To think they should take him to the vets

My mum and dads dog had a full box of ‘black magic’ dark chocolates yesterday and today has vomiting, wheezing, and is laid down looking very sorry for himself but they won’t take to the vets saying none will be open now

Can you call the vet and put term on loud speaker so your parents can hear how serious this is?

Jojimoji · 28/12/2024 18:24

This is a painful read. This dog is clearly suffering and three adults are doing nothing about it.

OP , please take the advice given here and at least start ringing emergency vets.

Hmm I wouldn't panic. 9 chocolates isn't that much for a 20 kg dog. The fillings aren't chocolate mostly so the total amount probably isn't that high. I'd ring the poison line and see what they say.

Chocolate doesn't cause liver or kidney damage. It's not the same as grapes or raisins. It's a short term things with neuro signs and circulatory signs, if he does sleep it off there shouldn't be any long term effects.

I mean you could spend thousands at the out of hours vets but chances are the dog will actually be fine...if a bit ill for a while

Ffs 🤦‍♀️
Really?
Are you a vet?

Do you think you’re helping? The poster or the dog?

She's complicit in their neglect. People are quite right to tell her so in my opinion.

MammaKel · 28/12/2024 18:25

It's clear that no one is going to help the poor little thing.

When he ultimately passes away due to this, absolutely disgusting neglect, try and make sure your parents don't own another animal for as long as they live.

This thread is truly heartbreaking.

My dog ate a 1kg bar of dairy milk - it took 4 days in the vets on a drip, charcoal and I think they made her sick for her to survive, she wouldn’t have otherwise…..

BobbyBiscuits · 28/12/2024 18:27

You could take him to Blue Cross. I think you don't have to pay if you're in financial difficulties. If money isn't an issue then an emergency vet.
If they refuse I think you should deal with it. Sad you should have to. But he could be very unwell.

It's dark chocolate. The worst kind. For the second time in as many days and also mint oil which does affect kidney and liver function. That dog is extremely ill.

First sensible post on this thread. 9 small chocolates, which will be mostly not chocolate, in a medium lurcher? I wouldn't be panicking either.

Of course vets will say any chocolate consumption is an emergency. All that lovely money...

Whatabouthow · 28/12/2024 18:27

It's too late to make him vomit now, but he needs supportive therapy to try and protect his internal organs. It might be too late, or it might be possible to save him, but he needs to go in.

Except the dog is exhibiting signs of illness?

This can't be real!
If it is, why are you on MN OP, why then drip feed you can't drive, what are you expecting us to say? You already know the dog should be at the vets! Find a solution- friend, family, neighbour, taxi!

It’s most definitely real. it’s the funding of this which is the issue, I’m trying to get through to them which is why I posted.

Okay hon- why don’t you DM the poster and offer your help directly, so you’re not complicit in the animals suffering too? Perhaps you can drive to where they are and give her a lift with the dog? Or pay for treatment?

Or you can accept that you don’t have the full picture, life isn’t always as black and white as we want it to be, not everyone has a spare 5k for emergency vet treatment for a pet that isn’t even theirs, and perhaps a gentler tone, may achieve more?

Anononony · 28/12/2024 18:29

I like the suggestion of calling the vet on speakerphone in front of your parents op, give that a go, maybe hearing it from a professional will give them a kick up the arse

TTPDTS · 28/12/2024 18:29

Can you afford a taxi?

Do they have insurance?

Honestly in your shoes I'd get the dog to the vet's and let your parents deal with the bill after. I wouldn't let the dog suffer!

OP, do your parents have pet insurance?

Mumto42005 · 28/12/2024 18:30

The dog definitely needs medical treatment. My small pug ate a two tier milk tray box to herself when she was a puppy… she was so sick.

A quick rush to the emergency vet’s and we left with a bag of charcoal to feed her with rice and chicken for the next two days, and thankfully she was ok. You definitely need to get the dog treatment though, especially with its symptoms.

Please don’t delay any further, especially with it being so unwell.

That is 1000000% not how vet treatment and payment works.

ilovesooty · 28/12/2024 18:32

At least get on the phone to the emergency vet and make your parents aware of what they say.

Zanatdy · 28/12/2024 18:32

I’d take the dog myself. I wouldn’t see an animal suffer a painful death. Dark chocolate is the worse

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/12/2024 18:33

Words fail me with your parents. They’re watching their dog die. In your shoes I would take to the vet and let your parents come up with the money.
