XL bully shot

Local XL bully shot today. The owner is saying on social media that the dog was harmless but I've seen it go for a a small child before. Why are these dogs 'harmless" until they injure or kill

@ScorpioRising83 When I was a kid a relative had a truly terrifying collie. The postman refused to deliver. It was absolutely vicious. It never tried to round anything up, it was after blood.
You can't judge an animal's aggression by breed only.
Any dog that is “after blood” should be pts, which includes dogs like that collie and pretty much all xl bullies. one lives near me and the owners do muzzle it when they walk it but if it sees a human in the street, even in the distance, it stands stock still and stares you down, growling softly , very aggressive body language. Dread to think what the horrible thing would do if it ever got loose without its muzzle.

@ScorpioRising83 time & time again these xl bullys are fatally attacking people all over the country. These dogs are extremely dangerous.

The news is reporting all bully attacks. It's not reporting all dog attacks of other breeds.

Because there is massive hysteria over this breed and all other dangerous dogs are ignored.

News want to sell news. It jumps on popular tropes.

StrawberryDream24 · 07/12/2024 21:50

News articles are only evidence of what the news wants to report. There's lots it doesn't report.

The police and some other agencies record deaths and serious injuries from dog attacks. It's generally the same few breeds.

ACynicalDad · 07/12/2024 21:51

Dibbydoos · 07/12/2024 20:12

How can you possibly think it's a dogs breed? It's a human problem @ACynicalDad The owners can't train them or train them inappropriately because they're AHs. Many XL bullies are great family dogs because their owners have trained them!

Really fed up it's an issue about a dog when it's their fg owners that should be jailed and banned from owning any pets.

@louisbalfournice I hadn't picked up the news, it's sad but I doubt the dog could be retrained to stop attacking, which it's most likely done because it was triggered by fear or anxiety. The owner who's claiming it was harmless is an AH and should be prosecuted.

The risks they pose to society’s heavily outweigh the benefits. Get a staffie or something. I know that my dog could never overpower me/my kids or do me/us serious harm if it went rogue. No XL Bully owner can say that is the case.

So many people coming for the dog but what about the OWNER?! Dogs aren't born bad, they are raised that way. There will be certain traits in dogs that lend them to specific jobs and make them unsuitable for certain homes (a working collie stuck in a flat that doesn't get walked etc). But that dog biting someone is down to the owner not training them and instilling bad behaviour. Should we also shoot the owner before he buys another dog, doesn't train it and let's it turn dangerous?

But XLs are specifically bred for their aggressiveness not for any redeeming features or characteristics. And they are bred irresponsibly, adding to the danger because they are addled in the head. Even the most responsible of owners would be taking a huge risk having them in their home

StrawberryDream24 · 07/12/2024 21:51

Good to see you're acknowledging that XL bullies are a dangerous breed.

And they're not ignored.

The ones responsible for the most attacks have been banned.

Both.

News articles are only evidence of what the news wants to report. There's lots it doesn't report.

Evidence is science, peer reviewed studies ect

In-breeding. Breeding known aggressive dogs. Looking at statistics. Anyway - not interested in prolonging the discussion. It is painful to try to fathom how someone can be so blinded or stupid. Do your own research.

What does that mean?

Sadly that's not as clever as you think it is.

I was referring to XL bullies who have been reported to attack humans in the news, not all XL bullies.

I have and I haven't found any solid evidence beyond news reports that they are dangerous. Presumably the government agree because they haven't banned them.

Some posters sounded very knowledgeable about this, I wondered if they actually were.

Generally, when people shout, get nasty and insulting and make hysterical sweeping statements, there isn't any evidence for what they say, even though they feel strongly about it.

Clearly I've upset a few people who are now spending their Friday evening reporting my comments. Possibly in a co-ordinated fashion. I won't report the nasty comments directed at me, because I prefer to let them stand, that way readers can see how unreasonable team 'kill all the XL bullies' are.

Humans are generally more vicious than dogs of any breed.

Wow that was an epic edit.

You really added value 😁

Good to know that the police took swift & appropriate action against the attacking animal.

I disagree, it looks like a sweet pupster, it has lovely colouring and it is absolutely NOT its fault it has been bred the way it has and has no choice in the way it acts due to its breeding. HUMANS are to blame as to why it is wired to react so badly.

Having said that, I don't think this breed should exist and I sadly do think they should all be euthanised because they are very unpredictable and are so large that they can kill without thought, even if an individual seems lovely.

Not kill, but injure. Could do more harm to a kid. Showing much aggression. I've met more terriers I believed would attack than bullys. Probably because nobody bothers to train small dogs.

Not to say I've not met some bullys who I was scared would attack, they belonged to roadmen who eventually got nicked and the dogs removed. They all knew each other and one bred his bully. They trained them to attack in their defence and to hunt wildlife.

I don't think it's possible to breed a dog to be aggressive, just as you don't breed a dog to herd sheep or sniff out cocaine or lead blind people. You can breed them to be trainable for these things, but the way they're handled is more important.

Really???
You've never owned a collie that tries to herd cars or kids as it's so hardwired into the system then.
Or noticed how virtually every labrador wants to fetch stuff??
Or how spaniels spend so much time with their noses to the floor???
It's genetics

Mrsbloggz · 07/12/2024 22:07

I'm sure we'd all like to say a big THANK YOU to the police marksman who dispatched the animal!
👏👏👏

Gymnopedie · 07/12/2024 22:08

A bully attack doesn't always mean death.

Oh well that's alright then. As long as it's not every time we don't need to worry.

one of their dogs attacked a neighbour. She was injured and it took a couple of people to get it under control but it didn't kill her.

I'm sure it was nothing but a scratch and at no point did she fear for her life.

Why on earth would any decent dog owner choose to own an XL Bully? Even if it wasn't the breed, these dogs are only being bought by bad owners.

So true.

My parents took on a border collie from a rescue centre. He had lived in a city flat and was hardly walked his whole life. On about day 2 he was crawling on his belly trying to herd the turkeys on their small holding.
