To have no idea what people do on Boxing Day?

For the first time, ever, I have no Boxing Day plans. Boxing Day was always seeing my grandparents (now they have died) and in the last 20 years, seeing my inlaws. Sadly they have both recently passed away.
I have two kids 8 and 12, and no idea what people do on Boxing Day! Any ideas gratefully received.

Rarely have plans.
stay at home, eat leftovers and mince pies, play games, watch films
go for a walk if the weather is allright

This is what we do except my dh is doing the dancing!

Morris dancing on Boxing Day?! I just don’t get Morris dancing… creeps me out!

Sheknowsaboutme · 14/12/2024 23:04

DH and the kids will watch football. I will go for a walk with my friend (who has. DH loving the football) for 3 hours and end up in a pub, then one DH will pick us up.

we do mountains so its a proper muddy walk and a nice fire at the end

Gekeos · 14/12/2024 23:11

We invite friends round and close family and have a buffet and a party, always fun.

lilkitten · 14/12/2024 23:27

For us it's always been seeing the other half of the family, but when I lived abroad and had very little family there (one cousin who I would spend Christmas Day with), Boxing Day for me was a solo day for going to the cinema and eating treats.

kennycat · 14/12/2024 23:37

Try to get some fresh air after being cooped up Christmas Day. Look forward to leftovers crammed in a baguette and marvel at all the detritus left under the dining table from Christmas day.
then hoover the dining room!!
and chivvy the overnight guests out of the door 🤪

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 15/12/2024 00:07

As little as possible!

Crispynoodle · 15/12/2024 00:26

I'm going to be on a national express coach from York to London for hours! Taking a Xmas leftovers picnic and downloading films for the ride. Usually we just veg out on the sofa!

CleverGreyDuck · 15/12/2024 00:52

We have like a second Christmas Day with close friends, consisting of going through leftovers, opening the toys the kids didn’t get a chance to look at on Xmas day and just having another fun and relaxed day

Maddy70 · 15/12/2024 04:17

We go to a footballmatch

What people do on BD imo fall into these categories

. The saddos that queue outside Next at 1am for the 5am opening then go around the other shops. Clearly these people have never worked in retail.
. The poor sods who have to work BD - a combination of retail workers who have to endure the saddos above, medical staff etc
. Slumming it in PJs, eat chocolate, watch films (think most MNs do this based on previous threads) and play games.
. Go round/have family and do a buffet
. If the weather is dry - a nice long walk somewhere.

I am the 3rd option but not in PJs as I don't like wearing PJs beyond breakfast.

MNTourist · 15/12/2024 08:15

we host and have family over on Christmas Day so Boxing Day just for us DH and DD(17)
and we usually drive to coast (about an hour away) and take dog for a walk on beach. Usually go for a cuppa to warm up and maybe fish and chips before heading home for tv or play cards with drink in hand.
I actually prefer to Christmas Day

VestaTilley · 15/12/2024 08:29

A long country walk followed by the best meal of the year - leftover cold meats, pork pie, pickles and chutneys, bubble and squeak and homemade chips done in the chip pan.

More parlour games, family time/visiting and festive TV or a film. I love Christmas and try and keep celebrating with special food and family time up to Epiphany.

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 15/12/2024 10:29

Lie in. Long brunch, walk with dog, snuggle with hot chocolate, mulled wine & watch films, play board games. Cold turkey, mash & pickles for dinner.

And there are so many chocolates to eat! 😋

Tagyoureit · 15/12/2024 10:31

Lazy morning, eat leftovers, walk in the park, more leftovers, watch a movie, maybe even a doze on the sofa.

Tagyoureit · 15/12/2024 10:33

Oh and chocolates! Xmas chocolates!

Do calories count on boxing day? 🤔🤣

landat · 15/12/2024 10:38

We have young kids and usually do a booked event of some kind, eg a theatre show or family disco or concert. We have Starlight Express booked this year.

LaDamaDeElche · 15/12/2024 11:16

Boxing Day has always been a chill out day - sleep in, watch movies, eat comfort food. Christmas is pretty exhausting, so it’s good to have a day to unwind and do very little.

Chocolatehamper · 15/12/2024 11:33

I plan on getting my own back this year - both kids have to work Boxing Day so DH and I will have a nice long lie in and leave them to it!! Ah the joys of impending retirement!!

AInightingale · 15/12/2024 13:23

I don't understand the pjs all day thing either. So many casual clothes now resemble pyjamas & are just as comfortable, so why would you want to sit about all day in the stuff you've slept in?

I think people put fresh ones on.

We sleep naked but have pyjamas just for lounging.

stargirl1701 · 15/12/2024 13:57

We have a cooked breakfast followed by a walk. Guests all head home and we change into PJs and eat leftovers. Watch a movie, play a board game, etc. Glorious!

linelgreen · 15/12/2024 19:49

We go away every year on Boxing Day so will be flying to Dubai on 26th to have a lovely relaxing 3 nights before our three "kids" plus one of their GF's join us on the 30th and we all move to Atlantis ready for NYE think I am looking forward to Lionel Ritchie as the star act more than they are!!!

CrispyDorothy · 20/12/2024 14:52

We have a lie in and a lazy morning, bubble and squeak for lunch and then go to the hockey.
