Is it just me? I don't think it's aged well at all, I thought the finale was rubbish!

I’ve never watched a single episode and wanted to tune in last night but DH said, apart from Gavin & Stacey name any other characters, I admitted defeat. Therefore I can’t really comment 🤣

I thought I was the only person who has never watched it. My family have been telling me for years that it's hilarious and it wasn't that I doubted them but just never got round to seeing it from the beginning.

Joystir59 · 27/12/2024 01:25

I liked it but thought Bryn, the only gay character should have found love in the finale, rather than Gwyn and Dave getting together. I disliked what they did with Bryn's character, making him dark and pervy

BackoffSusan · 27/12/2024 01:26

Bloody loved it!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 27/12/2024 01:29

Loved it. DH was in tears at the end.

I thought the first half was crap, it got much better in the second half. The subplot with the role play stuff between Gavin and Stacey was weak and found Joanna Page's acting cringeworthy. I think she’s just playing herself.

Yes Joanna Page is a really bad actress.

BlueWhippetsForever · 27/12/2024 01:31

It was great! I agree it would've been nice to see Bryn paired off and the Gwen/Dave thing didn't work for me, but the rest was brilliant. Loved seeing the familiar characters back together, the script was good, it felt like a continuation of earlier episodes, not forced like a lot of specials years later can be. A nice uncynical show 😃

WallaceinAnderland · 27/12/2024 01:32

Bryn, the only gay character...

Erm, what about Jason?

TicketyBoo11 · 27/12/2024 01:40

I watched a bit, sped up the bits that weren’t interesting..I was depressed at how old everyone looked. Yes, I know I’m old too but still…
I prefer the re-runs when I’m having a lazy evening ..

Yes Joanna Page is a really bad actress.

I don't think I'd personally call her a really bad actress (although I agree she's certainly no Alison Steadman); but I think her character was always one of the weakest and quite one-dimensional. It relied a lot on her being endearing, sweet and innocent, which was a lot more believable in her 20s than it is now in her 40s.

Maybe people expect more because her character's name is in the title, and she does appear a lot; but I think she was never intended to be the most involved or multi-faceted character, and maybe only really there to serve as a situational support to the deeper characters.

I'd possibly liken her a bit to Trigger from OFAH: involved in many of the best scenes, but herself quite predictable and simplistic.

Melodyfair · 27/12/2024 02:50

I thought it was lovely and so nice personally to see a show from its debut to its finale, though a bit depressing as I was in my 20s when it started and my 40s now, I’ve aged along with the cast, if the Gavin and Stacey finale had been broadcast in 1997 then the show would have started in 1980, teen me would have thought it sooo long running and out of date 😂.

I struggle to see past James Corden being a real life twat, but managed. Sheridan smith made a great cameo and loved seeing Russell Tovey and of course the amazing Allison Steadman “Lawrence would you go back into the kitchen please and make your ‘little sandwich!’”. Luckily Allison is in the brilliant sitcom ‘Here we go’. But I just loved the Gavin and Stacey finale.

For those who found it funny, which were the bits where you laughed?

Maybe I need to watch it again as I didn't find it funny but the previous series had loads of great, really funny moments.

I didn't get Gwen and Dave. There was no chemistry between them before and none now, truth be told.

Dawn and Pete, just a bit crap.

very silly, but i enjoyed the whole "what's Dirtbag's actual name" "i dont know, i'll find out" "havent you known him for 20 years?" "yeah....."

SindySnowflake · 27/12/2024 02:59

I loved it.

Dawn going on a date with Chinese Alan 😂

SD1978 · 27/12/2024 03:06

If you've always liked it, the finale was what needed to happen (for me and everyone I know anyway) if you never liked it then it doesn't matter. Like any show some people like and others don't

Was it Dirtbag or the other one with a nickname (his name escapes me right now): where Smithy didn't know his name, so he asked him - and he didn't actually seem to know his own real name?!

FizzyBisto · 27/12/2024 03:40

I did wonder at one stage whether they might have multiple weddings at the end - maybe Dawn & Pete, Gwen & Dave, Bryn & Jason, even just a single snapshot of each happy couple on their wedding days - after the full scene that we did see of Nessa & Smithy's wedding.

Also, I know they mentioned her in the dialogue, but a little 'in memory of Margaret John' (Doris) at the end would have been nice. I know (IIRC) they did that after the 2019 special, but what with this being the very last one ever, would one final time again for 3 or 4 seconds have hurt?

Eww, Bryan and Jason are Uncle/Nephew

Calmhappyandhealthy · 27/12/2024 04:46

It was good to get a Nessa and Smithy wedding. I liked that.

I thought the 2024 finale was way better than the 2019 Christmas show, which I hated

But overall the 2024 show was patchy imo

Gwen and Dave Coaches in a relationship? Ridiculous!
Stacy? Really poor acting and the whole role play idea was very silly
Dawn? Awful all round
Mick and Pam? I just wasn't feeling it with them. It seemed forced but I do love them both as actors (generally)
Bryn? I thought something weird happened to his character....he seemed odd

I'm glad we've got "closure" , that feels right to me. Although the finale wasn't great .....I did enjoy it overall

I see the BBC is hoping for a spin off series....not sure how well that would work 🙄

MumsGoneToIceland · 27/12/2024 04:56

I loved it. I agree that it wasn’t as funny as other episodes but I don’t think it was meant to be, it was about finishing off the storyline and seeing where each of the characters were in their lives. I think if they’d have acted as they did in older episodes, it would have just been about getting the gags in for the sake of it. I still laughed out loud several times though.

Rather than exceeding on the funniness levels, I think it did well on the surprise elements - e.g whether Smithy had said yes to Nessa at the beginning, Dawn and Pete, Gwen and Dave, And there were some great poignant moments - e.g Mick saying how Smithy had become like a son to him and then at his wedding, Smithy trusting only Mick’s opinion as to whether he should go through with it or not.

BigDahliaFan · 27/12/2024 05:10

I'm not a fan, seen it a few times, but I laughed at the special out loud and found it sweet.

Nettleteaser101 · 27/12/2024 05:15

I loved it. It was nice to see everyone again. Nessa hasn't aged at all and I got choked up when Ian the baby sang Blackbird so lovely. It was better than I thought it would be.

Mirandawrongs · 27/12/2024 05:17

It wasn’t really worth the hype.

gwen and dave -I quite liked, gwen deserves some fun after Trevor seems so awful!
gavin and Stacey - seem to have no attraction
nessa and smithy - are the only ones with attraction
Pete and Dawn - never understood these two but what has happened to dawns face? Was it bad fillers?

Edingril · 27/12/2024 05:23

The stag nigjt might have been a little funnier if they had it as a clicked older person's one so they all realised how older they all are instead of recreating their youth and doing it that way

Dontcallmescarface · 27/12/2024 06:19

All I've seen of G&S are clips of "the best bits" and the trailer for this episode. All I could think was if that's the "best" then the rest of it must be dire. The whole fishing trip "joke" just came across as creepy and wrong.

SometimesCalmPerson · 27/12/2024 06:28

I don’t think it needed to be hilariously funny now that it’s reached its end. It needed to hit
a nostalgic sweet spot, make us remember things that were funny in the past, and give us all the storyline we wanted.

It made me cry, I loved it!
