Caught ringworm from someone’s cat, should I post to Facebook

catphone · 24/12/2024 22:28

I’m not sure what I want from this.
There are cats that come and shit in my garden every morning before I can catch them. I sometimes see them in the evening and shoo them away.
I know it isn’t the time of year for gardening but a few weeks ago I moved some shrubs around as they looked better in another place and I was mindful to not touch any cat shit or go near it.
I have now developed ring worm and it’s spread everywhere. I am covered in it, it’s itchy and painful.
I was advised that it’s contracted by animals, I don’t share towels or anything like that and it’s the only way I could’ve caught it.
I’ve finally got cream for it just today but I have a weak immune system and skin conditions already so I don’t what luck I’ll have

As @nervousnellylikesjaffacakes and others have said, it sounds and looks like Pityriasis Rosea. I had it when I was at uni, the doctor said it's usually a one off event and I've never had it since, but did take a couple of months for it to go.

What part isn’t real?
I was never going to post to Facebook non-anonymously. And I wasn’t sure about doing it at all.
I’m just pissed off. And I’m having a moan.
I started the thread because I’m pissed off that I’ve realised I’ve caught a highly contagious infection and need to disinfect everything. Can’t I complain about that?
I’ve had it for weeks because I thought it was eczema at first. its even on my back now.
I’ll be trying an Antifungal body wash as well.

You can complain, of course.
But what do you want us to do?
You are convinced, despite every PP telling you differently, that this is from cat poo. Announcing this on Fb will not stop the cats relieving themselves in your garden.

Dodie66 · 25/12/2024 08:09

Bark doesn’t work. I put some round my garden and they still dig and mess in it
ive just bought fine black net and will put that over the garden and plants

OnyourbarksGSG · 25/12/2024 08:22

This is not how fungus sporelates, from cats crapping in your flower beds.

I grow mushrooms/fungus as a hobby. The spores are microscopic and invisible to the naked human eye. Sure, it’s possible that a cat has some on its coat but it’s also just as possible that the wind blew it into you or you touched a contaminated person/door handle/work surface. If you were to hold up an agar plate in your house/garden for 30 seconds and then culture it, you would partially have dozens of contaminants.

i also used to breed guinea pigs and ring worm is incredibly common with them, and skinny hairless pigs are especially susceptible to it as they have no hair to protect them. But the ring worm is actually often brought in on the hay and doesn’t lie dormant in the pig. But I’ve it’s in your environment it’s very very hard to eradicate and the scratching/skin shedding cycle means it’s spread easily.

This infection could

OnyourbarksGSG · 25/12/2024 08:23

This infection could happen to anybody.

Anywherebuthere · 25/12/2024 08:29

What will Facebook do about it?

FeegleFrenzy · 25/12/2024 08:33

i haven’t gone out and touched anything with my bare hands either.

what never?

you can’t catch ringworm from cat poo, especially when you haven’t touched the poo. If you haven’t been stroking the cats they are not the source of your fungal infection.

MrsHelenHuntingdon · 25/12/2024 08:33

Ringworm isn’t itchy or painful so it’s very unlikely to be that. It also goes away by itself after 3-4 weeks, treated or not.

I hope whatever it is clears up soon.

catphone · 24/12/2024 22:37

I hate cats!!!

That’s probably why they take a dump in your garden

FeegleFrenzy · 25/12/2024 08:37

I do agree though that cats shitting in your garden is not good. Friend of mine solved it by getting a cat scarer sonic thing which she’s pushed in her lawn. Emits a high pitched noise which adults can’t hear and keeps the cats away. Kids might be affected as well which in my mind would be a bonus but depends if you have kids.

zizza · 25/12/2024 08:40

More likely a reaction to the plants. I often get itchy and blotchy after gardening!

Ironfloor269 · 25/12/2024 09:05

Get back at them, OP. Go shit in their gardens. That’ll learn ‘em.

Barney16 · 25/12/2024 09:07

Cats in your garden is irritating. Don't put bark down, your garden will look and feel like a big cat litter tray. There are lots of plants that cats avoid so maybe more planting? And a water pistol, humane but effective. I don't know what your skin infection is but if you aren't happy go back to the doctor's and ask them to look at it again. Ringworm is very infectious and you could have contracted it from many places. It's unlikely to be the cats unless you were petting them which I take from your posts that you weren't doing.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 25/12/2024 09:41

@catphone the rash look like the below based on the pictures you have posted.

If so my dd who has various forms of eczema had thus when she was 2.5. She ended uo in hospital as she was so poorly with it. It isn't ringworm (although gp thought it was) and turned out to be a viral infection that she had had an allergic reaction to.

Do you have a fever. Even low grade?

Catching ringworm without actually touching an infected animal is exceptionally rare and tbh massively unlikely.

It is far more likely that the person who delivered your shopping had it and you picked it uo by touching the same items.

However frustrated you are about the cats in your garden you are being a bit ridiculous blaming them for this.

Thepeopleversuswork · 25/12/2024 10:02

This comes across as a bit unhinged. Even if it did transpire that cats had given you ringworm I am struggling to see what posting about it on Facebook would accomplish?

Cats can’t read or type (mercifully) so it would go a bit over their heads surely? Mine fail to follow instructions when shouted. What makes you think social media is the best channel for a non literate animal?

I did catch ringworm from my cat, he scratched me accidentally, bless him (I loved that cat, my favourite of many in my life) and the vet had just diagnosed him with ringworm and said that teen girls were the most likely to catch it - he was right!

Anyway, just wanted to post and say it isn't very nice and for me it took 3 lots of antibiotics to shift. Don't be backwards about going to the doctor again if the cream doesn't work.

They won’t care, they’ll just watch you from the shed and laugh, evil bastards that they are 😂

Antibiotics for a fungal infection?! That wouldn’t work unless the ringworm wounds were infected with a bacterial infection on top. I just had some anti fungal cream from the pharmacist, worked a treat.

Edited

That's what I thought at the time, maybe I'm misremembering and they weren't antibiotics but there were definitely 3 lots of tablets and it's didn't go until I finished the last course.

MzHz · 25/12/2024 10:36

Oh grow up and try adulting for a second.

literally nobody cares about your fungal infections, treat it and move on.

Might have got a secondary infection. I can’t remember mine being particularly itchy though. It was very pretty though and the ring keep growing, looked great under UV 😂

Mine were on my torso, five rings. If they'd only been positioned better, they would have looked very Olympic!

I never had tablets for it. Just cream.
