Is it just me? I don't think it's aged well at all, I thought the finale was rubbish!

I kind of agree. I think it was overhyped massively in the build up though.

I do get irritated when people say Gavin and Stacey are dull etc they are supposed to be! It’s a plot device …

It could have half as long. The actual plot was predictable but it wasn’t really about that. Just getting us there could have been funnier.

I don’t think it can ‘never come back’ but it’s probably a relief to the writers that it has an end.

I loved it. It was nice to see everyone again. Nessa hasn't aged at all and I got choked up when Ian the baby sang Blackbird so lovely. It was better than I thought it would be.

Neil, its Neil the baby

I loves it I does.

I think if you are Welsh there are aspects of the humour that may escape you. ‘Neil the baby’ for example is poking fun at how lots of Welsh families call their youngest ‘the baby’ way past ‘baby’ stage. It’s lush it is.

My youngest sister is called ....the baby. God love her, she's 38 with children of her own and when we ask where's the baby it all gets a bit confusing 😂

I think Sacey interacting with other characters seems more natural same with Gavin

But together they seem too caricature like, I can handle boring but not fake

whatisforteamum · 27/12/2024 07:31

I used to love it.2019 was a bit over hyped.
I thought I would watch the Xmas day one though.
This one started poorly with Mick and Pam seaming stale, forced.
It got better though and James Corden held the thing together.
Just shows you can't force the laughter.
The comedy used to be Nessa in her lorry, Smithy's sayings ,Pam and Mick's chemistry.
.Like only fools it was funny at the time.

Tinselskirt · 27/12/2024 07:32

I liked it. Bryn was an idiot though, as someone said none of the warmth and caring side he has in previous episodes came through. His reaction to gwen and Dave was too OTT. Im happy gwen got herself a boyfriend, she deserves it after all those years of just making omelettes and putting herself last all the time.

I was totally with sonia on the stripper thing. Hate them.

Also my over riding thought is that smithy isn't good enough for nessa. I hope she left him hanging and went on her 6 month work contract.

It does makes sense that smithy would leave her hanging for years though - he's a coward who is scared of commitment.

Hobbesmanc · 27/12/2024 07:37

It's been a lovely and well crafted journey but I thought there was some lazy writing in the last episode. It was too easy to make Sonia and her friends so unlikeable so we'd be rooting for nessa. I've never liked the whole fishing story. Should have been quietly dropped ages ago.

I absolutely hate the whole fishing trip nonsense.

If you had never seen it before or didn’t like it in the past it was going to be a big ask to rock up on Christmas Day and enjoy it,

To those of us that always enjoyed it were “in from the start” and feel nostalgic about it it was a lovely altogether family viewing experience. Just perfect we all thought it was great.

ColinOfficeTrolley · 27/12/2024 07:14

It was never funny. Or clever. It's for people who need to be spoon fed their humour

Interesting, I’d say the opposite, if you need humour spoonfed, then you wouldn’t like it as it’s quite gentle, observational about British behaviour, comedy.

MintShaker · 27/12/2024 07:41

It never was funny

Namerchangee · 27/12/2024 07:49

I enjoyed the series when it was on. It’s never been screamingly funny but it’s sweet and comforting. I didn’t make it to the end of the finale as I was shattered but will sit down and watch the rest of it on iPlayer. With so much gloom and doom in the world, this is just a little bit of light and comfort. Hard to get worked up about it really, it is what it is!

CosyRoby · 27/12/2024 00:37

It’s never been funny

Comments like this are so annoying. Just because you personally don’t find something funny it doesn’t automatically make it unfunny.

TheaBrandt · 27/12/2024 07:55

Funny is subjective. Swathes of the population must love Mrs Browns boys 🙄🙄.

It’s observational comedy which is clever. It’s not stand up. What is it you do find funny then?

SensibleSigma · 27/12/2024 07:56

It’s about cultures- the strength of each family’s culture and how families need to make room for other people.

Pam and the towels is a classic.
Gwen having a life of her own, with Jason Stacey and Bryn struggling to comprehend it. Where is she?

Essex flash and Barry modesty.

Nessa has always been massively complicated- fantastic back story and ethically questionable, but loyal.

Neil the baby is the product of two morally dubious, self centred and unreliable people who manage to put him first and do it right, despite their usual tendencies!

SensibleSigma · 27/12/2024 07:58

And poor old Bryn is the result of a closeted society. Jason is the new Bryn in a friendlier world.

My biggest gripe is the serial killer names. Disrespectful, imo.

LizzoBennett · 27/12/2024 07:59

I didn't laugh either, but it was nice to see the ending. I think it's a bit harder to inject comedy into these one-off type shows when there has been a big jump in time and the audience needs to be taken up to speed on where all of the characters are now as well as carrying a new plot.

SnoopySantaPaws · 27/12/2024 07:59

@MumsGoneToIceland

Mick saying how Smithy had become like a son to him and then at his wedding, Smithy trusting only Mick’s opinion as to whether he should go through with it or not.

Loved that!!

I enjoyed it. I was at a friends so tried not cry or they'd have ripped the piss out of me!!

I did cry a bit at Nessa saying goodbye to Beil the baby' I'm looking forward to watching it again at home.

im sad they stopped making new series when they did & it's a shame it's the final, but sometimes best leaving people wanting mire. Plus the bits that appeal/make it 'what it is' aren't really acceptable these days (why most 'lighter' tv is just crap these days)

Do think Dave Coaches & Gwen was a bit weird. And inconsistent - insisting this is real live and mature etc, then calling her 'Sugar tits' like all women are much the same to him.

loved the fact that Dawn & Pete never changed!!

found Micks face a bit discombobulating!

Did also find Stacey instigating the role play a bit odd,

could go on for hours but I'll shut up now.

verdict overall 'it was tidy'

FiveStoryFire · 27/12/2024 08:00

Absolutely loved it. It was the perfect ending.

whyhere · 27/12/2024 08:01

I've tried a few times with it over the years, and never found it at all amusing (and I'm part Welsh!).

And this is why it's better to end it before people want it to fully stop being what it is.

MsPug · 27/12/2024 08:04

Oh I loved it. Like a warm, comfortable blankie. Loved that Neil the Baby is still (one of) the same Neil the Baby from the beginning as well. When Nessa said goodbye to him was a very powerful scene imo but I guess that's a bit subjective!

MeanderingGently · 27/12/2024 08:06

I can never get the Gavin & Stacey hype - the trailers are bad enough, not funny and not my sort of thing. I must be old and curmudgeonly or something, because I refuse to watch it.
Glad so many others enjoyed it though, each to their own!

Notouchingmybhuna · 27/12/2024 08:08

I was a big fan of the originals but found the finale very flat and predictable. There was only ever going to be one ending.

pilates · 27/12/2024 08:09

It was ok although a little predictable. I hope they leave it now and don’t bring out another one.
