To think they should take him to the vets

My mum and dads dog had a full box of ‘black magic’ dark chocolates yesterday and today has vomiting, wheezing, and is laid down looking very sorry for himself but they won’t take to the vets saying none will be open now

He keeps like he is trying to clear his throat

Yes they should phone the emergency vet number with the weight of the dog and the type and amount of chocolate it ate. They can then determine whether the amount is a toxic amount and needs medical treatment.

Oreosareawful · 28/12/2024 17:58

He needs an emergency vet right now. He could die.
Its a criminal offence to deny a pet vet treatment

AnOldCynic · 28/12/2024 17:58

Thy need to go to the emergency vets. Now. Dark chocolate is worse.

NImumconfused · 28/12/2024 17:58

Yes they absolutely should, but unfortunately what they probably mean is that the only vet they can access is an emergency one and they can't/won't pay the several hundred pounds extra fee for out of hours care on top of any treatment costs.

ABrandNewFamily · 28/12/2024 17:58

Have they checked thishttps://dog-chocolate-calculator.vets-now.com/dog-chocolate-calculator.vets-now.com/

BiteyShark · 28/12/2024 17:58

And dark chocolate is the worst type so I wouldn't ignore the symptoms. Poor dog.

ilovesooty · 28/12/2024 17:59

They're utterly neglectful and irresponsible. Their dog needs medical attention.

IhadaStripeyDeckchair · 28/12/2024 17:59

Given that dogs are allergic to chocolate & it can kill the dog they are unreasonable not taking the dog to yhe vets if its eaten a whole box of chocolates.

Do they realise that the dog may die?

CornishPorsche · 28/12/2024 18:00

Christ yes, that could kill him. And it's going to be a slow painful death. There are always emergency vets open 24/7.

TiredEyesToday · 28/12/2024 18:01

If I were you, I’d call a vet myself, give them the info on what’s happened, size and breed of dog etc. and then put them on speakerphone with your parents in the room. If the dog needs treatment, they’ll either be guilted into doing it, or risk committing a criminal offense, which, given the vet will be aware, is likely to be followed up…

Runningoutofthyme · 28/12/2024 18:01

Surely you don’t need to ask mumsnet, a quick google tells you the dog needs to see a vet

ilovesooty · 28/12/2024 18:01

In fact I wouldn't be able to bring myself to speak to them again. Animal cruelty is a line in the sand as far as I'm concerned.

Huggyhuggy · 28/12/2024 18:01

He ate the whole box so about 9 dark chocolates. He keeps yawning so is clearly stressed. He even jumped on my dad and was laid on his lap and he’s definitely not a lap dog! My mum has just said a day or 2 before this he also ate through a box of those mint chocolate selection, the wrapped ones but said he was fine after that

I think all vets (in England, no idea elsewhere) have a number for emergency vets when they are closed.

Good idea.

Lilith666 · 28/12/2024 18:02

I would have contacted the vet as soon as I found out about the dog eating them. Really hope dog is ok.

Huggyhuggy · 28/12/2024 18:02

Elizabeth shaw mint collection he ate. 2 days prior to the dark chocolate. My dad took the dark chocolates to his room yesterday but their dog managed to get to it

TiredEyesToday · 28/12/2024 18:02

if you want to take the dog to the vet yourself, you could try your local PDSA (Check they’re open first, or what emergency arrangements they have in place if closed). Given the amount of time the dog has been left suffering for, I’d be tempted to do this.

FestiveFruitloop · 28/12/2024 18:03

He needs a vet OP, right away. It's abhorrent that they're looking for excuses not to bother.

Huggyhuggy · 28/12/2024 18:03

My mum has said ‘he’ll sleep it off’ I’m worried as he seems to be breathing faster than usual. He is a lurcher

Runningoutofthyme · 28/12/2024 18:03

Do your parents not want the dog? I can’t understand them being so relaxed about their dog eating chocolate and on two occasions!

hope they don’t provide any childcare for you op as they sound pretty negligent

BotterMon · 28/12/2024 18:03

Should have gone after eating first box. They are neglectful bastards and shouldn't have an animal. Poor poor dog. Also any reason why you can't take the dog and bill your parents?

Todaypicard · 28/12/2024 18:03

Yes he needs to go, how big/what breed is he? Chocolate is toxic and he could die. All vets legally have to have an emergency provider for out of hours.
