To have no idea what people do on Boxing Day?

For the first time, ever, I have no Boxing Day plans. Boxing Day was always seeing my grandparents (now they have died) and in the last 20 years, seeing my inlaws. Sadly they have both recently passed away.
I have two kids 8 and 12, and no idea what people do on Boxing Day! Any ideas gratefully received.

Zippedydodah · 13/12/2024 10:24

Head for a beach or a hilltop walk with the dog.
Take hotdogs in a flask, rolls, tomato soup, coffee etc and have a picnic.

Sit in pants. Eat Chocolate Orange. Repeat.

I had to re-read that!

I will go to my allotment and sow shallot seeds. It's the traditional day for getting onion seeds started so I extend the tradition.

Toooldforlonghair · 13/12/2024 10:25

It's my Mum's birthday. We go out for lunch to celebrate even if she's not with us as it's become part of our Christmas celebrations.

StrawberryWater · 13/12/2024 10:25

It's when we do our main Christmas meal with wider family as Christmas Day is just me, ds and dh.

SnowJamz · 13/12/2024 10:26

It’s my favourite day. Christmas Eve and Boxing Day we always keep just for our household.
Christmas Eve we play board games, watch films and the Santa tracker. Then Christmas Day itself is spent with other family. So Boxing Day is reserved for full relaxation. Get up whenever we want, leisurely breakfast and then kids have a bath and put on fresh pyjamas. Then we potter around, playing with new toys, sorting out the recycling etc. Just taking our time not having to rush.

All the other days before the kids go back to school we are either hosting people, at others houses or out at events. So I really appreciate the calm of Boxing Day.

Theyreallydid · 13/12/2024 10:28

As a child I used to be very confused aged about 5-9 why we didn’t do actual
boxing or anything to do with boxes 😂

Dulra · 13/12/2024 10:31

I am in Ireland it is called St Stephens day here. Judging by the comments all sound very similar. Lie in, clean house, long walk up mountains or beach and maybe a trip to the pub for a drink. Pubs in Ireland close on Christmas Day most only open St Stephen's day evening.

This year our local GAA club have parish against parish matches so will head up to watch middle aged adults (ladies and men) puff about a football pitch and then back to club bar

RedPony1 · 13/12/2024 10:32

Up early to do the horses, then home, get changed, then to DF's for lunch, home, changed again and back to the stables. Pretty much same as Christmas day

The worst part of any Christmas for me is playing games or watching films. luckily my family and DP's feel the same.

For those that go for a walk in the Countryside, who never normally go for a walk in the Countryside any other time of year, please wear outdoor footwear and don't take up the whole road then get pissy that a car is coming and you have to walk on the verge and get muddy feet to let them passed. This happens EVERY year on Christmas and Boxing day here 😁

RaspberryBeretxx · 13/12/2024 10:33

We meet up with extended family usually. Alternatively play with Christmas presents, watch movies, eat chocolate all day, drag ourselves out for some daylight after lunch etc...

PeachBlossom1234 · 13/12/2024 10:42

When I was younger I always went to my friends parents house for a house party then out into town, so it feels like I should be partying, now I'm older and have a daughter it's different.

This year we're having a quiet day in the house then going to a party night at a local hotel. I like the idea of a chill day, dog walk, then a bath and get glammed up for an evening with my DP and DD dancing the night away!

Justonemorecoffeeplease · 13/12/2024 10:55

Boxing Day is probably my favourite day over the holidays. Like many others it's time to enjoy gifts especially puzzles and books. We might have a quiz to fill out and a walk with the dog. As we'll be at my father in laws we'll get to go to the beach even if it's freezing which is lovely as we live nowhere near the sea usually. Meals are either leftovers, bubble and squeak, mince pies and of course chocolate.

No rushing around, can actually enjoy eating Christmas food as I'm usually fed up with smell by the time we serve it up on Christmas day.

