Caught ringworm from someone’s cat, should I post to Facebook

catphone · 24/12/2024 22:28

I’m not sure what I want from this.
There are cats that come and shit in my garden every morning before I can catch them. I sometimes see them in the evening and shoo them away.
I know it isn’t the time of year for gardening but a few weeks ago I moved some shrubs around as they looked better in another place and I was mindful to not touch any cat shit or go near it.
I have now developed ring worm and it’s spread everywhere. I am covered in it, it’s itchy and painful.
I was advised that it’s contracted by animals, I don’t share towels or anything like that and it’s the only way I could’ve caught it.
I’ve finally got cream for it just today but I have a weak immune system and skin conditions already so I don’t what luck I’ll have

This remind me of 'I caught crabs off the toilet seat'

Nchanged89 · 24/12/2024 23:23

Impetigo is itchy as fuck and very contagious. Can't blame the cats for that either.
Out of interest, what were you going to post on fb?

NestaArcheron · 24/12/2024 23:24

You can't catch a fungal infection from cat shit 🤣

Concretejungle1 · 24/12/2024 23:25

What part isn’t real?
I was never going to post to Facebook non-anonymously. And I wasn’t sure about doing it at all.
I’m just pissed off. And I’m having a moan.
I started the thread because I’m pissed off that I’ve realised I’ve caught a highly contagious infection and need to disinfect everything. Can’t I complain about that?
I’ve had it for weeks because I thought it was eczema at first. its even on my back now.
I’ll be trying an Antifungal body wash as well.

Op I’ve had ring worm from helping a stray cat ( not from it’s poop as it never went) from handling it for hour or two.
that does not look like ring worm.
also if you had this for a while you would all be infected if it was ringworm, as its really contagious. We all ended up with it.
ring worm looks like an actual rings on your skin, and it spreads to multiple places but it looks like you have little rings on you.
it was awful for me (though i do not regret helping it for a second).

I’m really surprised that I could’ve caught it from anyone or anything, yet haven’t had it before and hadn’t even heard of it before catching it. I didn’t know it was a thing.
so it just sits on the surface of anything ready to infect you?

Yes. Exactly that. I grew up in the countryside and had it frequently. A cow or horse gets it, they scratch themselves on a fence post, you then climb over said fence and it scratches your leg, you get ringworm.

I managed to get it on my tit once. No idea how that happened.

Solent123 · 24/12/2024 23:27

whynotwhatknot · 24/12/2024 23:27

i had two cats never caughht ringworm for 20 years

Wolfiefan · 24/12/2024 23:23

So what did the GP prescribe.

clotrimazole cream.I’ve bought the body wash myself.
Just now it’s on my chest, sides and back, and now my thighs. I was advised it could spread anywhere, even my scalp. There used to just be that big red ring now theres a number of the little red patches.

I dont think cats go on facebook

Made my day, thank you 🤣

I wondered about this too.

Chouette77 · 24/12/2024 23:32

I'm sorry you're not feline well, however ringworm isn't a catastrophe and you don't need a purrfesional to cure it. Anyway, fungal infections grow on you after a while so don't worry. Antihisstamines help.

Gillyflower99 · 24/12/2024 23:36

My "ringworn" turned out to be discoid eczema. i was sure it must be ringworm as i had been treating the kitten for it. The dermatologist took a skin scraping and assured me that it was eczema. I looked as if i had been attacked by an octopus - bright red rings from neck to ankles.

StarDolphins · 24/12/2024 23:38

I wouldn’t post this on FB no & I wouldn’t be telling people you’ve caught it from cats either as I’m pretty sure this isn’t true!

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 24/12/2024 23:39

I’ve had ring worm once because it spread throughout my workplace where we were all in close contact with each other. It really wasn’t a big deal? I didn’t disinfect anything or wash my sheets daily or whatever mad stuff you said you were going to do. I just got some cream off the GP and it went away quickly. It really wasn’t the big drama you are making it out to be.

Themaths · 24/12/2024 23:42

Don't fuck with Cats OP.
All the same i hope whatever skin issue you have clears up soon!

DaringlyPurple · 24/12/2024 23:42

I do like to snap on a pair of disposable rubber gloves before gardening. I don't like proper gardening gloves because soil always seems to work its way in and then you have to wash them. Light gloves are not ideal with rose bushes but they survive most other gardening. Not caught anything despite our garden being the Silk Road of the local cats. I did catch ringworm from a hedgehog as a child though.

DrFoxtrot · 24/12/2024 23:46

The description you've given could also be pityriasis rosea.

pinkdelight · 24/12/2024 23:48

How do you know you've not touched anyone with ringworm? It's not like everyone posts their fungal updates on Facebook so you can keep track, alas.

Endofyear · 24/12/2024 23:50

You're getting a lot of quite mean answers here OP but it is possible to catch ringworm from infected soil, although rare. To prevent the cats from pooing in your garden, I would try and cover any exposed soil with some jagged shingle or bark. Any bare soil is fair game to them. My MIL used to put orange/lemon peel in and around the flower beds, apparently they hate the smell.

catphone · 24/12/2024 22:37

I hate cats!!!

You probably caught it from a human. I have never {to date} caught ringworm from any animal.
Kids are far more likely to have spread the fungus to you.

Ringworm is more likely to affect:

Children
Seniors
People with weakened immune systems
People who play contact sports
People with minor skin injuries
People with diabetes or obesity

That much is obvious, and very sad, because cats are wonderful and you are the one who is missing out.

You did not catch ringworm from a cat.

I thought so. But they’re probably drunk/off their faces on sugar so I’ll let them off
I’ll find something to cover the soil as well. I’m sure I’ve got some landscape bark actually.
If it’s eczema that’ll be the 3rd or 4th type of eczema I’ve got.

I'm 61 and I've probably had cats since I was 1 or maybe younger and I have never had ringworm.

If I did, the last thing I'd be doing would be crowing about it on Facebook!!

catphone · 24/12/2024 22:40

I’m not sure I should post it to Facebook if I did it would be anonymous. I’m sick and tired of cats shitting in my garden everyday. And now I’ve got an infection. I’ve had it for weeks but it’s already gone everywhere. I’ve never had it before so I didn’t know what it was but I assumed it was eczema as I’ve got it severely. Now I need to have a bath everyday as no shower and change my bedsheets everyday for a month until it’s gone. As if I don’t have enough to do. There’s no other way I could’ve caught it. I don’t go to swimming pools. I fucking hate cats

Why on earth would you post anonymously on Facebook and more to the point, how would you do it, and what would you say?

You may hate cats but you can't blame them for everything that goes wrong in your life!

Make your garden unattractive for cats to shit in and bingo, problem solved. You could get your own cat and discover an inner love of cats, but I wouldn't recommend that for the sake of the poor cat.

I am allergic to athletes foot cream so when I treat athletes foot it spreads a rash that looks similar but more like pomphlox those tiny blister eczema. It was very confusing first time thst happened. Now I use tea tree oil not tea tree cream. Obviously you need to speak to doctor if not getting better. It does feel horrible having a rash spread all over psychologically and physiologically. Hope you get sorted soon x
