To think they should take him to the vets

My mum and dads dog had a full box of ‘black magic’ dark chocolates yesterday and today has vomiting, wheezing, and is laid down looking very sorry for himself but they won’t take to the vets saying none will be open now

Apologies. I just get very frustrated with animal neglect.

The OP didn’t neglect this dog. She sought advice and one way or the other, got appropriate care for him
Her parents are idiots, clearly. But in no way is she responsible for that!

Glad it all worked out ok

I get that…

AgitatedGoose · 29/12/2024 18:46

Thank you for the update. I’m very relieved he’s ok and hopefully on the road to recovery. He looks absolutely gorgeous. Please tell your parents to be more careful in the future. Dried fruit - currants, raisins and sultanas are also highly toxic to dogs.

Ihavethebestdogs · 29/12/2024 18:54

Thank you for updating us @Huggyhuggy I am so relieved he is okay! He is a beautiful boy. Thanks for looking out for him. I hope your parents invest in insurance, even at the most basic level.

Hi everyone. Thanks to everyone who commented and was kind and offered advice .. beautiful boy is home and is ok. And no more chocolate will be entering the house apparently.

Oh that's fantastic news!

OddBallNumber5 · 29/12/2024 19:02

Glad he’s ok OP and sorry you got such a pasting from some dicks on here.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 29/12/2024 19:04

What treatment did the vet offer?

Tortielady · 29/12/2024 19:12

That's good news @Huggyhuggy What a gorgeous boy he is; he's got such a sweet expression. Thank you for the update. 🐕

JC03745 · 29/12/2024 19:13

What did the vet do OP?

Lilactimes · 29/12/2024 19:41

Oh give over. You knew nothing of the sort.

To be fair when my small dog ate copious amounts of chocolate the vet was very nonchalant about it and told me if he'd been sick (which he had) there was basically nothing they could do and he would probably be sick and very unhappy for a day or so. They didn't even want to see him.

Peony15 · 29/12/2024 20:16

Been thinking about your dog all day, so relieved he's ok
and you saved him !

Tbf the dog could very easily have died eating that amount of chocolate.

noctilucentcloud · 29/12/2024 21:14

I'm so glad. Well done for looking out for him

OP didn't say what the dog weighed. And the 9 chocs he consumed... the chocolate would have been a coating with filling... not a solid bar.
When my greyhound was in her rebellious (dog)teen years, she ate a whole bar of dark chocolate. I called the vet, and considering her weight and the amount she ate... they were not concerned at all, and she suffered no ill affects (apart from a chocolate addiction).

A medium sized lurcher eating 9 small, chocolate shells? Nah.

Plus the box of Elizabeth Shaw dark mint crisps he’d eaten the day before. Seriously shocked at how blase some posters are about their pets. I’d never take a chance with my dogs.
