Is it just me? I don't think it's aged well at all, I thought the finale was rubbish!

Whatever some nit pickers say they wrote and produced a program that we as an extended family from 16-78 anticipated planned for sat down on Christmas Day to watch which made us laugh and one of us (me) cry. Haven’t had a show like that for Christmas Day for years. They make it look easy but it’s hard. Look at Outnumbered they tried and failed.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 29/12/2024 07:45

The finale wasn’t as funny as the early episodes but how could it be? It was sweet and rounded things off nicely.

TheaBrandt · 29/12/2024 07:46

The demonising of James corden is pathetic. Certain newspapers have it in for some celebrities as it gets them clicks / advertising so everything they do is magnified ten fold. A friend works in this industry and has seen this happen to the actors on her programmes. It’s insane. And you are falling for it!

I loved it. Everyone I know (whom I’ve spoken to about it - and it is a few to be fair having seen lots family and friends over the last couple of days) - also loved it.

Also I’m pretty bored of the whole predictable, British institution of bringing successful-people-down-hating of James Corden. He’s acted in some brilliant shows (History Boys being my favourite) hosted a successful and long running chat show in the US and written and acted in a successful and also long running sit-com, to name but a few. Who else has managed that? I haven’t. Ok he’s supposedly been rude in restaurants where he’s had bad service - he wouldn’t be the first one. The press and many of the public just love to jump on a bandwagon and vilify anyone who dares to achieve any modicum of success 🥱

To me, it was a perfect ending. I loved it and will be watching it again soon.

We saw him in The Constituent with Anna Maxwell Martin at The Old Vic this summer and he was brilliant.

I really wanted to find out what happened on the fishing trip!

I just don't care any more. That gag is so tired, they should have dropped it ages ago.

AhBiscuits · 29/12/2024 08:23

I enjoyed it and will probably rewatch at some point.
The bits I didn't think worked were
Dave and Gwen
The whole role play thing.

Also Sonja going for Smithy is a bit far fetched.

Aintnobodygottime · 29/12/2024 08:25

BrickRedLipstick · 29/12/2024 07:25

Why do you keep saying it’s ’slightly strange?’ That in itself is odd. Comedy is a particularly subjective thing and nowhere have I said that people who disagree with me are ‘thick.’ What I did say was if people can’t see how clever the writing is, they are probably not very clever themselves. I think that’s true. For some reason you have taken exception to this which is your problem, not mine. I feel like you will be like a dog with a bone and continue to come after me. Go for it because I couldn’t care less in all honesty.

I don’t want to say that people who don’t find G&S funny are not clever, as humour is so subjective, but the extensive comments about the show here and elsewhere have been a bit depressing just in how many people didn’t get the jokes at all. Including those who are fans of it! I feel sometimes like I’ve been watching a different series all these years.

Kashmiri24 · 29/12/2024 08:34

They had to pair Dave Coaches with Stacey’s mum, otherwise the whole dash to the docks wouldn’t have worked. I do agree though, a most unlikely couple 😍

Longma · 29/12/2024 09:28

I enjoyed it.
Though I've seen the rest of the programmes it wasn't something I'd watch religiously or anything but we watched the finale, not really expecting a huge amount from it tbh.

But I liked it. It tied up all the story lines, and had a suitably happy ending.

It was a gentle 'feel good' type of comedy imo, and the finale matched that.

Not a popular opnion on mumsnet but I agree
And I have a little crush on Smithy.

TheHallmarkedMan · 29/12/2024 10:04

I posted this on another thread about James Corden and the NYC restaurant incident.

Re Corden being a shit to waitstaff. That big bust up he had in an NYC restaurant was because his wife was served her allergen and he was pissed off.

The restaurant manager was then all over tv and social media, banning him, reinstating him banning him again then Making some sort odd offer to him.

It wasn't how the media painted it. Albeit I doubt he was blameless either, but as an allergen family, I'd lose my shit if my DIL was served peanuts

She ordered an egg yolk omelette and he complained that it included some egg white. Are you telling me she is allergic to egg white but eats the yolks?

TheaBrandt · 29/12/2024 10:12

Having heard recently how the media behaves when they decide they have it in for someone I refuse to be manipulated anymore.

One paper followed an actor so knew they weren’t “partying” then plastered up articles saying they were with old pictures because hating on them for clicks got more ad money. That’s what it is. Pathetic.

MikeRafone · 29/12/2024 10:16

which is fine, but your are all family and friends and are like to have common sense of humour and likes, not always but for the majority - so its not a wide yard stick

the fact 80% on here disagree with the op is a far better yard stick, but even then the thread will appeal to those that have watched the program and comment

Only got to watch it last night. Big fan of the whole show.

It was ok and I enjoyed it. It was made to tie things up I guess.

Loved Mick, he is such a strong character and father figure to Smithy. When he stood up at the wedding, that was my favourite bit.

Really wish Dave didn't call Gwen, Sugar T**s.

I was disappointed there wasn't a nicer tie up for Bryn. His character was different to the previous shows, he was quite mean and odd which was a shame.

Oh and I doubt very much that Ruth Jones broke up a marriage all by herself, what nonsense.

Of course she didn’t break up the marriage by herself but she is implicated and partly responsible by getting involved with a married man. I certainly would never do that.

Again, so what? You're a better person than her, well done, your medal is in the post.

Another vote in the not funny, never found it funny camp. The two Welsh girls are annoying and poor actors. The best actor is Alison Steadman.
Years ago I thought I better watch an episode of this thing people are raving about. It didn't even amuse me. Give me Black Adder, Fast Show, dinnerladies any day over this over hyped dross.

So you have watched one episode and on that basis have come this conclusion 🤔

It's probably not a true allergy, but I do have some sympathy with Corden here. Since when is complaining a crime?

It's exhausting and frustrating having to repeatedly explain allergies and have waiters treat you like you're bring annoying when they get it wrong.

Have you watched anything else with Ruth Jones in? Or anything she has written? Some of her other shows are very good. I like Gavin and Stacey, thought Black Adder was just stupid though, people have different tastes, as they should or the world would be very boring.

How many episodes do you need to watch to find it funny? 😆

You might not find it funny everyone has different tastes but it's not something you can watch a random episodes of and get it ,there are a lot of in jokes that wouldn't make sense to you ,you have ti watch it from the beginning to understand it.

SomewhereInTheMIdlands · 29/12/2024 20:50

Hated the first episodes, so never watched it again.

Fair enough I watched one random episode years ago and didn't get t and then a couple of years later started it from the beginning and loved it but comedy is subjective some people will never find it funny but I stand by the fact you can't just watch a random episode knowing none of the in Jokes and declare it crap
In your case you tried watching it and decided it wasn't for you and that's fair enough .
