Is it just me? I don't think it's aged well at all, I thought the finale was rubbish!

I enjoyed it.

I find Pam unbearable though. I think Mick should move on to one of those golf club ladies!

sonnybeaudelaire · 27/12/2024 13:13

The Gavin & Stacey role playing jarred with me too - I concluded it was there to imply that they are turning into (Gavin’s) parents with the passage of time - Charles and Camilla, anyone? - even though they may not have been aware of it themselves.

So many other good story lines and observations though!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 27/12/2024 13:17

It's just you. It was the finale we needed after being left hanging in 2019. It was pitched just right.

It's interesting how writing styles change so much over time, it makes me wonder are things being 'forced' to give the people what they want?

Some of the most mundane things from the earlier episodes just wouldn't be used now but at the time were soooo cleverly written and while maybe not laugh-out-loud funny it just made sense!

"Ohhh it was your John! Stepbrother John! You know he's been to Nepal three times?"

And then Pete comes in and repeats the same line about Nepal. I love these bits! Reminds me so much of my mum and dad when I visit them. Mum will tell a story about someone whilst dad is making drinks, he’ll join part way through and tell the story again.

I love Gavin and Stacey because of moments like this. Every family has their quirks. Mine also do the “Ello, Vera” thing.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 27/12/2024 13:27

There's a reason why sitcoms have a shelf life, despite fans begging for more, which is blatantly obvious when you watch a 'special' made years later.

In Gavin and Stacey in particular :

The characters look too old, of course they are, but it somehow doesn't 'feel' right.
It felt a little false and you can't help but think of the actors behind those characters and how they've changed over the years, JC in particular. All of this just to say for those reasons I just found it too hard to suspend my disbelief this time.

There were some lovely funny moments, I loved Gwen and Dave Coaches, brilliant.
I also loved the focus on the Mick/Smithy relationship which is something that's never really been put in the spotlight before. Larry Lamb's little monologue about how Smithy became like the son they never had was the single best thing in the episode, IMO.
I thought the writing was top notch, with a few exceptions :
Uncle Bryn - no.. He was always kind hearted and a little obnoxious with a very small but funny rebellious streak. In the finale they overdid it and lost a lot of what made him such a likeable and iconic character.
And finally, the two characters meant to be the focal point of the story now have nothing to do, it's totally the Smithy and Nessa show so let's give them a non-story about spicing up their marriage.
Ruth Jones is right - there's nowhere left to go now. It finished on a sweet note though.
(I wouldn't be averse to a 'Gewn and Dave' mini series though!)

WalterdelaMare · 27/12/2024 13:28

We really loved it, having hated the 2019 episode. I think it was the perfect finale.

NoCarbsForMe · 27/12/2024 13:35

Oh my Christ give over!
LOVED it I did.

Refusing to watch something yet still criticising it is immensely annoying behaviour.

My in laws had never watched it (how?!) then sat there boot faced.

They remind me of the people who come on to a MN thread that's already 823 posts in - clearly having only briefly skimmed the short, sketchy OP and not read any other posts - and then get huffy when people pull them up for repeating the same obvious thing that the first reply said and/or saying something that would now be very clearly highly inappropriate if they had bothered to see how the thread developed.

Eww, Bryan and Jason are Uncle/Nephew

Thanks, I can't believe I totally forgot that rather important fact!! I never overly got Jason, tbh; but I should have remembered that!

OonaStubbs · 27/12/2024 15:09

It was never very funny. I find James Corden to be extremely annoying.

I can never get the Gavin & Stacey hype - the trailers are bad enough, not funny and not my sort of thing. I must be old and curmudgeonly or something, because I refuse to watch it.
Glad so many others enjoyed it though, each to their own!

This is a bit like an Amazon review from someone that didn’t buy the product 😆

I think Bryn was always odd but well intentioned.

He lived his life through others. I think the creepy bits for the stag were done to show that he was still trying to cling on to how it was first time around when they were all young lads. He wasn't really part of it then and in a bid to join in went overboard with what he thought they would want.

The contrast was there with it being the younger characters who had changed.

He never coped well with change and Nessa and Neil leaving would affect a character like his.

I think people expect too much of these things. It was a good bit of writing.

The last Christmas special wasn't as popular but they had a lot more work to do with moving on the characters and explaining what happened. They showed how ridiculous it all was through Sonia's eyes. I thought that was quite clever. Originally the differences were between the Barry and Essex cultures but over the years they combined into one group and so the laughs needed to be at this rather than the opposite nature of it..

It's one of the few bits of telly I've really enjoyed. It was never laugh out loud and always had touching moments. They took the Only Fools and Horses approach to this. If it was all laughs no one would care for the characters or they are entirely one dimensional.

These are great observations.

Or that this amazingly-designed, great-priced piece of ground-breaking tech only gets 1 star, because the delivery person threw it over the fence and broke it!!

Or one star because ‘I bought it for my grandson and he hasn’t used it yet’

I loved Nessa talking about Hale and Pace.
Also, her crazy life stories and indeterminate age.
Those little touches make me laugh.

I think Pam and Mick are a believable couple; they must have been stunning on their wedding day.

If she were truly only 29, as she claims to be, she wouldn't have the faintest idea who Hale & Pace were Grin

That’s the joke.

Hdkatznahtw125sgh · 27/12/2024 16:26

I liked it, thought it was a nice ending. I think it was never going to be as funny as had to be PC. G&S were very cringy but they always have been, especially in scenes together. the 2019 one grew on me, as will this one but nothing will hit the same as the original seasons.

Hdkatznahtw125sgh · 27/12/2024 16:29

James cordon was very weak too in his acting

GhastlyGoodTaste · 27/12/2024 16:44

Gavin and Stacey have never, ever been the focal point of the story. That’s the primary joke. It’s always been about Smithy and Nessa.

UrbanFan · 27/12/2024 16:46

I thought that it was rubbish and so predictable.

x2boys · 27/12/2024 16:57

I like How they showed Gavin and Smithy,s friends to have, aged too ,Fingers who.was, always,a,bit of a,lad couldn't go paint balling because of gout because he had eaten a,cheese sandwich 😂

NoCarbsForMe · 27/12/2024 18:01

FGS it's not supposed to be serious, it's supposed be cringey and it was a great ending!

mollyfolk · 27/12/2024 21:12

It was like spending an evening catching up with dear old friends.

Loved all the nods to the past ("Doris used to get a stripper after church " Wink)

Loving all the observations on here too.

I thought the scene was them all dancing to mamma Mia was perfection - Byrn with the tie around his head. Every single line out of Nessa's mouth - her turn of phrase "I know more than anyone what kind of bag you're packing and it's exceptional"

It was sweet, funny and nostalgic.
