Should she replace it?

Langarg · 30/12/2024 16:57

My friend asked if she could borrow my Dyson airwrap for her wedding as money was tight and she couldn’t afford a hairdresser. It was a small wedding with only her, her DH and two witnesses. I reluctantly agreed (bit of a people pleaser).

The wedding was two weeks ago, we exchanged a few messages back and forth the day after her wedding. A few days later I asked if she could please return my airwrap and she didn’t reply. I messaged again saying I really need it back as I don’t have a hair dryer anymore and solely use this to dry/style my hair and she eventually replied saying she accidentally left it in the hotel however the hotel are claiming it wasn’t left there.

She was very apologetic however didn’t offer to replace it or give me the money for it. I raised this with her and explained that I shouldn’t be left without my airwrap or out of pocket for her mistake and she said that she couldn’t afford to replace or give me the money for it. She then sent me a link to a post on Facebook marketplace of someone selling an older model for £150 and said that if I buy that she can pay me back in 3 monthly instalments.

I don’t want to accept this because firstly why should I be out of pocket £150 and risk not being paid back and I don’t want an older model when I had the newer one which cost me nearly £500 less than a year ago.

I explained this to her and she said she is going to be forced to put a brand new one on her credit card which will put her in to debt. I feel awful but I really don’t know what to do?!

Please give me some advice…

YABU = buy the £150 older model and hope she pays the 3 monthly instalments
YANBU = accept her offer of her buying a replacement on her credit card

OMG OP what an absolute piss take. Good on you for calling her out.

When I asked her how she managed to forget it she told me that when they were packing up to leave she left all her bits by the door and that her DH forgot to lift it. She said he likely missed it because the carpets were a deep blue, the same colour as the box.

I’ve been such a mug haven’t I! I can’t believe I believed it had genuinely been left in the hotel!

Aw no you haven't been a mug. You're a genuinely nice person who believes the best in people. She's the awful one in trying to mug you off!

She likely has no conscience so will continue using it until the 2nd, when it'll miraculously turn up after all. Horrible woman. I hope she is reading this and can see what an awful person she is. Shame on her.

Should I offer to go to the hotel with them? 🤣

I wish you had!! If the hairdryer turns up ask for the name of the manager at the hotel so you can phone and thank them personally. When you get the hair dryer back, I would ditch this thief, she's no friend.

rookiemere · 30/12/2024 17:00

Ooh tricky one. Can you ask her if she can claim on her home insurance for the loss?
I think a compromise would be that she pays for the £150 air wrap up front.

Why should the OP compromise?

SpringIscomingalso · 30/12/2024 21:48

It is still with her

BitterTits · 30/12/2024 21:49

Can you Google the hotel to see if there really are deep blue carpets? Just to satisfy my nosiness really, I'm sure your 'friend' is lying.

Sausagedog101 · 30/12/2024 21:50

Calamitousness · 30/12/2024 16:59

She is massively unreasonable. It was in her care. She lost it. She pays for a new one. No question.

This! I'm outraged she would consider not doing this!

Money isn’t of little object, I used my bonus to treat myself.

Anyway, I have an update! I decided not to give her the heads up that I was calling the hotel. I called the hotel and they knew nothing of it. Instead of messaging my ‘friend’ I decided to put her on the spot and phone her, rather than giving her a chance to think of a reply by text message.

I asked her if she definitely stayed at (insert name of hotel), as I’d contacted them and they had heard nothing of the airwrap having been left. She started going on about GDPR and that they probably couldn’t speak about other guests hotel stay. I told her that I’m disappointed it’s dragged out for as long as it has and that I’d like her to order a new airwrap tonight. She said that her and DH are going to drive to the hotel on the 2nd to speak to the manager in person… I have a funny feeling she’s speaking BS and that the airwrap will magically appear following her fake return trip to the hotel! After all, it’s a 4 hour round trip for her to make. Watch this space!

I absolutely LOVE the fact that you phoned the CF! So bold and decisive! 💪 Many people would just whinge and not do much to resolve the situation, but you've really grasped the nettle - well done you! 🤗I can't wait to hear the outcome of this and I'm keeping everything crossed that you get your original AirWrap back or a brand-new one by the end of the week.

thinblurredblueline · 30/12/2024 21:51

She is wanting to keep yours the scammer!! No way she left yours there IMO and trying to palm you off with a cheap alternative on a free payment plan.

