To think they should take him to the vets

My mum and dads dog had a full box of ‘black magic’ dark chocolates yesterday and today has vomiting, wheezing, and is laid down looking very sorry for himself but they won’t take to the vets saying none will be open now

^^Show them this - and try the calculator.

I'd be wanting him seen be a vet - and there will be emergency vets open.

I've had words with MIL trying to feed the cats chocolate and us explaining it's toxic to them and trying to insist it's not and she'd never heard of that and knew many people who fed cats and dogs it and it was fine.

Lilacbloomers · 28/12/2024 18:04

You take him! Don’t just sit there idly

Huggyhuggy · 28/12/2024 18:05

Thank you tried the calculator and it says possible emergency and to visit a vets right away

A lurcher is what I have- and they are big dogs in terms of height/ length, but they aren’t very large in terms of overall volume, so the amount of chocolate that will be toxic (I think there’s a ratio vets use to work out of likely to cause damage) isn’t necessarily be as much as you would think. Poor thing.

Huggyhuggy · 28/12/2024 18:02

Elizabeth shaw mint collection he ate. 2 days prior to the dark chocolate. My dad took the dark chocolates to his room yesterday but their dog managed to get to it

So compound effect of eating two lots of chocolate then.

Your parents are idiots. He needs the vets, he’s eaten literal poison.

what breed/size is he?

He is a lurcher, medium size

Lurchers/greyhounds/whippetsalso process things differently to other breeds . He needs to be seen. My dog was given emetics immediately after a smaller amount of dark chocolate than that. Cocoa solids vary with brand so get all that info and take him to the vet straight away. The risk is liver damage so he could be in pain, the symptoms sound as though he is- he could also have foil stuck from the previous chocolates.

MammaKel · 28/12/2024 18:09

What's stopping you from taking the dog to the vets? You know it's an emergency, and your parents are obviously not bothered about the poor thing.

He is at serious risk of death and probably feels very poorly, just someone take him to the bloody vet.

Octopies · 28/12/2024 18:09

I think a lot of vets were open normal working hours yesterday and today. My dog has been to his physiotherapy appointment earlier and that would be classed as non urgent. They need to call the out of hours vet and arrange a payment plan if necessary (some treatment costs may be covered on insurance if they have it). It's not something you take a gamble on when early intervention from the vet can make them vomit and have a good chance of recovering.

FeegleFrenzy · 28/12/2024 18:10

Sadly it’s probably too late and the damage will have been done. They need to be made to vomit nearly immediately. I mean going to the vet will still give him the best chance, maybe some IV fluid can help flush stuff out? But any kidney damage, heart damage, etc may now be irreversible. Guess if he’s suffering he could at least be made comfortable/pts rather than die in pain. Your parents are disgusting.

Sloelydoesit · 28/12/2024 18:11

My dog died unexpectedly on Christmas Eve, had been ill the afternoon before and I had the vet out to him who treated his symptoms and gave him loads of pain relief. He died whilst asleep. No idea why he died - I will probably never know. But I can tell you now the last few days have been absolute hell. As you know what's wrong with him - get him to the out of hours vets

Fleurdalys · 28/12/2024 18:11

He will die
Bloody take him to the vets
Fucking hell

OrwellianTimes · 28/12/2024 18:12

Huggyhuggy · 28/12/2024 18:07

He is a lurcher, medium size

So 20-35kg dog?

assuming a 30kg dog 175g box of black magic nestle choc could well kill him.

Get him to the vets.

WiddlinDiddlin · 28/12/2024 18:12

Sounds like your parents are watching their dog die.. and so are you.

I realise it is their fault and it is their dog but this dog needs a vets and if they won't take him, you should.

Chocolate poisoning can take a while, and he has had two bouts of chocolate poisoning and won't have recovered from the first one yet. If he were my dog I'd have wanted him made sick immediately, and then on a drip to support him.

Most vets were open normal hours on Friday and this morning for those that open on a sat morning, so as it is now emergency out of hours, that is very much their own fault.

Please don't hesitate any further. It is too late to make the dog sick now, but not too late to support him on a drip as he processes the poison in his system.

Fleurdalys · 28/12/2024 18:12

Huggyhuggy · 28/12/2024 18:01

He ate the whole box so about 9 dark chocolates. He keeps yawning so is clearly stressed. He even jumped on my dad and was laid on his lap and he’s definitely not a lap dog! My mum has just said a day or 2 before this he also ate through a box of those mint chocolate selection, the wrapped ones but said he was fine after that

What bloody shit irresponsible owners
Poor dog

JC03745 · 28/12/2024 18:12

Is it a financial issue? Could you offer to pay (with them paying back) or take the dog yourself?

In fact I wouldn't be able to bring myself to speak to them again. Animal cruelty is a line in the sand as far as I'm concerned.

I’m not even a dog owner and even I know that chocolate is poisonous to dogs. Sleeping it off FFS?! Either your parents are stupid (presuming you’ve explained how serious this is but they don’t believe you?) or they’re evil, in which case take the fucking dog to the vet and don’t let them have him back. Poor thing. Man’s best friend indeed.

cherrypumpkin · 28/12/2024 18:15

Poor baby, he definitely sounds like he needs the vet's. We have two labs and they constantly try to eat things that will kill them, it's a nightmare. I hope you can get him seen asap, the would have induced vomiting if he had gone quickly but I guess it's a bit late for that. Has he toileted etc? Their usual vet should have a number on their webpage or answerphone message for their emergency service...

This is unfair. I’m a dog (lurcher) owner too, and you have no idea how old the poster is, whether they have financial means, whether there is a history of abuse in the family etc. please be kind, despite the distress I’m sure many of us feel at the thought of a dog suffering. There is also a distressed human on the other end of the internet asking for advice and help…

Susanisnotmyrealname · 28/12/2024 18:16

I wouldn’t be posting on MN. I would be at the vets with the poor dog.

Huggyhuggy · 28/12/2024 18:16

I’m just don’t sure what to do as I don’t drive to get him anywhere. They are saying it won’t be chocolate poisoning as it’s over 12 hours since he ate them and he’s only just getting unwell I’ve told them they need to take him but they’re coming up with excuses saying he will sleep it off
