Spin off: who are the least talented famous singers?

Mick Jagger: just shouts tunelessly. He can’t sing at all.

Generally a lot of men in bands, like the Gallagher brothers, Alex Turner, and the singers in the Kinks.

Chris Martin - he’s just an insipid whiner. There was an advert with a woman with a good voice singing while driving a big lorry. I thought “that’s a nice song” and realised that it was actually Yellow by Coldplay. I never even realised it was a decent song because he just sounds so horrendous.

Generally women are held to a much higher vocal standard, and are only ever considered respectable artists if they are also good singers. Men who can’t sing get away with it. But ti balance it here are two women:

Geri Halliwell: Posh gets shit on for her bad singing but at least she had a pleasant enough tone. Geri is far worse - flat as a pancake.

Taylor Swift: such a weak voice. Sounds like mediocre karaoke.

Taylor Swift

Purplecatshopaholic · 15/12/2024 12:05

It’s hard to tell these days with all the tech wizardry employed to hide weak voices. Even singing ‘live’ is often not really live as us oldies know it, lol. It’s all about image, not the music. And I’m defo not a Swiftie, I just don’t get the hype there at all, but she’s an example of a great show/performance (according to the many, many people I know who inexplicably went to see her the other month).

This is true, BUT:
If you watch ' sounds of the sixties' and see tbe uniform bands in grey suits swaying in unison, you see that Mick Jaggers performances were actually groundbreaking. He moves and performs like he's a different species- shook things up so much.

Being a great artist isn't just about having a 'good' voice. Diana Ross had a less technically proficient and powerful voice than tbe other supremes. They were right to make her the lead singer, her distinctive reedy poppy voice set them apart and moved pop music on.

Taylor, Kylie, Oasis

Fireworknight · 15/12/2024 12:08

I find Chris Martin difficult to understand. Used to like Kylie, but think she’s got more nasally recently.

FizzyBisto · 15/12/2024 12:08

I've never really rated Kylie's voice - I think she's good but nothing special. Jason has a better voice, but he has had nothing like the same level of stratospheric pop success as she has.

StrawberryWater · 15/12/2024 12:09

The ladies in Girls Aloud.

I LOVE Girls Aloud, I think they're fine and their songs catchy. But vocally? Just listen to Jingle Bell Rock and you'll get what I mean. Yikes, find a note.

StrawberryWater · 15/12/2024 12:10

Also, yes, Mick Jagger. Eek. Shouty, mcshoutman.

Uricon2 · 15/12/2024 12:10

Katherine bloody Jenkins and Russell bloody Watson.

JimHalpertsWife · 15/12/2024 12:11

I'm not sure Taylor belongs on here. Her voice might not be Adele level, but her songwriting skills are ridiculously good, and her Eras tour showed she is basically an athlete.

JuneWhitfieldshandbag · 15/12/2024 12:11

Madonna!

lakesiders · 15/12/2024 12:12

Jess Glynne
Adele
Chris Rea

flapjackfairy · 15/12/2024 12:12

Surprise Surprise...Cilla Black !

I don't think Kylie, or Madonna have got amazing voices but they are a whole package about performance, or a sort star quality.
I saw Jason in concert when I was young and the performance was really flat, he didn't seem as showy (iyswim)
George Ezra has an amazing voice but I saw him live once and the rapport with the audience/pieces in between singing was really lacking.

PCMcGarry · 15/12/2024 12:13

This is why I like the Masked Singer. In the main only the best stay the course.

StrawberryWater · 15/12/2024 12:14

Lana Del Rey when she sings live.

Seen her 3 times live and she's bloody awful and needs to lay of the ciggies.

Diggetydawg · 15/12/2024 12:14

Katy Perry. I don't understand how she ever made it.

I think that could have something to do with the very obvious facelift/nose job surgery she's been on the recieving end of. She was on The One Show fairy recently and if it wasn't for her accent and the fact they kept saying her name I don't think I'd have recognised her.

I’m sorry what?
Two classically trained singers who are a million times more talented then the dross in the pop charts.
It’s a question of taste I suppose.

FuckItItsFine · 15/12/2024 12:16

Came on here to say Chris Martin. I hear his voice and it’s like a whiney three-year-old who doesn’t want to eat his veggies.

Also Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen.

Oh my quote didn’t show I was commenting on the person who doesn’t rate Kathryn Jenkins or Russell Watson.

Gall10 · 15/12/2024 12:16

Whitney Houston… she just shouts!
Hate that singer from James…just a nauseating pitch
Swift….just sounds the same whatever she sings

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 15/12/2024 12:17

For me it's Leona Lewis, who whispers or winges her way through songs or Alanis Morrisette who shouts through them. Neither is a good sound.

fruitpastille · 15/12/2024 12:17

Talent is more than how good a voice is. Song writing, musicianship, stage presence...

Appleandoranges · 15/12/2024 12:17

Not sure pop singers are famous for their singing ability. No one thinks Taylor or Madonna have amazing voices. Taylor writes her own music - that's what she's mostly famous for and also putting on amazing shows. And Madonna just had all round charisma and also think writes some of her own music not sure. They can both sing perfectly fine though. No one ever thought Kyle had a good voice. She has a very fun and likeable person and her voice is distinctive. Did the Beatles have good voices? Don't really know. Some pop singers have amazing distinctive voices like Adele.
