Spin off: who are the least talented famous singers?

Mick Jagger: just shouts tunelessly. He can’t sing at all.

Generally a lot of men in bands, like the Gallagher brothers, Alex Turner, and the singers in the Kinks.

Chris Martin - he’s just an insipid whiner. There was an advert with a woman with a good voice singing while driving a big lorry. I thought “that’s a nice song” and realised that it was actually Yellow by Coldplay. I never even realised it was a decent song because he just sounds so horrendous.

Generally women are held to a much higher vocal standard, and are only ever considered respectable artists if they are also good singers. Men who can’t sing get away with it. But ti balance it here are two women:

Geri Halliwell: Posh gets shit on for her bad singing but at least she had a pleasant enough tone. Geri is far worse - flat as a pancake.

Taylor Swift: such a weak voice. Sounds like mediocre karaoke.

It may be an acquired taste but both Adele and Christina Aguilera have naturally incredible voices. However, they sing with appalling techniques, which is why they are unreliable and struggle live.

Britney Britney Britney!
She hasn't a note in her head.

Madonna!

You can tell that she had singing lessons when she made Evita. Her voice definitely sounded better.

cingolimama · 15/12/2024 15:24

Madonna by a mile

Agree. MJ was an amazing singer. So is Taylor Swift. People are just taking the piss saying these 2 can't sing!

I think the choices of MJ and TS (along with others on this thread) are prime examples of people defining their opinions in opposition to what's popular. It makes them feel a bit superior because they've "seen through the con" that everyone else has fallen for😎🙄. A tendency that can also be an achingly tedious alternative to actually having a personality in some (not all). Fair enough to say those artists aren't your taste but to say they are bad singers is just a bit silly.

I dislike Florence Welch and Jessie J's vocals to the point that I will switch them off, but I have to acknowledge that isn't because they are objectively bad singers. I just dislike their voices.

TheTecknician · 15/12/2024 15:54

Robbie Williams. If ever one man got really lucky...

lonelywater · 15/12/2024 16:08

Florence Welch. Like Larry the lamb falling down a lift shaft. Stevie Nicks-just, no.

SeanMean · 15/12/2024 16:28

Rita Ora

I dislike warbling - just pick a note and commit to it.

😅

Many years ago there was a singer called Sonia. She wasn't really on my radar, I'd maybe heard her songs occasionally on the radio but had no opinion one way or the other. Then one day I saw her doing a live bit (in a boat IIRC) on the TV and she sang a bit. That's when I learned what magic a studio/sound recordist can do.

I heard an interview with (I think) Beverly Knight on the radio talking about a stage show she was in, she sounded lovely. I was looking forward to hearing her sing the song she was bigging up ... That's when I learned people tend not to sound as good as you're expecting when they're in the BBC piano room or whatever it's called.

I'm not overly keen on Lindsey Buckingham's voice. He can get a bit overexcited at times.

I've been listening to Billy Joel's Greatest Hits recently. There's a bit where he hits one bum note - it jars which just goes to show how good the rest is 😎

Not a fan of the ginger one then porker? 😆

SabreIsMyFave · 15/12/2024 16:52

@LaurenAction I am also not overly keen on Lindsey Buckingham's voice. Also think Stevie Nicks has an irritating voice. She's only in the band because she was Lindsey's girlfriend. And because she has always been very pretty. She would never have got into any band (as a lead singer) with her voice alone.

Unpopular opinion: Fleetwood Mac over overrated.

Nothing I said implies a conspiracy though 😁, although I would be in the market to hear any good theories.

I have been particularly enjoying the insane conspiracy theories about P Diddy and Jay Z killing off various singers to clear the way for Beyonce to become top dog and the idea that all singers thank her when getting any award at all because they are terrified they will be next😱. Brilliantly bonkers stuff 😆😉

ZiggyZowie · 15/12/2024 16:57

Bonnie Tyler

Awful

Ellmau · 15/12/2024 17:09

Most modern pop is autotuned to death because the singers can't sing.

The late Kris Kristofferson was an incredible writer but couldn't sing at all.

Some people can’t tell the difference between not personally liking someone’s voice, and outright not being able to sing.

However Taylor Swift is a bad example to make your point. She is objectively just not very good, vocally. No vibrato, no flexibility, no richness, and sounds unattractive when she tries to sustain a note.

I don’t disagree that she’s talented in other ways, and it’s not about ragging on her or anyone else just because they’re popular.

Oh she does have a very annoying singing voice doesn't she?! 😬

She is on a Christmas ad right now (M & S maybe?) And she's got her own shitty dire tune playing on it.

Would NEVER have been a singer if she hadn't got a famous mother.

Awful

I was just thinking of her. She absolutely murdered a couple of tunes when she performed at Hyde Park a few years ago at one of those Radio 2 in the Park days. Probably the worst vocals I have ever heard live. But in her case it's age.

Not quite true. She sang with an indie band in the 1990s then the DJ Spiller was looking for a female singer to sing on Groovejet, and he apparently scouted round and chose her specifically for her voice that's how she became famous - her unusual look helped too. Mum was icing on the cake of course.

saltysandysea · 15/12/2024 17:38

Taylor Swift and Madonna are known more for their song writing then voices. Britney Spears has an OK voice but is an all round pop package (image, dance etc). Same goes for Kylie - actually don't like her voice but can see she is a good pop singer. Same goes for Sabrina Carpenter.