Who here has left a large ish item in a hotel? I may have lost some knickers, a sock, or worse case a charger? Not Something like a bulky hair tool which wouldn't have got tidied away and forgotten surely?

Does she mean by the door inside their hotel room? When they checked out?

If so, the only people who had access to it were hotel staff. If they found it in the room, they’re surely required to hand it in to reception/management with the room number, so they can contact the guest to let them know it’s been found in the room. Or at very least book it into lost property. It’s a very expensive item.

If they didn’t hand it in and took it home, that’s theft, as it wasn’t their property to take. Presumably, theft of items from the hotel is a disciplinary offence in their employment contract and also a crime, necessitating a report to the police.

AgreeableDragon · 30/12/2024 21:53

If the air wrap doesn't miraculously reappear the next step is small claims court. Its easy to do and getting a summons from the court should be shocking enough to make this CF cough up £500.

Btw id be asking for cash not a replacement. Then you control where you buy it from and get the guarantee.

Starzinsky · 30/12/2024 21:57

She lost it she should pay for it. Simple.

thinblurredblueline · 30/12/2024 21:57

CatPhonePot · 30/12/2024 21:59

I have bought my daughter an Airstrait for her upcoming birthday. Am now worried that she would prefer an Airwrap!

I am astounded she isnt getting ine to you tomorrow via amazon next day delivery. Its NYE too!! Hair!!! So cheeky

i would do this at the very least as id be mortified to have lost it

Purplequestionmark · 30/12/2024 22:05

The cheeky cow! Regardless of going to the hotel to check.. ( 😆 ) she needs to pay for a new one before then!

And ditch the bitch once it's resolved.

Tortielady · 30/12/2024 22:05

That's what I thought. If the OP's Airwrap isn't returned in the very near future and in its own box with all of its bits and attachments in the condition she last saw them, her friend should deposit the full amount for a replacement in her bank account. Who knows what she'll try to fob her off with otherwise.

CandyCane5 · 30/12/2024 22:05

If she can't afford something herself then she should be extra careful when she's borrowing something of value. Unbelievably shitty attitude of her. Of course she should replace it 🥴

WhatShudWeDoDrunkenSailor · 30/12/2024 22:05

@Langarg yes you've been a mug but that's on her taking advantage not you

Iloveacurry · 30/12/2024 22:05

This reminds me of the ‘friend’ who picked up her friend’s glasses after a weekend away and pretended they were hers!

MerrilyOnhigh · 30/12/2024 22:06

If this is someone who couldn't afford a hairdresser, I'm wondering how she can suddenly afford an unnecessary 4 hour round trip. If the dryer doesn't turn up, ask her for the crime number, because obviously she should have reported this to the police as a likely theft by a hotel employee.

And, of course, you can check out her social media pages on 1st January and contemplate her unusually well-tended hair.

theallotmentqueen · 30/12/2024 22:06

It’s the fact that she didn’t immediately tell you which irritates me, and you had to chase her. If she’d immediately contacted you I think that would be one thing. Irritating but understandable. But it’s the fact that she didn’t even tell you and just left you to chase her up.

I don’t know. I suppose it depends on how you feel about the friendship, whether you think she can actually afford it but is lying, how you think it will affect the friendship. It’s deeply frustrating that although she has lost your expensive item, somehow it’s on you to let her off the hook to preserve the friendship. I think you have a few options.

  1. let her off the hook (£150 replacement she pays for in installments). However, have a serious conversation with her not only about the fact that she lost your expensive item, but that she didn’t even tell you. That’s so incredibly disrespectful and not nice. Make it very clear that kind of behaviour isn’t ok.
  2. Demand £500 back (perfectly reasonable). However, probably expect your friendship to be over or at least seriously impaired if you take this option.
  3. ask her to pay the £500 back very slowly over time (£30 a month?) pros: she might be able to do this. Cons: you can’t rely on her paying you the full amount back.
Iloveacurry · 30/12/2024 22:07

Anyway yes, I think they will magically reappear after the non-existent trip back to the hotel!
