Should she replace it?

Langarg · 30/12/2024 16:57

My friend asked if she could borrow my Dyson airwrap for her wedding as money was tight and she couldn’t afford a hairdresser. It was a small wedding with only her, her DH and two witnesses. I reluctantly agreed (bit of a people pleaser).

The wedding was two weeks ago, we exchanged a few messages back and forth the day after her wedding. A few days later I asked if she could please return my airwrap and she didn’t reply. I messaged again saying I really need it back as I don’t have a hair dryer anymore and solely use this to dry/style my hair and she eventually replied saying she accidentally left it in the hotel however the hotel are claiming it wasn’t left there.

She was very apologetic however didn’t offer to replace it or give me the money for it. I raised this with her and explained that I shouldn’t be left without my airwrap or out of pocket for her mistake and she said that she couldn’t afford to replace or give me the money for it. She then sent me a link to a post on Facebook marketplace of someone selling an older model for £150 and said that if I buy that she can pay me back in 3 monthly instalments.

I don’t want to accept this because firstly why should I be out of pocket £150 and risk not being paid back and I don’t want an older model when I had the newer one which cost me nearly £500 less than a year ago.

I explained this to her and she said she is going to be forced to put a brand new one on her credit card which will put her in to debt. I feel awful but I really don’t know what to do?!

Please give me some advice…

YABU = buy the £150 older model and hope she pays the 3 monthly instalments
YANBU = accept her offer of her buying a replacement on her credit card

I had a friend like this, whatever was loaned she either lost or it returned damaged/broken. She wasn't a thief, just very very clumsy and absent minded. It's very disappointing.

Is she usually clumsy like this? I just can't understand how it was left in the hotel room, surely you check everything before you leave?

WoolySnail · 30/12/2024 21:24

Gawd, well according to RosesAndHellebores we should all be living in squats; terribly wasteful spending money on a house when you could squat or live in a slum for cheap 😁

Americano75 · 30/12/2024 21:24

I bloody hope she's not planning to buy a second hand one and palm that off on you!

FOJN · 30/12/2024 21:25

RosesAndHellebores · 30/12/2024 20:21

£500 wouldn't be an issue on the basis that one must have far more money than sense to spend £500 on a hairdryer.

If a person can spend £500 on a hairdryer, surely money is not an issue and there must be plenty of it. That's fine, but for the very wealthy £500 matters no more than £50. If it does for the op then she has tiddled money up the wall and shouldn't have lent the item in the first place.

Bonkers!

Your opinion on OP's spending priorities are irrelevant.

She lent a friend one of her possessions and her friend claims to have "lost" it by leaving it at a hotel, her friend owes her a replacement.

This is so true, I shall have to return mine immediately!!

Who needs to buy clothes when a bin bag covers all of our vital parts?

CakeSale · 30/12/2024 21:27

Those considering an air wrap might like to know that a group of workers from the Malaysian factories have just been granted permission to sue Dyson over allegations that they were kept in conditions of forced labour - including being beaten when they didn't meet onerous targets, and not being paid for all the work done.

Moveoverdarlin · 30/12/2024 21:29

I would bet my house on the fact that your airwrap will be miraculously back in your possession by January 3rd.

Oh what are the chances!! The hotel had it after all!

Please update us!

What a devious woman. After you have it back, I would very much limit your contact with her.

Who needs water from the tap when rain is free?

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 30/12/2024 21:31

I assume she let whoever was her witness take it and she’s got to go get it back from them. Bet she’s not sold it or anything, just said “oh keep it” and is now panicking about getting it back.

I do think you need to consider this friendship over.

She should be sorting the £150 one and returning it to you.

Why it’s an older model she should replace like for like

But she’d have to explain why they need to drive 2hrs to the hotel!

She's not really driving to the hotel..

Langarg · 30/12/2024 20:45

Should I offer to go to the hotel with them? 🤣

I would!

Projectme · 30/12/2024 21:33

What an ultimate CF!! I hope you manage to catch her out OP...
I'd be worried that she tries to fob you off with a used 2nd hand one but you would recognise your own airwrap straight away I'm sure.

How tf did she 'forget' to bring it back home from the hotel? What BS. The box it comes in, with all the attachments is huge! You just wouldn't not see that box sitting on the dressing table when double checking you'd packed everything.

Agree with PPs that she's got it and hanging on to it for NYE. Cheeky bitch!

I've got one; it's a bloody game changer!!

OlliesMam43 · 30/12/2024 21:37

Langarg · 30/12/2024 20:51

I think I know someone who is selling one 🤣

A good suggestion by @Supperlite re asking friend to order a new one tonight anyway and if the airwrap ‘turns up’ on the 2nd she can send the new one back

OR she sells your old one and pays some off her credit card with the money

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 30/12/2024 17:11

Ring the hotel yourself and ask...

i once left a iphone charger cable at a hotel and they notified me of a lost item (didn’t bother having it sent to me the cost of P&P was more than a new cable) but I really don’t think the hotel staff took it, I think the bride either broke it or has taken a shine to it.

Fannyfiggs · 30/12/2024 21:38

Can you drive to the hotel on 2nd and wait for them?

No matter the truth or the outcome, your 'friend' is a massive cheeky fucker.

.

JustMyView13 · 30/12/2024 21:38

@Langarg I want to emphasise how fully invested I am in this now. Please do report back on / after 2nd about airwrapgate.
Excited to hear the story about the hotel misunderstanding, GDPR, and the lost property hero 😂

When I asked her how she managed to forget it she told me that when they were packing up to leave she left all her bits by the door and that her DH forgot to lift it. She said he likely missed it because the carpets were a deep blue, the same colour as the box.

I’ve been such a mug haven’t I! I can’t believe I believed it had genuinely been left in the hotel!

Ginnnny · 30/12/2024 21:40

She’s absolutely taking the piss. Any reputable hotel would admit to having it so it’s probably sat in her house, cheeky bitch.
push for a new one - fuck her debt, she’s a CF.
OP - never loan this bitch anything again!

RosesAndHellebores · 30/12/2024 20:15

I'd have thought that if money were of so little object someone would spend £500 on a hairdryer, it wouldn't be an issue.

Mine was about £30. It does the job. We are extremely comfortable.

What does OP's level of wealth or what she chooses to spend her money on have to do with this issue? Or with you? How crass. You may well be "extremely comfortable", but as the old saying goes - money doesn't buy class - thanks for proving this with your post.

She’s lying through her teeth.

I did accidentally once leave my GHD’s in a hotel room and within an hour of arriving home, the hotel rang me to tell me they’d been found and would be left in lost property to be collected.
Ditto when my now ex left his jacket hanging up in the wardrobe - we had a call from the hotel within hours.
