So..

proper Gen X …

the thing that mark my generation out are this :

free school milk at breaks then said milk being taken away

music we were into typically Duran Duran, Wham, Culture Club

common for Dads to drive but not mums

The domestic sitcom - e.g Terry and June being popular when we were prime TV watching age

being at the cusp of the O Level/CSE / GCSE transition

SOME* Less academic kids did YTS - some of the more academic kids looked down their noses at this option

Disco Roller skates in vogue 🙌

VERY un PC language at school

if anyone’s a similar age to me, what are your memories!!

oh and we loved Swap Shop and a good annual !

Liverpool FC winning everything

Grumpy bus drivers in the morning

drivinmecrazy · 07/12/2024 12:21

All of the above!
Also ski yoghurts for pudding, recording the charts on Sunday, ice on the side of my bedroom window (used to love chipping this away in the morning 😂) and playing out until one mother or another would rattle the saucepan for teatime

TV adverts being a story, remember Gold Blend ads?

Grandstand or World of Sport on Saturday afternoon

Leg warmers being a thing.

ElfAndSafetyBored · 07/12/2024 12:26

Having to actually go all the way to a friend’s house to see if they could play - only to find them out (sob).

I still like Duran Duran. Great live band and John Taylor, still the best looking man to walk the Earth (though could do with a good meal or two maybe).

Hoppinggreen · 07/12/2024 12:27

I remember most of that.
Its true about Mums driving/working. Mine was PA to a local Businessman and drove to work and was a bit unusual. We did live somewhere pretty backwards though

Gold Blend ads were not just ads, they were a mini soap opera.

Staringatthemoon · 07/12/2024 12:27

Oh, John ( Nigel) Taylor😍😍😍

Yes ski yogurts are still a thing.

House frozen mousses you used to get out of the freezer - super mousse?

Angel delight and swiss roll

Bunty comic and Look in?

MistressoftheDarkSide · 07/12/2024 12:33

Patent black ballet pump style shoes with a bow on the front. (I was not allowed these in 1983. I am still bitter).

The early Walkman - size and shape and weight of a breeze block but the joy of feeling as though your life was a movie with a New Romantic soundtrack more than made up for it.

Listening to Radio Luxembourg in the wee small hours if you were an insomniac because it was that or silence.

Those pink foam Papillon curler things that were supposed to give you a fake spiral perm but left you looking like Crystal Tips.

Just 17 being new, dangerous, and hidden from strict parents.

Edited

I remember Look In and Jackie magazine too. It has multiple choice quizzes about boyfriends that we used to pour over. 😬

Man with moustache was Dickie Davis. We were only allowed to watch Swap Shop never Tiswas. Loved Bullseye on a Sunday.

Christmaseason · 07/12/2024 12:40

Why Don’t you and Take Hart on TV.

JoshLymanSwagger · 07/12/2024 12:41

ZX Spectrum, Daley Thompson Decathlon and a cassette player.

Before that a Binatone "pong" game with dial controllers.

Mochudubh · 07/12/2024 12:42

Long hot summers. Sunscreen was unheard of and if you got sunburn your mum would slather you with calamine lotion which dried white and powdery so you looked like a ghost.

Then a couple of days later your skin would peel off like filo pastry.

And swimming in the river or loch wasn't called "wild swimming" it was just swimming.

Biking out in a bunch of 10-12 year olds (no adults) to above loch along a narrow, twisty road for a beach barbecue then back again hours later. I drove that road for the first time in years recently and the thought of such young kids doing that today makes me shudder.

WearsBlackEatsChocolateAvoidsPeople · 07/12/2024 12:43

Spending my Sunday afternoons listening to and taping the top 40 so I could listen to it all week on my Walkman.

Hotbrushing my hair into a New Romantics flick then spraying half a can of L'oreal bold hold to keep it in place (I think I single handedly contributed to the hole in the ozone layer).

Watching lots of tv with my parents (my teens never do this now), loved 70's and 80's tv, quality watching.

BlastedPimples · 07/12/2024 12:43

RaRa skirts

Pedal pushers

Those headbands with springs on and glittery balls bouncing around on the springs

Also plastic lace up shoes in red or blue with a white trim.

Pixie boots

Short hair sprayed up into a fan shape in the side of your head.

Fan earrings

Matching plastic earrings, belt and bangles.

Elastics.
