Is it just me? I don't think it's aged well at all, I thought the finale was rubbish!

Honestlyhonay · 28/12/2024 21:41

Gwen and Dave was one of the best bits!
I found the Sonia storyline a bit unbelievable plus why would they wait five years to finally get together? Didn’t stop me loving it all though!

Having an affair when married is a sh*tty thing to do. End of.

It's not end of, though, is it? Her personal life is none of our business. Who even knows if it's true? She's gone down in your estimation because a randomer on Mumsnet said she was involved in an affair?

Even if she was, who cares? None of us know her or the circumstances around it and i personally don't care.

TheaBrandt · 28/12/2024 21:50

The people who have never watched it then are surprised they don’t get the finale are in the same bracket as those that think Taylor Swift is crap because they only know the song shake it off. I find it weirdly annoying!

Amanduh · 28/12/2024 21:51

I’ve never particularly loved it, think it’s pretty boring, watched the finale and it was quite good. Always lots of funny one liners to be fair.

Thewishingchair123 · 28/12/2024 21:52

I loved it 😊
The stand-out bits for me :
>Nessa and Neil the baby’s goodbye scene - found this scene particularly emotional.
>Neil the baby’s singing and all the scenes during this. Beautifully done.
>The wedding party standing up one by one to show their opposition and in particularly the interaction between Mick and Smithy here. Somehow reminded me of Dead Poets Society, where one by one the pupils all stand up on their desks.
>The corn on the cob bit at the KFC drive-thru
>The photo bit at the very end also had me in tears.

>I also thought the soundtrack was excellent and how it was all shot was very clever.
>Countless moments in scenes which were so subtle but the script/acting had so much weight and emotion behind it .
A few bits jarred, nit picking -
>somehow Gwen and Dave Coaches didn’t seem right for me.
>A couple of script details like Rudi calling one of her kids Aldi felt too OTT for me personally.
>Agree with some previous posters too that Bryn seemed out of character in places - he was very grumpy and we didn’t get to see his kind side.

But on the whole I thought it was truly brilliant and a joy to watch. Suberb writing, acting and direction and for me a little bit of TV treasure, that I will probably treasure by rewatching dozens of times.

x2boys · 28/12/2024 21:56

I did wonder about Neil the baby did they use this as a platform. For him to preform?
He clearly has a lovely voice

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 28/12/2024 22:22

When Nessa was marrying Dave Coaches, she made such a point of saying that Gwen was like a mum to her. This time, nothing. Not like a mum anymore or just all fakery?

Dawn and Pete are attention-seeking and annoying. I don't know why they were given so much screen time this episode?

BlueFlowers5 · 28/12/2024 22:22

It was ok, but if you're Welsh it was innovative in the beginning portraying a small Welsh town.

Uncle Bryn, we've all had an uncle like that in tight not communities where things are not modernised yet.

At the time Nessa was marrying Dave she had (until very recently) been living full-time with Gwen, who had supported her through her pregnancy and with Neil the Baby when he was an actual baby. By the finale it's 17 years later and she's been living with Bryn all that time, she hasn't needed that day-to-day support in years. It's perfectly plausible they wouldn't be quite as close as they had previously been.

It is a shame that James Corden is such a twat in real life. Ruth Jones broke up a marriage too IIRC so she’s not any better. I love Smithy and Nessa though.

She broke it up on her own did she?

MelodyFinch · 28/12/2024 22:54

I thought it was harsh I switched off after 20 minutes. My DS whose opinion I respect says I am wrong and should try again. Do most of you agree?

FoxtonFoxton · 28/12/2024 22:58

Nobody ever chooses Gavin and Stacey as their favourite couple from Gavin and Stacey. They've never been the strongest actors and were very wooden in the finale. The role playing story was crap and so unconvincing. I'm glad I didn't turn off then, as after a weak start (hated the Pam and Mick buffet bit which was very forced) it did really improve and while not hilarious, it was decent and nostalgic. Much better than some rehashed shows for sure. Should definitely be the very end as I don't think they'd have any further to go and it would be ruined. I wouldn't say it's something I'd rewatch or a classic, but I'm glad I saw it. Not a patch on the 2008 one!

people who don’t realise how clever it is are probably not very clever themselves. Smithy hated Nessa on sight because she is overweight despite being overweight himself. There is so much in the show about people not having insight into themselves. The fact he tried to marry someone who was completely wrong for him is perfect for his character. Dawn and Pete are the ultimate example of what happens when you marry the wrong person so putting them back together again at the end was the perfect mirror. Smithy realising Nessa is perfect for him at the very end was the ultimate character journey for Smithy. Ruth Jones and James Corden got everything spot on.

