Is it just me? I don't think it's aged well at all, I thought the finale was rubbish!

Interesting, I’d say the opposite, if you need humour spoonfed, then you wouldn’t like it as it’s quite gentle, observational about British behaviour, comedy.

I agree. And there is specific humour that only Welsh people or those who have lived in Wales would get. I imagine it’s the same for Essex. I think if you take it at face value it’s a bit crap but if you see the observational humour it’s subtle and fab.

I enjoyed it but I didn't LOVE it.
Also, the whole Dawn/Pete plot left me uncomfortable because he didn't want to get back together.

I don’t think Dawn and Pete will be together for very long.

BrickRedLipstick · 27/12/2024 08:55

It’s very clever and nothing about the humour is spoon fed. The characters work very hard for their laughs.

BalloonSlayer · 27/12/2024 08:56

I am obviously alone in this, having read the thread, but I thought Gavin interrupting the wedding and the "stand up if you agree with me" was horribly cruel and humiliating. Can you imagine being on the receiving end?

Sonia wasn't a horrible person (fair play to her for refusing the stripper AND she was polite about it). She was a bridezilla of course and yes not right for Smithy but I thought that bit was awful.

x2boys · 27/12/2024 08:56

It's brilliant but like everything comedy is subjective if you don't like it or get it fair enough but dont assume everyone shares your opinions
Also it's very nuanced so if you had never seen a single episode before the finale it wouldn't have made s,lot of sense there are a lot of in jokes

Never watched it...before or now

What a useful post.

Rocksaltrita · 27/12/2024 09:01

Mixed feelings here. Liked it but did think they’d hyped it up so much that it was always going to be an anticlimax. I did wonder if it should have been left in the late 2000s, the hen party only served to show how things have changed, and made me feel old! Everyone so woke and on their phones, rather than having a laugh… It was sweet enough and there were lots of in jokes and parallels with earlier episodes if you knew to look for them/recognized them. And the ending was just what we all wanted.

I think Gavin just couldn't bear to see Smithy make a,huge mistake ,and Smithy, had also interrupted Nessa,s wedding to Dave to tell she was making a huge mistake
Sonia was awful but the actress who played her did a,brilliant job making the audience loathe her sign of a very good actress.

fedup33 · 27/12/2024 09:02

I watched about 2 minutes of it once years ago.

JustCrow · 27/12/2024 09:10

Sonia was an awful person! Openly saying that Smithy should be grateful to be with her because he’s “punching”.

She’s objectively better looking than he is, sure, but I’d be interested in her back story. I’d bet money that before Smithy she had typical flash, TOWIE type Essex boyfriends whom she couldn’t keep due to being a cow.

Then along comes Smithy, reasonably affluent, generous and more importantly absolutely dazzled by her looks.

She was horrible and I only wish he’d told her that in front of everyone.

Another valuable contribution to the thread 🤣

Praxoulla007 · 27/12/2024 09:11

I thought it was a funny gentle comedy just right for Christmas Day, not hilariously funny but gentle humour that appeals to all ages

I can never get the Gavin & Stacey hype - the trailers are bad enough, not funny and not my sort of thing. I must be old and curmudgeonly or something, because I refuse to watch it.
Glad so many others enjoyed it though, each to their own!

How can you comment on something you have never watched?🙄

Barney16 · 27/12/2024 09:14

I thought it was a masterpiece. I cried through most of it. The scene where she said goodbye to Neal the baby was beautifully done. And the hen/stag do scenes were brilliant. It's so well written. Ruth Jones is amazing.

He kind of did when I said he had met someone better than her 17 years ago
Sonia never found Nessa a,threat ,because objectively she's very beautiful with a fabulous figure and very different to Nessa so would never think Smithy, would leave her for Nessa ,but beyond her looks she's very shallow.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 27/12/2024 09:18

I was happy the wonderful Pam Ferris had a brief moment on screen, in all her clammy-looking, exhausted glory. She's brilliant.

Eww, Bryan and Jason are Uncle/Nephew

I thought I was going mad for a minute there, like nope, yuck!

Yes I thought same

And he only stayed so long as she is so good looking - he is the sort of person to need a very attractive girlfriend to basically impress other men

It was great! I agree it would've been nice to see Bryn paired off and the Gwen/Dave thing didn't work for me, but the rest was brilliant. Loved seeing the familiar characters back together, the script was good, it felt like a continuation of earlier episodes, not forced like a lot of specials years later can be. A nice uncynical show 😃

Who would they.paired Bryn of with though?
I thinki it's assumed Bryn,is in the closet, about his sexuality and is gay but does Bryn know he's gay?

RoyalCorgi · 27/12/2024 09:25

I think as a piece of drama you could pick holes. For example, why did Smithy and Sonia wait for five years from their engagement to get married? Why did Smithy never mention that Nessa had proposed to him? Why did nobody tell Smithy that they really disliked Sonia? Why did nobody think to call Nessa on her mobile phone at the end? Obviously they had to ignore all that stuff to contrive a plot that would give us the ending everyone wanted.

Putting all that aside, I thought it was very funny. Bits that made me laugh: Smithy saying "it's my stag do - the most important day of my life"; Gavin saying "the finest Cossack dancing I've ever seen"; Nessa smoking a cigarette and puffing a vape at the same time; Pete's new appearance after his divorce.

The bit that I thought was a little off was Bryn's over the top response to Gwen getting together with Dave Coaches - I don't understand why he was so upset about it.

But on the whole, better than I was expecting. Was pleased that they went for a happy ending and didn't kill off any of the characters.

Rummly · 27/12/2024 09:25

Tidy, I thinks.

I’m surprised how tolerant Mick was of Pam given this tbh

I wasn’t at all. That was very much in line with their relationship and why it works so well.

Dontcallmescarface · 27/12/2024 06:19

All I've seen of G&S are clips of "the best bits" and the trailer for this episode. All I could think was if that's the "best" then the rest of it must be dire. The whole fishing trip "joke" just came across as creepy and wrong.

I dont understand posts like this
You have never seen a single episode so how can you possibly say it's dire?
And comedy is subjective anyway.

Blarn · 27/12/2024 09:28

I loved the Pete and Dawn thing, just for the amazing look of fear in Pete's eyes when Dawn said that yes, they were back together!

x2boys · 27/12/2024 09:32

I loved Nessa,s references to her age at one point she said trade had never been so bad in the 47 years she'd had worked on the slots
Than another point she said she was only 29 years old and had her whole life ahead of her 😂
