Should she replace it?

1000 replies

Langarg · 30/12/2024 16:57

My friend asked if she could borrow my Dyson airwrap for her wedding as money was tight and she couldn’t afford a hairdresser. It was a small wedding with only her, her DH and two witnesses. I reluctantly agreed (bit of a people pleaser).

The wedding was two weeks ago, we exchanged a few messages back and forth the day after her wedding. A few days later I asked if she could please return my airwrap and she didn’t reply. I messaged again saying I really need it back as I don’t have a hair dryer anymore and solely use this to dry/style my hair and she eventually replied saying she accidentally left it in the hotel however the hotel are claiming it wasn’t left there.

She was very apologetic however didn’t offer to replace it or give me the money for it. I raised this with her and explained that I shouldn’t be left without my airwrap or out of pocket for her mistake and she said that she couldn’t afford to replace or give me the money for it. She then sent me a link to a post on Facebook marketplace of someone selling an older model for £150 and said that if I buy that she can pay me back in 3 monthly instalments.

I don’t want to accept this because firstly why should I be out of pocket £150 and risk not being paid back and I don’t want an older model when I had the newer one which cost me nearly £500 less than a year ago.

I explained this to her and she said she is going to be forced to put a brand new one on her credit card which will put her in to debt. I feel awful but I really don’t know what to do?!

Please give me some advice…

YABU = buy the £150 older model and hope she pays the 3 monthly instalments
YANBU = accept her offer of her buying a replacement on her credit card

She may see the police getting involved as a good thing. Blame the staff instead of her.

Foodylicious · 30/12/2024 21:04

Just to say she could order you a new one through amazon, they do monthly payment plans
Argos and the like probably do too!

Tangelablue · 30/12/2024 21:04

Grumpyoldthing · 30/12/2024 20:57

It’s going to turn up after she’s used it for new years 🤣

I was just thinking that. Bet her hair looks great for new year.
Op tell her to stop bullshitting and return it.

SchoolDilemma17 · 30/12/2024 21:05

Langarg · 30/12/2024 20:51

I think I know someone who is selling one 🤣

A good suggestion by @Supperlite re asking friend to order a new one tonight anyway and if the airwrap ‘turns up’ on the 2nd she can send the new one back

Sorry just saw your update. I bet she needs it for NYE and therefore on the 2nd it will magically appear! What a CF!

and I also want an airwrap now 😂

Reminds me a bit of the cream tea CF if anyone remembers that thread... just outlandish entitlement and lies in both cases!

I’ll need to find this one!

IridiumSky · 30/12/2024 21:08

Ha ha!

The ‘friend’s’ story is so obviously a bucket of bull, and the story so entertaining, that we should perhaps all bung in a few quid and buy the OP a new one ourselves. 😀

ThisAvalanche · 30/12/2024 21:08

Good Lord, she must think you an absolute idiot. She's treating you with such contempt and disrespect, and yet it goes on.

The 'friend' and her husband are NOT 'driving to the hotel on the 2nd to speak to the manager' at all. What an absolute crock.

Anyway, I think she's reading the thread anyway, so it's just getting embarrassing. Or it would be a for a normal person, rather than a lowlife who steals from their friends, then lies their dense head off about it.

How did you reply? At this stage, and after being treated like this, I'd possibly go with: 'Just STOP LYING and return my bloody hairdryer, you monumental fuckwit.'

nextlocation · 30/12/2024 21:09

Do we think her DH is in on it then?

EverythingElseIsTaken · 30/12/2024 21:02

It’s not a “hairdryer”. I have a very good hairdryer but could never blow dry my hair to the style I wanted. I saved up and treated myself to a Dyson Airwrap under the “no quibble returns” policy offered by Dyson. I now look salon styled every day 😊 and I love it. Yes it’s a LOT of money but no one has gone without anything for me to afford it and I look great. If I needed to replace it I would have to save up for the best part of a year again…..

Same here. I’m a very average earner but I bought mine 3 and a bit years ago from QVC who were offering it to be paid in 4 monthly instalments of £112, interest free and no credit checks. Don’t know if they still do that but I’d been thinking about it for 2 years before I took the plunge. I adore it and get so many compliments on my hair that I never got before!!

Nah she will of told him op gave it to her.

