How can people eat this much at Christmas

Mokel · 26/12/2024 21:30

I had a large plate of my Christmas dinner with Christmas pudding then 5 cheese biscuits with cheese.

I was absolutely stuffed.

Yet hear people who have a large Xmas dinner then go or host a Christmas Day evening buffet. Wouldn’t be able to eat at all.

Think my appetite has reduced

Over the past few years, I've actually lost weight over Christmas rather than put it on! I was also that weirdo who after giving birth, was lighter than I had been before I got pregnant - three times!

This has happened to me. I think it's because it's more socially acceptable to eat chocolate over Christmas, and so I'm able to eat a reasonable amount of chocolate, whereas the rest of the year if I feel miserable and want to eat chocolate I'll be doing so in private, and end up eating a lot more, as I try to dispose of the evidence before I'm discovered.

I'm trying to encourage the idea of a long Christmas, lasting until Candlemas, to stretch this out.

Edit: I once spent some time with some polydactyl Maine Coon cars (polycoons). Wonderful cats they were.

We did it, but other than some skinny undereaters most of them were not slim. This was even worse in the workplace (mostly female).
I think some people eat very little in company but overeat in private.

Gosh yes i think your last sentence is SPOT ON

I'm thin as are many of my relatives. We all manage 3 larger than usual meals on Christmas Day. I don't really see what the issue is or why this thread has turned into one about weight. We've enjoyed it and will go back to average portions by tomorrow, just with a few extra chocolates still.

None of our family are overweight, DS (who ate 15 roast potatoes!) Is only just about into the healthy bmi /borderline underweight. We all ate way more than usual Christmas day, boxing day and will likely eat more chocolate than usual over the next week.

I had an ED for 7 years and even I can cope with the idea that about a week (out of a year) of more indulgent food is not going to be a deal breaker in terms of weight gain, or having an unhealthy relationship with food!

Poppasocks · 27/12/2024 10:30

FIVE cheese biscuits???

Goodness I couldn't eat 5. I'd have to split one with someone...

LucastaNoir · 27/12/2024 10:36

Flipping heck @Mokel that is a lot of food! There’s no way I could eat all that in one sitting - how do you manage it??

Take a look at all those exclamation marks before you call anyone else unhinged…

To be fair, it was funny! 🤭🤭

I scrolled back for ages trying to work out who had a 'racist slur' in their NN!

ETA: FFS don't go reading anything into mine! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

BitOutOfPractice · 27/12/2024 18:14

I think @BucketBouquet, that when you’ve made a bit of a twit of yourself, the best way to disentwitificate yourself is to either admit it, keep schtum or name change. Not double down.

Generally when you say something really stupid, its best to own it and say 'hands up, I didnt know what I was talking about'. Then you can be laughed with, and not laughed at.

Diva66 · 27/12/2024 19:11

I can’t eat huge meals following bowel cancer, I just eat what suits me and let others do their thing 😊

Minc · 27/12/2024 19:12

By Christmas night I felt like a python that had swallowed a whole horse.

fetchacloth · 27/12/2024 19:12

My appetite has reduced significantly since menopause and if going out for a meal, I would just have a main course and skip the starter and desert.
Prior to menopause I would easily have at least two courses, sometimes three, and think nothing of it.
Ironically, despite eating a lot less in recent years, I've had immense difficulty in keeping off weight, so it's just as well I stick to one course 🙄

Generally it’s best not to serve up this sort of smug response as if you’re somehow being clever.

The expression “double down” is so irritating.

Emanresu52 · 27/12/2024 19:39

That is a covert brag post if I ever saw one!

BitOutOfPractice · 27/12/2024 19:50

And there you go, @BucketBouquet proving my point. I’ll leave you to your grump.

I was shocked at my son yesterday. he had already eaten a christmas dinner at his GF's families house earlier in the day then came to us around 4,30 and ate another Christmas dinner, at least 3 different puddings then started raving about a loaf of bread he had bought from M&S and proceeded to eat his way through most of a small loaf of said bread interspersed with chocolates, more cold meat etc.

It's obvious. He's got hollow legs.

I'm too old now to eat a big Christmas dinner.I just spread it over 2 days.

A large plate you say? With pudding and cheese? No wonder you're full. I myself sniffed the turkey and was full. I imagine I'll be ready for a sniff of the leftovers around Saturday lunchtime.

chocolateybuttons · 27/12/2024 21:16

You sound disgustingly greedy OP.

I'm quite shocked at your gluttony.

Try a massive salad now and again for salvation.

It’s sage advice. You didn’t know what a Maine Coon cat was. Laugh it off.

A phrase containing “off” springs to mind for me too…

yipyipyop · 28/12/2024 00:43

I couldn't manage more than a parsnip and a pig in blanket. That's me stuffed until new year.

OhMyGollyGoshGosh · 28/12/2024 00:47

Oh good God! @BucketBouquet can you really honestly never laugh at yourself and admit you made a mistake?

I misread things all the time on MN, especially when I'm skimming threads - most of us do and we laugh and move on!

It's not a big deal but the way you're carrying on, it's like the end of the world.

Emanwenym · 28/12/2024 00:48

A whole pig in blanket and a whole parsnip. Have you no portion control.

I ate a mince pie by proxy today. DCat loves them.

DCat isn't a Maine Coon and didn't eat it all on one go.

I scrolled back for ages trying to work out who had a 'racist slur' in their NN!
me too!

You’re going way over the top. Of course I don’t think it’s the end of the world.
