XL bully shot

Local XL bully shot today. The owner is saying on social media that the dog was harmless but I've seen it go for a a small child before. Why are these dogs 'harmless" until they injure or kill

Not necessarily and zoo keepers have lots of tranquillisers and methods to keep apart specific dogs that have it in for each other. Most dogs can get along with some other dogs, even XL bullies.

Whose going to fund this ?
You idea is nonsensical

Why did you pick an XL bully to own, out of all the other dogs in need of rescuing?

There will be a few isolated cases where someone through circumstances largely out of their own control ended up with responsibility for one of these dogs and is now making the best of the situation and following the law.

However, the majority of people who own an XL Bully bought one deliberately, knowing that they were essentially a loophole for people who could no longer own Pitbulls. Anyone who has obtain one since the law came in is also a criminal.

He’s only an xl according to the government’s broad definitions, that were released long after he’d been home. I went for the dog, from the shelter I worked at, that needed the most immediate help.

StrawberryDream24 · 07/12/2024 22:25

I don't think it's possible to breed a dog to be aggressive

The entire purpose behind breeding bull baiting dogs was to develop aggressive, risk taking, tenacious dogs with a strong bite and hanging on ability.

Bulls don't let themselves be attacked and killed without a fight. They have horns, they gore, the have hooves, they kick and stamp, they have a great deal of weight behind them (for stamping and other things).
They can toss two fully grown men at the same time if they get "excitable" after bull riding in a rodeo, they can crush fully grown men's rib cages - even accidentally - by stamping on them.

Those dogs were bred to bait them and kill them. They were bred to be fearless and extremely aggressive and to continue at risk to themselves.

That was their purpose.

All the XL Bully owners via the fines I would levy.

Yes, I realise the cost of bullets is much cheaper, but I don’t think it morally right to round them all up, take them to a field and then start machine gunning them.

@ScorpioRising83 if you bothered to research it instead of just preaching ignorant chavtastic bollocks you would see that the interbreeding and general fucked up genetics of this breed sets them apart from other strong, powerful breeds. They are simply not wired up right and no amount of training is going to fix that.

Not that most of these owners bother with things like training because they aren't actually interested in the wellbeing of the dog, just using them as a status symbol. Oh well let's hope they don't end up on the wrong side of one of their flip outs.

Chauvinistic 😂

Most dogs are overbred/inbred.

I have researched. I'm sure given the passion (fury) of some posters here, if there was evidence, my nose would've been rubbed in it by now, so desperate they are to discredit my position.

Maybe you should write a business plan for it, and post it to your local MP.
It sounds genius 😂

@ScorpioRising83 chavtastic* not chauvinistic.

I hope your stupidity and naivety around this breed doesn't get you or anyone else hurt.

ScorpioRising83 · 07/12/2024 19:58

I've met tiny terriers that have scared me more than most of the XL bullies I've met.

It's not the breed it's the owners. XLBs are popular with roadmen for defensive purposes.

Not an XL, but the best dogs I've ever met were staffies.

Here we go…….

ScorpioRising83 · 07/12/2024 22:29

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 07/12/2024 22:22

Exactly that. Completely fucked up genetics and feckless owners.

Ah I see we have started to accept the role of the owners.

Glad the debate has shifted to a more sensible position.

StrawberryDream24 · 07/12/2024 22:29

Most dogs are overbred/inbred.

That could lead to collapsing back legs or a brain too big for its skull etc etc in other breeds.

What do you think the problems are for this breed?

Oh chavtastic? Sorry, my mistake, I thought we didn't use that particularly slur.

Marvelous, classism from Mumsnet who woulda thunk it?

Kokomjolk · 07/12/2024 22:32

If you did think it was primarily 'how they're raised' rather than breed instincts (and I quite agree that bad socialisation, bad treatment and lack of training will make any dog worse), how crazy to adopt a large, powerful dog bred to fight that you know has been badly socialised and badly treated!

I'm not really paying attention to the bullies, tbh, I don't think they are scary enough to warrant close attention, and this debate has long sunk into a mean girls style bitchfest.

ScorpioRising83 · 07/12/2024 20:50

I'm talking about training, or lack of it.

You're probably right about inbreeding, that's a general problem with dogs.

A bully attack doesn't always mean death. The roadmen I mentioned earlier, one of their dogs attacked a neighbour. She was injured and it took a couple of people to get it under control but it didn't kill her.

I'm not saying some bullies are not dangerous, I'm saying they are not all dangerous by DNA.

I don't really like the word, but if it fits... there's a lot of hysteria about this topic.

You're right the attacks don't always mean death. Sometimes they are "just" injured.

Here are pictures of a 12 year old in Wales injured by an XL Bully whose parents wanted her injuries to be seen to publicise the danger of these dogs.

It is extremely graphic. Don't click if you don't want to see it.

I went to a local park last week an xl bully off its lead running about with no lead/muzzle on. Owners couldn't care less that they are breaking the law.
I had my 2 dogs with me at the time and had to abandon the walk and go quickly to the car. It is so frightening coming across these dogs. They can flip at the flick of a switch like having a lion on the loose so unpredictable.
Also the amount of dogs I see that are so uncontrollable when on walks and on social media in my area.

Edited

Hopefully you reported them? You might save a life or a dogs life. They need reporting whenever they are off lead and unmuzzled.

You're not really paying attention to "bullies", but you're quoting words from their post (or words you think you read in their post) and putting laughing emojis next to it?

Sophiasguitar · 07/12/2024 22:15

I’ve got a dog that I’ve exempted as an XL. A rescue I got 3.5 years ago. He was in dire need of a decent home having been abused by previous owners so badly it took a year to rehabilitate him and mend his bones. I think I’m a decent owner although according to this thread I need to either be sent to prison or killed alongside the dog.

I guess I just find it completely baffling that anyone at all would choose to live with an animal capable of killing them, or killing any guest to their house. Do you live in constant fear of your dog getting out? Or being triggered by something?

MemorableTrenchcoat · 07/12/2024 22:38

ScorpioRising83 · 07/12/2024 22:23

I've been verbally abused on this thread for stating what is, I feel, a valid logical position on the debate.

Dogs don't have language so they use teeth.

Precisely. Like all dogs, XL Bullies cannot consider the consequences of their actions. Unlike most other breeds, they are so powerful as to be able to overwhelm and kill a man with relative ease.

StrawberryDream24 · 07/12/2024 22:39

I have the feeling some posters are on the sauce this evening.

esem · 07/12/2024 22:41

I happen to think people are more important than dogs - if any dog attacked my grand-child I would want to shoot the dog and I wouldnt give it a second thought
