To have no idea what people do on Boxing Day?

cantthinkofausername26 · 13/12/2024 07:27

For the first time, ever, I have no Boxing Day plans. Boxing Day was always seeing my grandparents (now they have died) and in the last 20 years, seeing my inlaws. Sadly they have both recently passed away.
I have two kids 8 and 12, and no idea what people do on Boxing Day! Any ideas gratefully received.

I mean, it’s not compulsory to do anything. What do you normally do on a day off OP?

Very helpful thank you

I'm in the US. Boxing Day is just a normal day here, so most people go to work.

That's sad as I know Americans love Christmas generally.

HarrietBond · 14/12/2024 08:26

I’ve spent a few Christmases in the States and my impression is that it’s less of a big deal all round than here. And it is VERY weird that everything just clicks straight back to normal on Boxing Day.

Partly it seemed to me that it’s only a month after Thanksgiving, which is a big turkey meal, family gathering round, and of course always on a Thursday so much more reliably a long weekend for a day’s leave. We have a different set up re holidays and nothing else big in the run up.

A very easy day in our house. Sleep in, late breakfast ( usually a fry) , watch TV. DH cooks the dinner, leftover turkey and ham but with fresh potatoes and vegetables. Play board games with the teenagers, watch a movie and eat chocolate and crisps.

CrackersAndMarmite · 14/12/2024 08:32

Long walk and a pub lunch!

Edited

The films have lied to me! 😆
Very interesting thanks, and so true about them having Thanksgiving

@Disturbia81 I was similarly shocked when I found out my Canadian colleague never had half terms and they just go right through the term with more long weekends peppered through Nd longer summer holidays.

I naively thought all countries had similar regular breaks no idea why guess I'd never thought about it much and just assumed as we are culturally similar they would

Wow I can't imagine not having half terms, I think kids need it.
And yeah I was shocked about their maternity leave. It seems life over there is work work work and then theres the healthcare, I always thought they had better lives than us but it sounds more intense.

Walk or a bike ride here. It is the law.

Are you in Amsterdam, @outdooryone ?

Scotland. I've just grown up with, and continue as an adult, to always do a bunch of activity over Christmas. And boxing day is a must ...

Fluffmum · 14/12/2024 18:10

Just relax and chill

Ashwapanda · 14/12/2024 18:16

We usually eat picky food and as we're by the coast, my DH and DCs do the Boxing Day Dip with friends (I hold the towels)

Roam the house in your pyjamas eating inappropriate meals and lying around?

Perfect!

Lemonadeand · 14/12/2024 19:40

Normally something sporty: local charity fun run, local rugby match (uni returners vs stayers etc) or double header at Twickenham.

aSpanielintheworks · 13/12/2024 11:41

We're going to the Theatre.
Followed by a Carvery dinner at the pub.
We only have our adult children all together under one roof for a couple of days so we are all going, I'm really looking forwards to it.

27th is always theatre day for us 🙂

Middleagedspreadisreal · 14/12/2024 19:44

Football match.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/12/2024 19:45

Boxing Day is the day of the long walk, isn’t it?

UndertheCedartree · 14/12/2024 19:46

We have a lie in. The DC have a few more presents as I spread them out. We have a big buffet (family coming for that this year.) Then go for a walk. Just a day to relax.

MrsR87 · 14/12/2024 20:04

We try to have a lie in and much as our children will allow us (4 and 2). We then spend the morning playing with new toys, going for a walk etc. In the afternoon, the youngest has a nap and so the eldest will have some down time. He’s asked for the super Mario DVD for Christmas so we may watch that this year. Then at tea time we use our leftover turkey, stuffing and pigs on blankets to make Boxing Day pizzas together and we cook them outside in the pizza oven - it’s great fun! 😍

SpiritOfEcstasy · 14/12/2024 21:44

A lazy morning, pancakes & bacon for brunch. We live by the sea so depending on the tide a beach sauna & a swim in the ocean. If not a dip - a nice walk. Christmas leftovers for dinner & a Christmas film at night 🎄

Same as any weekend Sunday.

Housework!

🥱

PetuniaT · 14/12/2024 21:59

In our household it's traditional, on Boxing Day, to reverse roles and we look after the servants, maids and butler while they live it up.

coronafiona · 14/12/2024 22:07

Bubble and squeak, walk, pub, film and cheese in front of the fire

Suzuki76 · 14/12/2024 22:39

When it was just me and DH we'd do snacks, pyjamas and films all day but now we have DS6 we try and get out for a walk. We also always always have the three fish roast from Lidl with the leftover veggies! This year we'll be packing to go and spend 27th-30th with family.