DowntheDrainpipe · 30/12/2024 21:10

There’s no bloody way I would wait for them to ‘go to the hotel’ on the 2nd (what rubbish anyway!). You want a replacement ordered right now and you want a screenshot of the order clearly showing it being sent to your address. Don’t give her the satisfaction of using it for NYE, the cheeky cow (or, you know, she can use your old one that she clearly has while you use the brand new one).

Foodylicious · 30/12/2024 21:11

Maybe she needs to double check her luggage...
Many many years ago when I worked in a hotel, a guest reported their camera missing (after they got home) and essentially I was pretty much accused of stealing it as I had been the one to replace her towels and shut curtains etc the previous evening.
After a week feeling like I was under suspicion (and the hotel not offering to compensate the guest) she called with a "silly me for causing such a fuss, I've just found it in my hat box".

Interested to see what your friend comes back to you with.

CoastalCalm · 30/12/2024 21:12

I’d be so tempted to either stake out her house on the 2nd or the hotel

I’m not well off but when I was made redundant I got a pretty good pay off and decided to treat myself to a few things. I got the Dyson hairdryer and straighteners in 2020 and use them every day so it’s money well spent

But she’d have to explain why they need to drive 2hrs to the hotel!

Happilyobtuse · 30/12/2024 21:14

I recently used my friends dyson air wrap during christmas break and I am in love with it! Just in the process of shortlisting which one to purchase, I think it is available for around £399.99 at argos. I was also under the impression that it is just a hair dryer but honestly the air wrap is amazing!!! I have used it before as my mum and sis both have one but when I used it previously my sis did my hair and even though it looked great, I didn’t realise how easy it was to use. My sis is a dab hand at hair styling, when she isn’t doing her day job! I am a total convert and going to buy one asap! Just waiting for pay day tmrw.

I think your so called friend has stolen it or is planning to keep it till New years eve! Really not a friend! 🙄

Tortielady · 30/12/2024 21:15

I started reading the thread not knowing what an Airwrap is (goggling took care of that) and on Team Feckless User rather than Team Tea-Leaf. However, @Langarg's update about her friend's road-trip has made me think otherwise. Should the expedition not result in the return of your Airwrap, I'd be strongly inclined to insist on a deposit of £500 into your bank so you can get yourself a new one. Otherwise, who knows what she'll unearth for you. . .she seems to think a secondhand kit for £150 with who knows what faults is a fair replacement for your almost new one. I honestly wouldn't trust her as far as I could throw her.

loopyluloopy · 30/12/2024 21:15

I'd wouldn't be surprised if she was trying to pull a fast one and keep it. She should be replacing it with a brand new one, very cheeky!

UndermyShoeJoe · 30/12/2024 21:15

nextlocation · 30/12/2024 21:12

But she’d have to explain why they need to drive 2hrs to the hotel!

They won’t be. It’s a story to get them used for new years. When she will return then to the op. Tell the new husband she leant them out to someone and pooof gone.

WorldKeepsSpinningRound · 30/12/2024 21:16

I would be massively pissed off at this. I have a dyson air wrap too. Can’t imagine having to cope without it as I don’t have another hair dryer and my hair is long.

If I were you I would enlist the help of a family member with a car thief doesn’t know. I would then sit outside her house at a discreet distance and film her car NOT going to the hotel.

When she calls me to explain how the hotel manager “found” it I record the conversation and would ask her to clarify if she went in her “black picasso” or whatever the hell she drives earlier today.

I would then faux surprise exclaim, “That’s interesting as it has not moved from your drive all day/ just went to Tescos or whatever.

I would then share my story far and wide and play the recording to anyone that doesn’t believe it.

Fuck her and her thieving ways.

Cryingatthegym · 30/12/2024 21:18

I explained this to her and she said she is going to be forced to put a brand new one on her credit card which will put her in to debt.

I bumped into my neighbour's car the other week and dented their bumper. I'm skint after Christmas and will probably have to pay for the repair on my credit card. Tough shit for me. And equally tough shit for her. That's what happens when you're careless with someone else's belongings.

On what is for a lot of people, a work day too. V bizarre.

stichguru · 30/12/2024 21:19

The natural consequences of her leaving it in the hotel are that she needs to replace it. Whether she can afford to or not is irrelevant.

latetothefisting · 30/12/2024 21:22

I'm assuming you won't want to keep up the friendship after this (even if she didn't steal it she's not covering herself in glory), so I'd keep nagging until you get either a brand new one/yours "mysteriously" back/the cash.
