How can people eat this much at Christmas

Mokel · 26/12/2024 21:30

I had a large plate of my Christmas dinner with Christmas pudding then 5 cheese biscuits with cheese.

I was absolutely stuffed.

Yet hear people who have a large Xmas dinner then go or host a Christmas Day evening buffet. Wouldn’t be able to eat at all.

Think my appetite has reduced

I've got a smallish appetite, and I'm baffled when people talk about things like breakfast or starters on Christmas day. to me, nibbly bits here and there, a moderately sized dinner, then picking at leftovers and cheese later, to me, feels like LOADS of food.

I know someone who ate four Christmas dinners in one day. I was astounded when I found out!

Mittens67 · 26/12/2024 22:46

Are you wanting a round of applause for being a dainty ladeeeeee with a dainty ladeeeeee’s appetite?
Yuck

You do lose appetite as you get older but not just the appetite as such (because most of us dont eat christmas food because they're hungry per se) but the ability to eat as much as you do when you're young, its not as comfortable, makes you tired.

I used to be able to pack it away but as I got older you just get blown out by much less even though activity levels didnt change (Ive since had a sleeve so not comparing to now as that wouldnt be accurate)

My OH really picks at things now compared to what he used to, hes cdertainly not less active or less muscular because he walks about 10 miles a day for his job and thats been consistent, but he simply cant contain the amount of food he used to

My OH eats every bit as much as ever he did, but I just can't! I don't know why there are so many mean posts here because I'm interested to hear other people's experiences. I knew a lot of shit goes down as you get older but losing my appetite to the extent I have, I didn't expect!

On the plus side, I'd been obese for years, and I now weigh more than 4 st less than I did at my very worst, and I have a good BMI now, but sometimes it's frustrating when there's lovely food on my plate, and I just can't eat it!!

My sides are actually splitting at this utterly original and totes hilarie 'joke.' 🙄

And 'please tell me you didn't have a FULL size tomato.' And 'I am sooo stuffed after my massive salad!' Ha ha ha ha ha! Hmm

Tired, old, and pathetic 'jokes.'

NEWSFLASH: Some people don't eat a lot, and guess what...? That's OK! Shock

So much projection going on, on this thread........

The tired old pathetic jokes wouldn’t come if people didn’t start threads judging the amount others eat.

NEWSFLASH: Some people do eat a lot, and guess what…? They don't need judgy threads criticising them either!

Squidinasantahat · 26/12/2024 22:47

are people genuinely baffled by the concept of eating breakfast on the same day they also eat lunch ?

IncessantNameChanger · 26/12/2024 22:49

I really wanted three meals yesterday for the full experience of my childhood. Just ate breakfast and a side plate of dinner tonight. Easy! I don't think I will feel hungry for a while. Its just one day

I'm impressed!

Weed I’m afraid.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

I dont know why people are sneering or mocking the OP, its a huge issue in aging (not saying OP is old, I am!) but its the reason its difficult to get adequate nutrition into elderly people sometimes, they would just rather have a few cups of tea and biscuit. As you get older and you lose the ability to eat as much, eating sometimes is hard work, its not worth the bother for them.

A proper nutritious meal that takes the body effort to digest, like good proteins and nutrition dense veg/pulses etc, takes effort to get down them. Its also why a lot of 'elderly meals' are a bit mushed, its not just becasue of teeth issues.

foxandbee · 26/12/2024 22:52

@mainecooncatonahottinroof my appetite has really shrunk since I hit 60. I used to be able to eat three courses, no problem. Now I can only manage one and maybe a half a starter or desert, but not always. Sadly I have not lost weight, in fact am about half a stone heavier, Not fair!

nomoretreats · 26/12/2024 22:54

Should have worn stretchy bottoms. Jeans have no give.

PurpleAxe · 26/12/2024 22:54

Ah Mumsnet.

I work out all year. Eat a diet that consists of high quality protein and a ridiculous amount for vegetables and fruit. I can talk most nutritionists under the table about macros and micronutrients and all of that jazz.

And from about 12pm on Christmas Eve until 2 January. ALL BETS ARE OFF. I don't do any exercise other than that caused by food preparation and socialising and have been known to eat only yorkies, gravy and champagne for an entire day.

I do the same on holidays as well. Some days I will spend a day scuba diving fueled entirely on cocopops in the morning followed by cocktails before bed. I am 47 now. I decided years ago I was done with giving a fuck all of the time.

So 80% of my life I take good care of my body and she then supports the crazed spin out my soul requires to relax. 😁

People start threads observing all sorts of things, peoples housing, jobs, cars, behaviour of all sorts, parenting, etc etc

Not sure any of those observations get quite the vitriol that a general discussion about eating gets.

Boredlass · 26/12/2024 22:55

I eat a lot because I know I will eat zero carbs after and lose it. I really enjoy the rosters and chocolate for a couple of days

captainPugwashh · 26/12/2024 22:57

Emanwenym · 26/12/2024 22:02

I had a big plate of salad on Christmas Day as a special treat. Normally I'd have had gruel.

🤣

BucketBouquet · 26/12/2024 22:57

I dont know why people are sneering or mocking the OP, its a huge issue in aging

Then why isn’t her thread title “Is it normal to eat less as you age?” Why is it “How on earth can people eat soooooo much foooood?!”?

Jk987 · 26/12/2024 22:59

How do you fit in Christmas pudding after a full plate of Christmas dinner?

CombatLingerie · 26/12/2024 23:00

@UndeniablyGenXmasOfAWomblingMerryType it isn’t fair is it? I am exactly the same! I am a fatty now on less food. I was once at a hotel tasting menu with many courses. Two ladies ( they were slim before I get accused of fatty bashing) were scoffing every course along with the wine flight. I just couldn’t get to the end of the menu and wasn’t drinking alcohol. When it was complete these ladies then ordered a Port and a cheese board each.
I was still feeling very delicate the next morning. I then watched these two ladies tucking into a full English breakfast each. I honestly think they must have had hollow legs.
These sort of threads always remind me of the old Les Dawson MIL joke. Wife: ‘my mother eats like a bird’. Son in law: ‘yes but the bird is a Vulture’.

Iloveyoubut · 26/12/2024 23:02

I wished for a performative under-eating thread for Christmas! I’m so happy right now!

I didnt say she was talking about aging, I was, because I am and its something I noticed some years ago and my OH has experienced, we went for a buffet with similarly aged friends and although all the food was lovely and laid out and we wanted to dive in, a lot of it will be wasted as we cant manage it anymore

I thought OP was simply asking how people fit it in. I didnt read the OP as saying 'why are they eating this much/shouldnt be eating this much'

And I was explaining that when you're younger, you can fit it in, its like there is no bottom or shut off valve, thats how it was for me anyway, you dont really feel full up so you can carry on, as you get older its very uncomfortable so even if you want it, you cant really eat it.

So again, I dont know why peopl eare sneering at the OP for asking that.

Yes, this - I didn't really expect it! My dad lived to be 81 and his appetite didn't really diminish - he always ate reasonably. My mum ate plenty until she was diagnosed with cancer in her early 60s.

I'm 61 and I've struggled to eat a lot for the last 4/5 years now. I eat enough, but I sometimes miss a big old feed!

For goodness sake, is this a joke? What does it matter how much anyone else eats? How is it going to affect your life? So your appetite has reduced…and????
