To think they should take him to the vets

My mum and dads dog had a full box of ‘black magic’ dark chocolates yesterday and today has vomiting, wheezing, and is laid down looking very sorry for himself but they won’t take to the vets saying none will be open now

I’m just don’t sure what to do as I don’t drive to get him anywhere. They are saying it won’t be chocolate poisoning as it’s over 12 hours since he ate them and he’s only just getting unwell I’ve told them they need to take him but they’re coming up with excuses saying he will sleep it off

Get a cab or you will have a dead dog tomorrow

Tortielady · 28/12/2024 18:17

That poor dog. He's had chocolate - dark chocolate at that, which is higher in theobromine, the substance that makes it toxic to dogs. He's also had mint, or mint oil. A quick Google tells me it's also toxic to dogs. OP, he needs the vet as a matter of extreme urgency. I'm so sorry.

Call a taxi? Call a family member? Call a friend?

Therealjudgejudy · 28/12/2024 18:17

The vets ASAP.

Your parents are disgraceful and shouldnt own an animal. The poor dog could die FFS!!!

BiteyShark · 28/12/2024 18:18

I've had to suck up the cost of emergency vets so many times but there is no way I can watch my dog suffer in pain no matter how much it costs.

I realise it's not your dog OP but I feel so sorry that its owners don't care.

Taxi, neighbour? Liver damage isn't immediate

Just make a bloody phone call and done be so passive. Ring the usual vets, it'll have the OOH details on an answerphone or divert you to them.

Lesina · 28/12/2024 18:18

Your parents are complete cunts. To let an animal suffer like that. Have you called an emergency vet?

MerryMaker · 28/12/2024 18:18

Oreosareawful · 28/12/2024 17:58

He needs an emergency vet right now. He could die.
Its a criminal offence to deny a pet vet treatment

I agree he needs a vet, but pets are denied vet treatment all the time due to money.

Huggyhuggy · 28/12/2024 18:05

Thank you tried the calculator and it says possible emergency and to visit a vets right away

In that case I hope you're doing something if your neglectful parents aren't. I'd be reporting their behaviour to the vet as well.

I understand you are probably overwhelmed. I would reiterate my suggestion from upthread. go somewhere private in the house and call a vet that is open and relatively local to you (google is your friend) and explain the situation. Put the vet on speakerphone (with their permission) and take the phone through to the room your parents are in, so they can hear the advice first hand

if they still choose not to follow the vets advice, you can either ask the vet if they will do a home visit and ask how much this will be. Explain the situation to them. They may have a suggestion for how you can access lower cost treatment if that’s what the dog needs

MerryMaker · 28/12/2024 18:20

If you ring the vet OP you will get their out of hours service. When I have done this they gave advice about whether the amount meant poisoning and my pet should be seen, or they would be okay. That advice was free.

justasking111 · 28/12/2024 18:21

We don't know the OP relationship with her parents. We don't know the financial circumstances. Please don't have a go at the daughter.

Agree it doesn't sound good.

MerryMaker · 28/12/2024 18:21

There will not be lower cost treatment to access. Vets are businesses, they do not give discounts

MalcolmMoo · 28/12/2024 18:21

Ffs vets are open! They have out of hours for this reason. It’s animal cruelty to just watch and do nothing!

Balloonhearts · 28/12/2024 18:22

It could be organ failure. Dark chocolate is extremely toxic especially in that quantity and a low weight breed. Its likely too late to save him now as treatment is time sensitive, they need to be treated within hours but they should at least get him to a vet as it's a truly horrible way to die without palliative care. He is suffering and they are disgusting excuses for human beings.

Huggyhuggy · 28/12/2024 18:22

Just to add, he has been sick a couple of times they have said. He is moving around but not much and his tail between legs. I don’t drive or have the funds available or I would have took him

Justnippinginthegaragelove · 28/12/2024 18:23

OP you must find a way to get that poor dog to the vets right now. He's been poisoned, he's literally dying.
My dog once ate 3 small pieces of dark chocolate and that was an emergency with induced vomiting, so a full box is without doubt an emergency.
Please don't let the poor baby die 😔

Dotto · 28/12/2024 18:23

You call the emergency vet right now. Your parents are being selfish tight fuckers who don't want to pay for potentially crucial treatment. Negligent arseholes. Dog deserves a better home.

JC03745 · 28/12/2024 18:23

This can't be real!
If it is, why are you on MN OP, why then drip feed you can't drive, what are you expecting us to say? You already know the dog should be at the vets! Find a solution- friend, family, neighbour, taxi!

Do you think you’re helping? The poster or the dog?

DinosaurMunch · 28/12/2024 18:24

Hmm I wouldn't panic. 9 chocolates isn't that much for a 20 kg dog. The fillings aren't chocolate mostly so the total amount probably isn't that high. I'd ring the poison line and see what they say.

Chocolate doesn't cause liver or kidney damage. It's not the same as grapes or raisins. It's a short term things with neuro signs and circulatory signs, if he does sleep it off there shouldn't be any long term effects.

I mean you could spend thousands at the out of hours vets but chances are the dog will actually be fine...if a bit ill for a while