Lie in. Countryside walk. Read new books etc. eat tasty food. My favourite day of the year as none of the pressure of Christmas day :)

This is me! Love that the stress of Christmas is over and that this is the furthest away from the next one that we will be. I relax, put on some comfy clothes, maybe go for a walk. Then come home, have a quick tidy round, select some tasty left overs and then settle in with one of my new books. Then maybe catch up a film. Appreciate that this is different when you have kids, think I would do a leisurely breakfast, then a walk to freshen us all up.Then back home for a day of games and snacking on left overs, chocolates and other Christmas treats. They will love the downtime after all the excitement

dootball · 13/12/2024 11:09

Play together with games / toys / puzzles in the morning, the off to local football for the afternoon, with a nice mug of Bovril at half time.

fivebyfivebuffy · 13/12/2024 11:13

@Wordau I'm the same, I hate walking
With a purpose? Like my car is at the garage and I need to get home, fine or I need to get to where I swim outdoors
Out for a walk no

I do exercise but spin classes, weights etc
I would rather clean the oven than go for a walk

Writerscompanion · 13/12/2024 11:16

My mum has always done a second Christmas dinner which is much easier as the meats, stuffing, sauces etc are already made and it just needs fresh potatoes and veg and hot gravy. It often tastes better than Christmas dinner as the flavours have intensified. Definitely a walk to burn off some of the stodge and get nicely cold to appreciate coming in the warm again. I love Boxing Day.

Shelby1981 · 13/12/2024 11:18

Pyjama day, play with new toys, do a jigsaw, watch tv...

Or walk to the pub & have a nice lunch & a few drinks

Theoldwoman · 13/12/2024 11:22

Boxing Day is my most favourite day.
Big clean up, all gifts away, tree packed up.
Eat leftovers.
Nap
Watch the cricket.

JaninaDuszejko · 13/12/2024 11:23

Boxing Day is the best day of the year. There's no expectation, the house is full of food and new things to enjoy. You can just relax and have a nice time with your family. Love it.

Openuniversity22 · 13/12/2024 11:27

I’m surprised there’s not more responses from people seeing family.

Every year we have to have a second (but slightly more relaxed) Boxing Day with the people we didn’t see Christmas Day. I.e Inlaws or my DB, wife and DC as they always go to wife’s mothers for Christmas Day.

I’d love just a chilled day doing nothing, sadly that’s the 27th for us.

My lovely late MIL was like that too. She always cooked a massive Christmas dinner. One year we (her children and their partners) saw that she had bought a smaller than usual Christmas turkey and expressed our relief that we should be able to manage most of it.

Then she showed us the identical bird she planned to cook the next day! 😂

My mother for some reason liked to cook turkey on New Year’s Day too. So you spent a week eating Christmas leftovers and just as it all finished and you felt you never wanted to see turkey again, we started all over again! And those turkeys were like flavoured dust.

You drive if it's more than 1/2 km? That's about a 5 minute walk? Do you do any exercise?

Walking is good for your physical health. I think that is a no brainer. Moderate exercise reduces your risk of numerous diseases.

It's really good for your mental health and treating anxiety. Especially walking in nature.

It's social, accessible and free. Most/many people can go for a walk once they're 4 or 5 years old up to their 80s. You can chat, you can explore nature, you can access spaces you can't get to by car - like a waterfall, a clifftop view, a forest.

Nah just couldn't be bothered, too much effort, and its pretty boring anyway. I get enough exercise walking around the house and office at work and doing housework.
Besides, where I am its too bloody hot and humid to walk much and you just end up getting sweaty and hot, car aircon is a lifesaver. And in the winter its too bloody cold so you don't stay out much if you can help it, just do what you have to and get back in the car/home.

Toots22 · 13/12/2024 11:29

It’s always a pyjama day for us - chilled out, movies on repeat, chocolates, leftovers / nibbles / party food - always perfect after the busyness of Christmas Day!

BlackChunkyBoots · 13/12/2024 11:29

When I was married to a Londoner we had bubble & squeak for lunch and played Monopoly. I hate bloody Monopoly. The rest of our dietary requirements were chocolate & things on crackers.

I'm with my parents this year. I don't know what we'll do yet.

outdooryone · 13/12/2024 11:31

Walk or a bike ride here. It is the law.
