Spin off: who are the least talented famous singers?

WishinAndHopin · 15/12/2024 12:00

Mick Jagger: just shouts tunelessly. He can’t sing at all.

Generally a lot of men in bands, like the Gallagher brothers, Alex Turner, and the singers in the Kinks.

Chris Martin - he’s just an insipid whiner. There was an advert with a woman with a good voice singing while driving a big lorry. I thought “that’s a nice song” and realised that it was actually Yellow by Coldplay. I never even realised it was a decent song because he just sounds so horrendous.

Generally women are held to a much higher vocal standard, and are only ever considered respectable artists if they are also good singers. Men who can’t sing get away with it. But ti balance it here are two women:

Geri Halliwell: Posh gets shit on for her bad singing but at least she had a pleasant enough tone. Geri is far worse - flat as a pancake.

Taylor Swift: such a weak voice. Sounds like mediocre karaoke.

Jess Glynne and Cilla Black... strangled goats.

Mooetenchante · 20/12/2024 09:28

Hate to say it but Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins. Was listening to him on Spotify and after the main album comes the extra stuff , on which he is out of tune.

Ytcsghisn · 20/12/2024 09:54

Taylor Swift. Couldn’t name any of her songs. Or pick them out of a lineup. Not sure what’s so special about her.

WrongSortOfPoster · 20/12/2024 11:08

@Ytcsghisn , whatever it is, people like it, which is probably why she is considerably richer than you.

H from Steps as evidenced at the end of Sewing Bee last night.

I quite like H but every opportunity he mentions his kids and he seems to appear in everything

namechangetheworld · 20/12/2024 12:19

Robbie Williams. Highly unlikable and a very mediocre voice to boot. Always baffled me that he had such a lucrative solo career.

Nope - Alicia Keys

just had a listen again live on Youtube, not changed my opinion, she has a fecking awful voice

my poor ears🙄

Her voice sounds very damaged. She probably started off with a good voice but terrible technique.

TinyGingerCat · 20/12/2024 13:24

Dua Lipa - I'm always amazed she gets the plaudits she does. Horrible honking pitchy voice.

Cannot believe what a bitchy thread this is, started purely to slag off other people.

It could have been about building people up and who is the most talented/hardworking.

Enjoy your coal on Christmas morning.

😂😂Won’t anybody think of the pop stars!!

The people mentioned on here are not schoolchildren - they don’t need building up and encouraging!
They’re all a lot more successful than many of them deserve to be, and I’m sure couldn’t give a fuck about what’s written on this thread.

I was beginning to think it a bit strange how often he mentioned his kids.

Then start your own thread.

I’m sure poor little urchins like Taylor Swift can cope with a handful of anonymous mumsnetters not being fans.

It’ll be a PR promotional thing - he’s making his new public image being a dad so that he can be a professional Gay Dad. He’ll get spreads in parenting magazines, brand deals promoting children’s products on social media, etc.

It's not about them, it's abut your own personal integrity not to be spiteful.

Perhaps I should start my own thread, this one seems to be over.

notprincehamlet · 21/12/2024 08:24

Frank Sinatra - couldn't carry a tune if it had handles

Everlore · 21/12/2024 08:39

I couldn't disagree more strongly about Taylor Swift. I think she has a beautiful voice and is one of the most talented songwriters aroun as well as, in my opinion, being the greatest lyricist in pop music history. If you listen to her two 2020 indiefolk albums 'folklore' and 'evermore', which have much more stripped-down production you can really hear her vocal abilities at their best, she has real emotion and character in her voice which is more than most pop stars can claim.
I almost exclusively listen to female vocalists, I've just never really connected to music with male vocals ever since I was a kid. The Gallaghers are probably my least favourite, not surprising since Oasis are my most disliked band of all time, I also can't bear Rod Stewart who always sounds like he needs to clear his throat, Bob Dylan and his mumbling and Elton John whose affected faux-American vocals drive me mad!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 21/12/2024 08:39

Heather Small
Adèle
Axel Rose

I just dislike the way they sing.

I also don't understand the adulation for Taylor Swift - not for her voice or her songwriting. And no, it doesn't 'make me feel superior'. I have tried to like her (partly because I teach lots of Swifties), but just.... nope. I find her boring and can't tell one song from another.

MrsMariaReynolds · 21/12/2024 08:46

Jess Glynne, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, all members of Bananarama (!) and one that popped up on my playlist the other day, Dido.

CountTo10 · 15/12/2024 13:39

Yes! I call her the singing crow. I know she was friends with the Beatles but still can't understand how anyone could have given her a recording contract!

I am so pleased to finally find others who think this. I thought it was just me. Loved her as an all round TV personality, though.

Huh? What a response. How old are you, 12?

WrongSortOfPoster · 21/12/2024 11:41

@Ytcsghisn, her songs are varied, catchy, popular with different age groups, she writes them herself etc. Aged 12 I thought the BeeGees were awful. I now see they were extremely talented.

You are comparing Taylor Swift with the BeeGees?

You can be a diehard fan of someone other people find talentless. It is allowed. Without coming out with hilarity like this.

It's personal taste I suppose, I'd never dream of comparing Taylor Swift to The Bee Gees as I think she is supremely talented and masterfully straddles a range of genres, whereas I have always found The Bee Gees, as well as the songs they've written for others, incredibly insipid and samey.
