To think she could have sat in a normal chair?

I drove to see a friend today, about 100 miles away. I took my DD who is 9 months, she eats solids now and at home sits up with us in a highchair.

We specifically got invited for lunch that my friend made.

My friend has a DD who is 3.5, they have a Tripp trapp so I didn’t take a highchair with me as I thought she could use their highchair.

However when it came to eating, my friend insisted her DD sit in the Tripp trapp? This meant my DD had to sit in her car seat on the floor. I had to then feed her lunch on my lap. Her DD asked to sit on the normal chairs and my friend insisted she must sit in the highchair (it was on the highchair setting still, the same setting we use for DD).

AIBU to think this is quite rude? It made my lunch uncomfortable as DD hates her car seat and likes to sit up. I felt a bit bad for excluding her. Surely one time sitting at a dining chair wouldn’t hurt?

Your friend has a high chair at her house for her kid(s) to use. Why would you assume that your kiddo could use it instead of her own kid?
Thats some entitlement there. I think you were extremely rude to expect her to just hand over use to you.
You were the one “doing something different” for lunch, you should have made arrangements for your kiddo, it’s not your friends responsibility - her house isn’t a restaurant.

While I think 3.5 is too old to be in a highchair that is not relevant. The fact is you went to someone's home for lunch and expected to be able to kick their child out of their seat so that your child could use it? That's pretty entitled and unreasonable, your child your responsibility to make sure she has what she needs!

Chico Pocket Snack = Life Saver. We took ours EVERYWHERE. we used it in restaurants, on the beach, at friend's houses even at home. Our DS used it from 6mo to 3yrs old.

Makingchocolatecake · 23/12/2024 07:30

Weird. My daughter hasn't sat in one since about 18m.

Is this the wrap around scarf type thing? We have a tot seat at my parents which has been so useful!

Op it sounds awful and rude, is she a proper friend or an nct friend... It's sad but obviously don't bother again it sounds like immense hard work.

Something strange going on, with a child very able to sit at the table in a normal chair then 10 mins wrestling her into a trip?

Also prior asking to avoid my god we would be listing millions of things we usually have to hand and may need before any visit??

Madness.

Sounds horrid, brush it off and make sure you don't do this to a guests

At 18 months were they really able to sit nicely at the table in a normal chair? My nearly 4 year old still needs a booster or would be kneeling/wriggling.

CannotWaitForSummervibes · 23/12/2024 14:21

You were rude to assume your baby could use the Tripp trap. You should have brought your own or checked BEFORE travelling whether their child was still using the high chair.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/12/2024 14:25

I do think it was a bit odd to assume your friend’s child wouldn’t be using their own highchair/ booster.

We also had a clip on one for going to visit others.

She probably didn’t want to have to convert it back for your baby.

The only thing that’s weird is that her dd was asking to sit in a chair, but maybe she knew her dd wouldn’t sit nicely? Maybe she wanted to eat her own food in peace.

BuildbyNumbere · 23/12/2024 16:56

Just take a portable seat when you go places in future

Might have been more like 20m but yes sat nicely definitely before age 2. She eats all her meals at her own little table so maybe has a lot of practise.

Oh but if she has her own little table that's the right size for her. That's what I wasn't sure about. It's hard for children to sit nicely in a big dining chair at the big table however well behaved they are because it's not at the right height for them.

No, she has been sitting at big tables since then too. I meant she knows how to because she uses her little one a lot.

How TF did your 20 month old sit and eat in a normal chair, my 2.5 year old literally can’t see the table and needs a booster at least, is your child some sort of record breaking giant ?!!! My niece at Xmas dinner yesterday sat on a cushion so she could be high enough to cut and eat her food, and she is 8! But kids in my family are very petite!

Well she has, and does all the time! She is tall but not off the charts.

RubyOrca · 27/12/2024 07:00

YABU why would you assume she would take her child out of their regular set up for your kid? If she came to your place - would you remove your child so her child could use the chair?

you’ve got a few options - make do without special chairs, bring your own special chair, or don’t take baby with you.

It’s really none of your business why your friend has the specific set up she does for her kid. She might not have good reasons, but she also might. And it’s her kid, in her chair - so frankly that tops the priority list.

Geranium1984 · 27/12/2024 07:02

I have a portable highchair seat thing which clips on the side of the table.
I probably would have messaged her ahead of the meal to ask would you mind if we use your highchair (I actually would never think a 3.5yo would still be in a high chair). Even my 2yo sits on a normal dining chair now, she wants to be like everyone else!

I mean colour me impressed just at the physics of it, my daughter will be about 6 before she can literally see the food on the table to eat. Plus side is she is very cute and petite 🥰

Yeah she does , she has several that’s the point of my posts! The poster above me was saying her 20 month old doesn’t need a booster cushion or anything and can sit and eat a full meal on a normal dining chair with no issues, I was remarking that the child must be super tall as there’s no way my 2 year old could even reach to touch the plate of food without a booster !
