To have no idea what people do on Boxing Day?

cantthinkofausername26 · 13/12/2024 07:27

For the first time, ever, I have no Boxing Day plans. Boxing Day was always seeing my grandparents (now they have died) and in the last 20 years, seeing my inlaws. Sadly they have both recently passed away.
I have two kids 8 and 12, and no idea what people do on Boxing Day! Any ideas gratefully received.

We sleep in, eat leftover turkey and trimmings for lunch, spend time looking a Xmas gifts/putting stuff together or whatnot. All 5 of us go for a walk in the afternoon with the dog. Then more of the same at home, feet up and heating on.

I love Boxing Day, just a total decompress of the mental previous few weeks.

Yes!! I love the festive period but find Christmas Day itself too much! I prefer the more relaxed downtime between Christmas and new year.

We're going to the Theatre.
Followed by a Carvery dinner at the pub.
We only have our adult children all together under one roof for a couple of days so we are all going, I'm really looking forwards to it.

Rainbow1901 · 13/12/2024 11:42

As little as possible - look over Xmas Gifts and find homes for them like smellies to bathroom etc. Eat whatever we fancy - leftovers or cheese and crackers. Watch the TV and chill. Fill in my new diary with family birthdays and other events.
This year we have DSS staying with us from 22nd to 31st so could have GCs and other siblings dropping in but not even planning food - if they turn up I'll get stuff out to eat. One year they all planned to turn up at ours so prepared a buffet and no-one turned up cos they were all hungover!! Not doing that again!! I'll happily do ad hoc if needed.
Years ago, Boxing Day was always another opportunity to see family and have a get together to play games but DH and his family don't do games. Boring!!!

Oh wow thank you for all the replies and lovely suggestions. I love the idea of a muddy dog walk and back home for Christmas food. I hope every one thoroughly enjoys their day. I'll be reading through and noting down all your suggestions. Thank you again

That's good organisation, I expect everything ticketed will be sold out by now

I’m surprised there’s not more responses from people seeing family.

Every year we have to have a second (but slightly more relaxed) Boxing Day with the people we didn’t see Christmas Day. I.e Inlaws or my DB, wife and DC as they always go to wife’s mothers for Christmas Day.

I’d love just a chilled day doing nothing, sadly that’s the 27th for us.

I would love to have a 2nd Christmas Day with family but unfortunately between us we hardly have any family.

As a child I used to be very confused aged about 5-9 why we didn’t do actual
boxing or anything to do with boxes 😂

Same here!! I thought it was to do with boxing, the sport, for years!

Just chill usually, DC play with their new stuff, usually a walk in the afternoon and a family board game.
Usually don't eat proper food, just Christmas "picky bits" and Christmas Day leftovers

gingercat02 · 13/12/2024 16:46

Lie in and relaxed morning. DH and DS will be at the football in the afternoon. I'm making the hated on MN picky tea, and my mum will come over at some point. Food wine and a bit of Christmas tv.

WetBandits · 13/12/2024 16:48

Start the day with bubble and squeak.

Out for a walk, then back home to watch yet more festive films.

Lots of cheese and crackers. Bedtime.

CloudywMeatballs · 13/12/2024 16:50

I'm in the US. Boxing Day is just a normal day here, so most people go to work.

namechangeGOT · 13/12/2024 16:52

Boxing Day is the start of Lego building month in our house! We build at the Kitchen table while watching all the films that are on, eating chocolate, crisps and sweets! I prefer it to Christmas Day!

Then at night time I have another good look at all my pressies and use every toiletry/beauty product I will get!

Orangelight23 · 13/12/2024 17:00

Basically a second Christmas day with whichever side of the family we didn't spend actual Christmas day with

God that's depressing

sprigatito · 13/12/2024 17:08

Fry up for breakfast, games of various kinds, then friends come for a big evening buffet and more games. Drunken charades, poker, board games and DH trying to beat the adult dc at MarioKart. I love Boxing Day.

PuppyMonkey · 13/12/2024 17:12

I mean, it’s not compulsory to do anything. What do you normally do on a day off OP?

TammyBundleballs · 13/12/2024 17:13

Football or horse racing. Have done one or the other pretty much every Boxing Day for decades.

Jagoda · 13/12/2024 17:20

Lie in, long dog walk, brunch, watch shit tv, dog walk, leftovers, shit tv and bed.

Bloody marvellous.

@Openuniversity22 we host everyone so we see everybody together. Both sets of parents, grandparents, siblings & nieces and nephews. It’s lovely but it’s busy!

Manypaws · 13/12/2024 17:38

Lie about and stuff our faces

Butteredtoast55 · 13/12/2024 18:16

We always host a big family buffet/day of grazing and games on Boxing Day. Occasionally we have gone to the cinema (my Mum and I would take the children whilst the others washed up and snoozed/watched sport).
But I have to say that 2020 was lovely when it was just five of us and so relaxed and peaceful!

itsjustbiology · 13/12/2024 18:48

We pack a picnic and flasks and head out to the beach..real fresh air!

Cantstopthenoise · 13/12/2024 18:59

When my Grandma was alive, we always had a family get together on Boxing Day with a buffet tea at either my Grandma’s, one of my Aunty’s houses or my Mum’s from when I was little until I was bringing my ex and my first daughter, my Grandma passed away a year before I had my second child. Nowadays, we have a day at home after being at my Mum’s the day before and either people come to see us or we go for a walk, one year we went to the local playground so the girls could get some fresh air and wear their new coats their Granny got them!

Oh wow do Christmas lasts one day? Depending on your job in the uk we drag it out all week!
