the 12 days of Christmas and I hate that Christmas starts so early that people are tired of it by Epiphany. Mine go up on around 16 Dec and down on Jan 5 or 6, can never remember which and have to check every year. This was perfectly normal when I was little but increasingly I feel like an adherent of some strange cult.

There really seems to have been a change in the last maybe 10 years to have the decorations up so early. When I was young( now early 60s) most people put the tree up round about a week before Christmas, lots would do it a couple of days before.
When my children were at school we put the tree up a couple of days before the end of term. No one put their decorations up on the first of December and if you happened to see a tree up then it was very unusual, whereas now it's not uncommon in November.
No wonder people are sick of them.
It does seem very joyless though to take them down on boxing day. I would never take them down before new year, I too take them down on the 5th or 6th, but I only put mine up on the 20th December so I'm not at all fed up with them. People do seem to have forgotten about the 12 days of Christmas.

AwakeNotThruChoice · 31/12/2024 12:34

Mine come down on 27/29/30th. Always before the 1st.

I like a fresh start and a house that always feels nice and empty once the tree etc are down !

BadgerInDungarees · 31/12/2024 12:37

I took ours down Sunday. They'd been up for about 2 weeks maybe. Both dh and I had to work yesterday, dh is working today then both back properly on Thursday so it just made sense to take them down then.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 31/12/2024 12:38

Only my tree is still up and I've started to remove the baubles. It actually looks better with less, note for next year! I quite like having a bare tree with just lights for NY then the whole tree will come down.

pizzaHeart · 31/12/2024 12:38

Ours are always coming down between 3d and 8th of January depending on when I have free time and opportunity to get them down . I never take them down on New Year Eve or New year day, I like still to feel festive on these days.

Shardlake63 · 31/12/2024 12:42

Mine will come down this weekend.
I always like to leave them up till after the New Year celebrations, but then I didn't put them up until about two weeks before Christmas.
Some households near me put theirs up in November, so I can see why they'd be sick of the sight of them before January.

MereDintofPandiculation · 31/12/2024 12:46

When I was young we used to have a family member with a birthday on 6th, so obviously we left them up for the birthday, besides, it would have been unthinkable not to have them up while the school holidays were still on.

I take down the wreath and anything in the entrance hall on 7th , then leave the tree as long as I'm still enjoying it (but I draw the curtains on it, don't display it to the outside).

Christmas, and then snow in January or February, is what gets me through the long greyness of winter.

ILikeDungs · 31/12/2024 12:47

Tree went up Dec. 23rd, coming down Jan. 1st.

We have a very small cottage, need the space back

BlackChunkyBoots · 31/12/2024 12:57

I've only got a little tree up but it's coming down tomorrow. I think Christmas is done by NYD. Only the Pringles remain!

Clafoutie · 31/12/2024 13:00

CheeseTime · 31/12/2024 08:44

Christmas anything seems wrong after 25th. I held out until yesterday and enjoyed my day of cleaning and putting the house back to order. That’s my new year feeling. 🌟

I guess it all depends whether you see Christmas Day as the last day of Christmas or the first day! I am in the first day camp.

K0OLA1D · 31/12/2024 13:00

Just sat down with a baileys laced coffee after pulling them all down. The fairy lights are stopping on the bookshelf as a permanent fixture though

Pinetreethree · 31/12/2024 13:08

Mine were down by the 27th. I did want to take the tree down, but kids are still very young and wanted it kept up. I'll take it down tomorrow or the 2nd.
