Our Waitrose is empty of anything decent already, it’s a town centre one. The out of town Tesco was fully stocked with everything earlier, not too busy and with loads of young helpful staff. We live in an area with lots of agricultural and servicemen, so they are very good at catering for people who work odd hours. Don’t think they had started discounting yet, they’re open until 7pm. Loads of lovely looking fresh lettuce etc. will go there for my last minute salad next year. No fresh bread anywhere though.

Youreabadbanana · 24/12/2024 15:34

I could possibly try again but I'm not sure where to try or if it'll be worth it

Woodythewonderpony · 24/12/2024 15:34

My DS works at M&S, their branch had already sold out of turkeys yesterday (couple of years ago he came home with a £70 turkey crown for free on Christmas Eve 😁). I’ve told him to come home with what he can and will make room for it!

HowDidThisHappenDinesh · 24/12/2024 15:35

On my way to Lidl now… annoyingly can’t go any later (they close at 7) but fingers are still crossed for some bargains

lifeonmars100 · 24/12/2024 15:37

Never done this, just wouldn't be able to cope but I will be checking back on this thread and envying everyone who gets a bargain. Good luck. I finished my food shopping on Sunday and have entered the "if we don't have it, it doesn't matter zone

JusteanBiscuits · 24/12/2024 15:37

I am now tempted to go and hit the local Waitrose when I finish work!

They might not let you in if you turn up 5-10 mins before closing.

10 minutes before closing time is not closed.

That doesn't mean they have to let you in, though. They want people through the tills and out of the door by six, not just coming in to start their shop.

It's on Twitter too. Amazing storytelling. Well worth a read.

It's such a good story!

MiamiWindMachine · 24/12/2024 15:38

I’ve never heard of a shop not letting people in ten minutes before closing.

RedToothBrush · 24/12/2024 15:38

Lamb joint. 50% off. Beef wellington 40% off (that Christmas dinner). Smoked salmon 50% off (I don't like salmon but it's breakfast for the rest of the house who could eat it by the kg). Steak 60% off (that's dinner).

Job done.

Supermarket was actually lighter on cheese than I'd like (I could die eating cheese) but can't complain!

I've been stopped 15 minutes before. It was a clothes shop though.

Good luck with the bargain hunting everyone!

Moonchildalltheway · 24/12/2024 15:41

Just been in to our city store. It closes at 4pm. Not a lot reduced in the store, I got what I needed plus a large pate terrine for £2, reduced from 12, best before the 29th.

fivebyfivebuffy · 24/12/2024 14:04

I need some milk and was going to have a look while I was out
My options are
Booths
M&S
Aldi

Can't decide! Booths and Aldi do too good to go bags so they might have all the good stuff in there...

I would so love to have a Booths near by!

PlopSofa · 24/12/2024 15:43

Our M&S was full to the brim of unbought whole brie cheeses stuffed into pastry cases earlier today that didn't seem to be going anywhere.

Great if you like cooked melted brie....

Jumperp · 24/12/2024 15:43

@Husbandrippedmeoff OP, my entry may be null and void as it was two christmases ago but I’d like to submit it for your consideration!

I went to Aldi 30 mins before closing and after the till they had a huge big crate of FREE TURKEYS!!!! and free veg. I took a turkey and put it straight in the freezer!

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/12/2024 15:45

Just got back from my local m&s and Sainsbury’s half an hour ago. Shelves generally full apart from bakery items. Nothing reduced.

craigth162 · 24/12/2024 15:45

B&m earlier was clearing the christmas stuff off shelves and had easter eggs out. Honestly I wish i was joking

zaxxon · 24/12/2024 15:46

We don't have any special cheese, or any turkey, salmon, premade starters, seafood, brandy butter, cranberry sauce, stuffing or premade puddings ... and I don't want any! So glad I don't have to go out and trawl round a supermarket this afternoon.

Hwi · 24/12/2024 15:47

Ours was semi-empty yesterday!

Mirabai · 24/12/2024 15:49

My sister got to M&S as soon as they opened this morning, had some last minute Xmas shopping to do. Picked up 2 pommes dauphinoise for £1.75 each.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 24/12/2024 14:13

There was a brilliant Reddit post a while ago about a lad who got a Christmas temp job at M&S. All the staff told him to hang on until closing on Xmas Eve and he would pick up real bargains. He waited and then ran round the store after closing and got the entire family Christmas dinner for about 5 quid.

I used to work at an M&S Simply Food store and we weren't allowed to buy any yellow sticker food!

We got specially selected bronze turkey crown with bacon & stuffing 30% off

Specially selected ham with glaze 30% off

Sherry trifle 50% off

Veg all 49c including a Melon & pineapple, carrots, potatoes, parsnips & sprouts

Also bought a specially selected cheese crate for 18e which I think is excellent value!

We bought champagne & very nice red wine

Lobster gratin starters 6e x 2 pots

Belgian chocolate melting balls 30% off

I'm delighted & about to put all away!

Despite everything we will soon have Christmas fridge of dreams!!

Nelliemellie · 24/12/2024 16:01

JaceLancs · 24/12/2024 16:04

We went to Booths at 3.30, got a huge beef joint £8 ish, same in pork for £5 ish, a whole large salmon for £10 ish, some chicken stir fry, pork chops and reduced GF thins and some cakes for DS, we only went for soft drinks and sesame oil - spent less than £40 and managed to get everything in the freezer - might have the salmon or the pork on New Year’s Day
