I’ve read some things in mine and sort of sense this might be the case but not 100% sure

Also is there a class issue around Fray Bentos pies ?

I love those !

To Fray Benton Pies, Findus Crispy Pancakes and Vesta Chow Mein...

I see you and raise you... Brains Faggotts!

OMG I love a tin of faggots!

Frozen peas are ok if you’re middle class, surely?

Heavens, I pick mine fresh every day.
Tut tut.

ComtesseDeSpair · 08/12/2024 12:33

We didn’t eat convenience food growing up so I first tried Findus pancakes and Fray Bentos pies as a student out of curiosity. That was in 2008 and they were both pretty claggy and tasteless and can’t imagine they’ve improved since. So I guess it’s an income issue rather than a class one: people with less money are more likely to eat cheap food than people with the means to buy and prepare fresh food, because I can’t imagine anyone would choose a shelf-stable processed tinned pie over a nice pie with tasty ingredients if they could afford it.

Peridot1 · 08/12/2024 12:33

I was brought up on Findus Crispy Pancakes. My mum would make her own chips though!

Never a Fray Bentos pie though.

My mum hated cooking so embraced convenience foods with enthusiasm. Fish fingers, frozen breaded fish, crispy pancakes. But usually made her own chips. We had chips a lot.

Chicken supreme? I think that might have been what we called cat meat pie.

We used to call it chicken sick. Apologies to all those hard working school cooks.

I’ve also never heard of these two products or seen them. I can’t understand why pancake mix is sold- is it literally egg/flour/milk mixed together already? Seems like a lot of faff to me

I always buy the pancake mix - makes lovely pancakes and flour isn’t something I buy.

The only time the university educate middle classes should eat ‘pizza’ is if they’re in holiday in Tuscany and go to one of these authentic artisan eateries where they can be served homemade ‘pizza’ exactly as the Italian housewives traditionally made it while looking out on a vineyard, a glass of white wine in hand

they’re absolutely NOT allowed to eat this foodstuff in the UK and CERTAINLY not a ready made one from a supermarket

has difficulty typing ready made and supermarket

I make my own. Is that allowed?
I'm in my early 50s and have never had a Findus crispy pancake or a Fray Bentos pie! Pies definitely don't belong in tims imo.

ladymalfoy45 · 08/12/2024 12:35

Toast Toppers.
Ketchips.

Dithercats · 08/12/2024 12:35

Ooh grew up on both.
Would never feed it to my kids 😵‍💫

I have some in my freezer, have it with Smash and frozen peas

Namechangeobviously2024 · 08/12/2024 12:16

This is completely true. My parents were dentists and I have never had a crispy pancake OR a Fray Bentos pie. I'm 52.

Am I missing out?

Yes! I had two crispy pancakes yesterday, the minced beef ones and they were goooood.

Sia8899 · 08/12/2024 12:38

Never heard of a Findus but my middle class dad would have Fray Bentos pies as a treat when he was feeling lazy. Personally I don’t trust pastry in a can

spanieleyes · 08/12/2024 12:39

We were very lower class, we didn't get Findus crispy pancakes but generic - no idea what is on the inside- ones from the bulk freezer stall in the local market. And they never were crispy anyway, soggy and flaccid was a better description. But they were much cheaper too!

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 08/12/2024 12:39

Fray Bentos pies

But the bottom is always so soggy.

eatreadsleeprepeat · 08/12/2024 12:39

TheShellBeach · 08/12/2024 12:17

No, no.
They only eat the Haddock fish fingers.

And not "own brand".
😂

Think own brand may just be acceptable if it is Waitrose?
Which to be fair make yummy sandwiches😂

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 08/12/2024 12:41

Do they still make crispy pancakes?! I’ve not seen them anywhere in years.

I'm from a single parent, working class background and we used to beg our Dad to buy us crispy pancakes for a treat 🤣 we loved them! Occasionally he would submit but generally he cooked properly from scratch.

I’ve never tried a Frey Bentos - they don’t appeal to me at all.

StrawberrySquash · 08/12/2024 12:41

Doggymummar · 08/12/2024 12:17

I wouldn't think so. They are delicious and I ate them as a child. My friend who is minor danish royalty ( old money but no money now) loves them too.

Ah yes, but properly posh people love to eat that stuff so they can tell the rest of us how relatable they are. 😉

I'd be prepared to bet that the buying profile skews less affluent for them, but my childhood friend liked them and her mum is a GP.

AllTheChaos · 08/12/2024 12:41

I’m so common my mum actually used to work in the Vesta factory before she became a nurse! Never had any of those things growing up, but only because we were poor so couldn’t afford them. My posh but skint lovely dad used to love a Frey Bentos pie as a treat though!

GivingitToGod · 08/12/2024 12:41

Is this for real?

Thepeopleversuswork · 08/12/2024 12:42

Hmmm

My mum was a card-carrying member of the Waitrose class: wouldn't have oven chips over the threshold and would have fainted at the sight of a Mushy Pea but we had Findus Crispy Pancakes. She would have drawn the line at a Fray Bentos pie though. There do need to be standards 😀

SockFluffInTheBath · 08/12/2024 12:42

TheShellBeach · 08/12/2024 12:21

Any thoughts on Vesta beef curry?

I remember seeing those in the shop when I was little. They kept them by the till because they were expensive and prime for pinching. Wondering now if I grew up in some sub- underclass 😅

BMW6 · 08/12/2024 12:42

Well I'm as oik as they come but wouldn't touch either product with a bargepole!

Just nasty ultra processed shite
