Is it just me? I don't think it's aged well at all, I thought the finale was rubbish!

Refusing to watch something yet still criticising it is immensely annoying behaviour.

My in laws had never watched it (how?!) then sat there boot faced.

I thought the first half was crap, it got much better in the second half. The subplot with the role play stuff between Gavin and Stacey was weak and found Joanna Page's acting cringeworthy. I think she’s just playing herself.

The role playing was so cringe! Like they had to shoehorn in some kind of storyline for them, since the show is named after them.

CosyRoby · 27/12/2024 00:37

It’s never been funny

Thank you! I have never got it, and have had so many people asking me if i watched it, perhaps they were asking to lament not cos it was ace…

I just don't get whats funny about any of the caricatures

Ginisatonic · 27/12/2024 08:16

I loved it. My young adult DDs also love it and so we were all looking forward to it. I thought it might be a disappointment but it wasn’t.
Biggest laugh out loud moment for me was definitely Pam talking about her new life when Mick dies. And the fact she’d already viewed a potential small apartment 😂
They tied up all the loose ends nicely. I even loved the Gwen/Dave Coaches pairing up.

FrothyCothy · 27/12/2024 08:18

It was alright. Everyone else in the room found it much funnier than my SIL and I! But it’s a very nostalgic show for me that I associate with Xmas so I could forgive it a lot.

Yep DH hasn’t ever watched it and announced he was watching the finale. I encouraged him to FaceTime his folks instead 😆

I loves it I does.

I think if you are Welsh there are aspects of the humour that may escape you. ‘Neil the baby’ for example is poking fun at how lots of Welsh families call their youngest ‘the baby’ way past ‘baby’ stage. It’s lush it is.

But in this instance, it’s also because Smithy’s name is Neil. So is Nessa’s father’s. So to distinguish the three of them it’s always Neil the baby.

Watch it again when you're on your own wia cuppa and some chocolate biscuits.x

BlueLimeRun · 27/12/2024 08:23

It was great. A few very funny moments and some heart warming scenes. Loved Mick’ speech, Neil the baby etc G and S have always been the weakest characters imo.

No need for people who didn’t like it to be sneery.

ThePollutedShadesOfPemberley · 27/12/2024 08:24

I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I'm not a huge fan though.

There were moments where a good verbal joke would have been there but the moment was lost and a lot of it felt so contrived compared to the original episodes.

The original is worth watching a second time but the finale? Not for me.

I think Ruth Jones is brilliant. JC not so much. She's worth so much more than him.

I’m surprised how tolerant Mick was of Pam given this tbh

EmsSummer · 27/12/2024 08:28

To me it was the best finale of a show I’d seen

BrickRedLipstick · 27/12/2024 08:32

It had a lot of references to the past shows and the jokes needed you to understand the characters and past events so watching the final episode may not have been funny if watching it for the first time. Despite being called Gavin and Stacey the show is really about Smithy and Nessa’s relationship, hence the ending was theirs.
I thought it was brilliant and very funny. I laughed out loud loads of times. Pete’s list of things Dawn has done since their split made me howl, especially her sitting behind him in the cinema. Bryn wearing the full kit on the Stag Do, Nessa vaping and smoking at the same time. All hilarious. It was so beautiful that Neil the Baby had grown up to be a lovely young man. I found that really touching, as well as the moments we were shown that sometimes friends make better family than actual family. There was so much going on and Ruth Jones and James Corden did a pretty magnificent job with it.

ruffler45 · 27/12/2024 08:33

Never watched it...before or now

ChessieFL · 27/12/2024 07:03

He was at their wedding! Sitting in the front row. And seen in the pub afterwards. He just wasn’t in the final photo.

Was he? I missed that. Too much alcohol had been consumed on my part by that point I guess 🤣

BrickRedLipstick · 27/12/2024 08:36

And yes, I agree with the PP about Pam’s well thought out plan after Mick dies. I was laughing so hard at that.
Dave Coaches calling Gwen ‘Sugar Tits.’ If you didn’t know the characters that would fall flat but those of us who have loved her over the years would find that funny.

Pamosonic · 27/12/2024 08:37

It wasn't a great finale no. It felt rushed especially at the end when it all flipped round. They could have got the same ending if he just said yes at the start of the episode and then focused on Smithy and Ness's stag and hen parties, the wedding organisation, the relationship between Smithy and Ness, etc.

BrickRedLipstick · 27/12/2024 08:37

What a shame @ruffler45 You have missed a wonderful show.

BrickRedLipstick · 27/12/2024 08:38

That would not have worked at all @Pamosonic

SallyWD · 27/12/2024 08:43

I've never actually watched it before but watched the Christmas special with family. I was pleasantly surprised! I found it funny and touching.

NearlyNewHip · 27/12/2024 07:30

My youngest sister is called ....the baby. God love her, she's 38 with children of her own and when we ask where's the baby it all gets a bit confusing 😂

😂😂😂😂 I loves it. Lush it is. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

saltysandysea · 27/12/2024 08:46

It was okay. Love Pam and Mick's relationship, Gavin and Stacey are ok bit clearly taking a back to seat to the Nessa and Smithy storyline. Dave and Gwen - odd but under the circumstances made sense. No point introducing a new character at this late stage.

The angle on getting older and stag do was quite clever - times have moved on and things have changed.

Not entirely comfortable with the hate for Sonia - she was in the wrong relationship but prepared to go along with it (like Smithy). Not wanting a stripper in her face did not make her stuck up. Times have moved on and she preferred a different type of hen do. Bit of bridezilla but seriously - does that make her an evil person.

Neil the baby was a nice touch.

BrickRedLipstick · 27/12/2024 08:49

I don’t think Sonia is an evil person but she was very controlling and said she didn’t want Smithy to see the others after they were married.

ReformMyArse · 27/12/2024 08:49

They should’ve got Gwen together with Marco from the beach takeaway.
The Picasso might have broken down at a service station (always good fodder for fun) and Dave could have come to the rescue in his coach (invoking Bryn’s disgust).
If they insisted Dave got together with Gwen he should have called her sugar lips not sugar tits.
Dawn was terrible, her face unrecognisable, could hardly make out what she was saying. Her surgeon should be jailed.
Pam and Mick at the beginning was not a funny skit.
Nessa ripping off the elderly went too far.
They should have put in sweet moment for Bryn. He was just mean for most of it.
They need to run it past some trusted critics as some of this could easily have been fixed.

But there were lots of great moments as mentioned by others on the thread. Ruth and James were terrific in their roles.

LasagneLasagne · 27/12/2024 08:51

I enjoyed it but I didn't LOVE it.
Also, the whole Dawn/Pete plot left me uncomfortable because he didn't want to get back together.
