To think they should take him to the vets

My mum and dads dog had a full box of ‘black magic’ dark chocolates yesterday and today has vomiting, wheezing, and is laid down looking very sorry for himself but they won’t take to the vets saying none will be open now

That's what they say to get you in. I would give it another day's long as he is drinking it should hopefully pass through him. Would you run to the doctor if you had an upset stomach if your lucky to see a doctor?

And your professional qualifications in this area of expertise are???……..

Multiple vets/nurses/other dog professionals have all commented that he needs to see a vet. Not because he is definitely seriously ill, but as a precaution because he COULD be. None of us are making money from our advice, yet still we are all saying the same thing.

MerryMaker · 28/12/2024 22:37

No a vet commented saying the dog would probably be fine

3luckystars · 28/12/2024 22:38

Our dog ate a huge Easter egg, one of the massive ones and she is a tiny dog. I knew it was bad for them but didn’t realise how serious it was. I don’t know how but she survived it..

She has eaten some mad things and survived it all. I’m very glad you are taking the dog to the vet. Good luck x

Really? I missed that.

Doesn’t take away from the multiple other professionals who do not share that view though

A vet simply wouldn’t say this. They couldn’t possibly say that with authority and no clinical examinations and they wouldn’t. So therefore that poster was clearly full of shite.

Prettydisgustingactually · 28/12/2024 22:41

The OP won’t be back due to the sheer nastiness of the replies. Well done!

100% agree with this

It's not emotional

PickledPurplePickle · 28/12/2024 22:49

OP well done for taking control of the situation and getting the dog to the vet - poor little mite

I hope that you, and the dog, are OK

I’m going to report this thread - the number of people being disgustingly vile to the OP - who has done absolutely fuck all wrong- is wild.

Hope you’re okay, OP.

Good for you
Pity the poor dog

The replies haven't all been nasty by any means. The overriding element has been expressing urgency and concern for the dog. At least one post levelling abuse at the OP has been deleted and rightly so.

OonaStubbs · 28/12/2024 23:45

If someone had kept bleach or other poison in attractive wrappings within easy reach of unsupervised children, the response would be markedly different.

AgitatedGoose · 28/12/2024 23:54

This poor dog needs urgent veterinary treatment and if I could I’d actually report your parents to the RSPCA for being so neglectful. Lurchers are known for food stealing and personally I won’t even have chocolate in the house with my dog.

Not sure you’re right - they’d be saying they were irresponsible adults. As PPs are saying here - they’re irresponsible owners, OPs parents, as evidenced by the fact that they don’t care about their young dog being treated.

Also in the human poison situation people would be saying action needs to be taken (criminal offence). As PPs are saying in this situation.

Sometimes even responsible owners and parents don’t hide things as well as they think and pets/kids eat things that are poisonous to them. That isn’t the case here, but it does happen.

Are you actually that stupid?

Theobromine in chocolate is poisonous to dogs, potentially fatal. This time of year vets see a huge influx in dogs coming in with chocolate poisoning because people leave chocolate lying around where they wouldn't normally.

It isn't just a tummy ache, it causes massive issues for the heart and muscles, potentially leading to seizures, coma and death.

The toxicity of chocolate is well documented and requires rapid treatment to get rid of the poison out of the animals system if at all possible and then support them as they process whatever can't be removed.

Giving a dog who has ingested chocolate 'another day' to wait and see can absolutely kill.

But hey, why not go and eat some random mushrooms or neck a bit of arsenic and then chill out and 'wait and see' because it's probably just a tummy ache.

Idiot.

Bless you I bet the dog is still at home.

EveryonesFavouriteNumber · 29/12/2024 07:55

@Huggyhuggy hoping you got him to the vet last night and he's ok, please let us know

ThatRareUmberJoker · 28/12/2024 22:31

They would direct you to a&e and you'll have to wait.

Exactly! They'd say it was an emergency and treatment needed.

And no, you'd be triaged and treated quickly.

Well I would hope that someone who had taken a poison that was life threatening would be an emergency and treated immediately. Paracetamol overdose springs to mind, which can cause liver damage.

Anyway that’s not how emergency vets work, as I mentioned up thread I had to take my two in on Boxing Day for eating chocolate. I didn’t know which dog or if both had done so.

As it was it turned out it was only one of them. However, they had both had the injection to make them sick, so the chocolate was out of the system.

OK it wasn’t pleasant for the dog that hadn’t eaten the chocolate but better safe than sorry. Rather that than hope it ‘passed through him’
without causing any damage.

Theperenniallaunderess · 29/12/2024 08:39

@Huggyhuggy were you able to get the dog to the vet in the end? Are they okay?

Justnippinginthegaragelove · 29/12/2024 08:56

How is the dog OP?

LetThereBeLove · 29/12/2024 11:47

@ThatRareUmberJoker

At home and very likely awaiting collection for cremation. Honestly this really is absolutely shocking advice. If your DC accidentally drank poison would you ‘give them another day?’ Chocolate is poison to dogs and he had consumed not one box, but two in 48 hours. I very much doubt the dog has survived, which is why the OP has not returned. That and the awful comments she received when actually she was trying to get help for a dog that wasn’t hers.

Edited for typos

Its not her dog that's the only advice I could think of. She's a single mother with one child she don't have a lot of money. She could have rang the RSPCA that would cause a lot of problems. The parents might have decided he needed to be seen by a vet last night or didn't and he is feeling better today.