Seriously? You think that because somebody has a different opinion on a tv show to you they’re a bit thick?

G&S is a fairly typical British sitcom, the first couple of series have some great observations about friendship/family/society but it doesn’t need a genius to pick up on them and if people don’t find it as funny as you did then it might just be as simple as that.

The over analysis that it was some sort of deep and complex observational comedy is slightly strange.

Atsocta · 28/12/2024 23:17

Really? Absolutely loved it .

It’s cleverly written. I fail to see why saying that is ‘slightly strange.’

That’s not quite what you implied above you said people who don’t realise it’s clever are not very clever.

I disagree that it is a particularly ‘clever’ comedy it has some good moments particularly in the original run. In my opinion this final episode was really not clever at all.

Totally fine for you to think it’s cleverly written as that is your opinion, to think that people who do not share the same views are less intelligent is slightly strange to me.

broney · 28/12/2024 23:43

watched it with my dd, who is a big fan. Far too hyped up for me, predictable, cliche-ed plotlines that we've seen in umpteen other "finales". Most of which you could see coming a mile off.

Bowies · 29/12/2024 00:52

I find the characters, how they react, things they say, funny more than the plot lines. Nessa’s character in particular, Ruth Jones is genius. Genuine!

What did she do, sit on it? Can't stand either of them.

Lolabear38 · 29/12/2024 05:09

I loved it. Everyone I know (whom I’ve spoken to about it - and it is a few to be fair having seen lots family and friends over the last couple of days) - also loved it.

Also I’m pretty bored of the whole predictable, British institution of bringing successful-people-down-hating of James Corden. He’s acted in some brilliant shows (History Boys being my favourite) hosted a successful and long running chat show in the US and written and acted in a successful and also long running sit-com, to name but a few. Who else has managed that? I haven’t. Ok he’s supposedly been rude in restaurants where he’s had bad service - he wouldn’t be the first one. The press and many of the public just love to jump on a bandwagon and vilify anyone who dares to achieve any modicum of success 🥱

To me, it was a perfect ending. I loved it and will be watching it again soon.

Noodles1234 · 29/12/2024 06:17

I loved it, but we started watching them from the beginning again and I can also see your point.

Why do you keep saying it’s ’slightly strange?’ That in itself is odd. Comedy is a particularly subjective thing and nowhere have I said that people who disagree with me are ‘thick.’ What I did say was if people can’t see how clever the writing is, they are probably not very clever themselves. I think that’s true. For some reason you have taken exception to this which is your problem, not mine. I feel like you will be like a dog with a bone and continue to come after me. Go for it because I couldn’t care less in all honesty.

Is that in reference to her weight?

HowamImiddleaged · 29/12/2024 07:36

Only got to watch it last night. Big fan of the whole show.

It was ok and I enjoyed it. It was made to tie things up I guess.

Loved Mick, he is such a strong character and father figure to Smithy. When he stood up at the wedding, that was my favourite bit.

Really wish Dave didn't call Gwen, Sugar T**s.

I was disappointed there wasn't a nicer tie up for Bryn. His character was different to the previous shows, he was quite mean and odd which was a shame.

Oh and I doubt very much that Ruth Jones broke up a marriage all by herself, what nonsense.

I got the distinct impression that he was very rude indeed, and that the service wasn't actually bad. He was a rich, famous man enjoying and exploiting his power over an ordinary, unknown person. I can't imagine him either trying that kind of behaviour on with Ruth, nor her tolerating it.

He's well-known for having been truly insufferable and arrogant over a long period in many, many ways - he's admitted that himself - although I gather that he's been trying to atone for it and mend his ways of late.

It doesn't detract from his brilliance as an actor and writer at all; but it's not like he just had a bit of an off day and was overtired: that is/was his norm. Let's hope it's something that he's now managed to put in the past.
