DH is a Freemason and it makes me cringe

He takes it so seriously. He's always gone through hobby phases but he's done this for years now and takes it very seriously. He's currently on the phone discussing 'Bretheryn' and it gives me the major ick, I actually want to cry listening to it.

I've tried to stand by him as he takes it so seriously so i attend events and smile encouragingly but I can't bear it. Never knew when I married him that he wanted to do this. It's not the worst thing he could do of course but it's an old boys club and we're only in our 30s!

He has lots of friends and other hobbies so it's not even his only social outlet, no idea why he needs this in his life and treats it like a second job.

I suspect he wasn't actually going to FM meetings... Great excuse though!

Well he must have been he took her to their ball at the end of the year and they all raved to her about her husband. Also the freemasons have the aprons and things as well.he had them all delivered to the house. I actually saw them and was like what is that and my friend said don't say you have seen them as he will freak.lol He was going up the ranks and doing a lot of serving for them. But whatever maybe he wasn't. I think their must be different types because some of them speak so highly and like it is a tea party others speak like it is dark and evil.

Don’t forget the orgies and “terrifying” oaths lol. I really can’t believe how many buy into conspiracy theories lol.

orgies have been proven to have happened at some FM events. There was a whole court case over it. Sorry but some of the CT are true . :)

I don't think everyone is right. I think some on here have vivid imaginations 😄but yes, I agree with the premise that any organisation will have variations due to demographics of membership.

I am anti Church because of my experiences however I recognise that there are a lot of good people with genuine purpose in churches. I often liken church to freemasonry. It's similarly prone to hierarchy, ritual, blind faith and duty, kindness, good deeds and misunderstanding with an unhealthy element of people using it as a cover for wrong doing

exactly...

If it is all above board then why the secrecy.

Both my Dad and an ex boyfriend were approached to join in the past but it was the secrecy that put them both off. Didn't know what they would be walking into.

anyone can join if they don’t have a criminal record and believe in a supreme being

hardly a secret organisation if most people can join.

Omg! Are you now claiming the Freemasons are some kind of sex cult!!! This thread is getting more hilarious by the second. Your friend had better watch out, no doubt next week he will be dancing naked with a goat during the full moon!🌕

to be honest yes I do believe that some FM use it as an excuse to indulge in these activities. And some are a sex cult. Just like some churches are evil.

Haven't read the full thread and won't pretend to be an expert but don't understand really why it's so icky? They have their little secret ceremonies and customs which I suppose is a bit odd but mostly they do charity work and try to live a noble, charitable lifestyle adhering to certain morals and values? Unless I'm mistaken? A religion of sorts but not focused so much on the god concept, more just lifestyle stuff.

There's a ladies Freemasons too.

Urghh. It makes them feel important I guess

They should feel important. My father was a.freemason.The Masons are a.network of workers who support one another and work to improve things in their communities and charities.
They also threw the best Xmas parties for children in the town. I'm in my 70's and still recall those wonderful parties

PinotPony · 27/12/2024 16:28

I don’t know much about the Freemasons but isn’t it akin to Round Table or Lions Club? My dad was in the local Round Table up to age 45 and I recall that the purpose was to socialise and make connections whilst doing good for charity and the community. There were lots of family events throughout the year. Is the Masons not the same?

Yup. We used to be Rotarians and I've quite a few mason friends. It's very similar to Rotary and Round Table. They don't do anything particularly extraordinary at their meetings, eat a meal, have a speaker and a bit of a chin wag. Then discussions about their charitable works. They do their bizarre ceremony which outsiders aren't allowed to see but other than that it's fairly harmless. However The main issue is that not all lodges admit women. my school has a lodge which I would have liked to have joined but as I don't have a penis I'm not allowed.

You can still join if you have a criminal record. Your joining must be approved however.

The ones in the lodges my father goes to will have forgotten what sex is, they are mostly about 110 and covered in cobwebs.

One glimpse of ankle and they'd be on a ventilator.

Plus your name has to be put forward by an existing member.
You can’t just walk in and sign up like the Rotary club.

Depends on the crime or if it’s been spent
and the standers of the lodge involved

Exactly. All these people saying that they were “asked to join” is simply not the way masonry works.

I’m just gonna say this. My old dad is a FM. My sister got very very ill (she lived in SA). She needed treatment her health insurance wouldn’t pay for. The FM’s in SA stepped in and helped with all the bills and checked on her when she was admitted into hospital. She died, the FMs helped with her funeral. I will be eternally grateful for what they did. I have nothing to say against them. They were and are bloody brilliant.

You can't just join rotary either. You must be invited to a meeting by a member and if you want to join you must be proposed by a member and seconded by another member. It's not like joining weight watchers.

Appreciate your family have benefitted from the connection but many peoples lives and careers have been negatively affected by them.
As they seek to promote their own to the detriment of others more capable

Oh and if anyone wants to do any actual research the library in Freemasons Hall holds amazing documentation about FReemasonary as well as other areas together with various objects. Their librarian is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Anyone can register as a reader and arrange a visit https://museumfreemasonry.org.uk/how-make-research-visit

Don't blame you. I would hate this. I've encountered 2 guys in the last couple of years who are Masons. Suffice to say, they were both decidedly odd.

PoliteFox · 28/12/2024 00:21

To be a Freemason, you have to believe in a supreme being. If you don’t believe in a god you can’t join.

Similar to Scientology, they have levels where each year a mason finds out more if allowed to progress. The people who never make it past lower levels won’t ever know the ‘secrets’ and will consider it no more than a drinking club…

Previously the government forced judges to declare if they were Freemasons, but the Freemason legal threatened to sue so was stopped. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/politics/57381.stm

A fair minded person informed of all available information may be led to wonder if the higher levels of Freemasons run the country.

As somebody does, and as Cummings recently said, it’s not the government.
