So..

proper Gen X …

the thing that mark my generation out are this :

free school milk at breaks then said milk being taken away

music we were into typically Duran Duran, Wham, Culture Club

common for Dads to drive but not mums

The domestic sitcom - e.g Terry and June being popular when we were prime TV watching age

being at the cusp of the O Level/CSE / GCSE transition

SOME* Less academic kids did YTS - some of the more academic kids looked down their noses at this option

Disco Roller skates in vogue 🙌

VERY un PC language at school

if anyone’s a similar age to me, what are your memories!!

oh and we loved Swap Shop and a good annual !

Liverpool FC winning everything

Glitter on cheeks

Dear Cathy & Claire

Smash Hits

Recording the top 40 on Sunday afternoon on Radio 1

The first time Channel 4 came on

Who shot JR?

Freda the tortoise going into hibernation

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 07/12/2024 13:00

Awww - great thread! Nothing much to add - you've all said it all. Did anyone mention Smash Hits magazine?

Never experienced this though Shock:

Teachers throwing board rubbers at you or whacking the metre ruler on your desk when you were talking in class

JoshLymanSwagger · 07/12/2024 13:00

Lipgloss in a glass bottle with a roller ball on the top. Tasted of e additives and fake fruit.🤢

Mochudubh · 07/12/2024 13:00

Nicking Pick n Mix or make-up from Woolies, it was a rite of passage. No wonder they went bust.

JoshLymanSwagger · 07/12/2024 13:02

Getting your first bit of "proper" jewellery.

Helen, if you're out there, do you still have your gold coffee bean?

Nesbi · 07/12/2024 13:02

When I was properly young - Button Moon, Chorlton and the Wheelies. Rentaghost, Number 73 “Hey you, get ready get on your feet get into gear and hit the street…”

Saturdays of The A-Team, Dallas, Dynasty, 3-2-1, so so many sit coms (loved The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin)

RomainingToBeSeen · 07/12/2024 13:03

Some great 'remembers' on this Richard Digance video.

Idiot mittens! With elastic that went through your coat sleeves. 🧤

The Top 40 really mattered ij those days too. I remember having a 20 minute conversation at Guides when a particular song by the Jam went straight to number one.

Also songs staying at number one for MONTHS

Ultravox - Vienna
Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart
Spandau Ballet - True
Wham! - Wake Me Up Before You GoGo

I feel like these songs were at number one for months on end or maybe it just seemed like that.

Vienna never got to number one. It was kept off by Shaddap ya face 🤣

sproutsandparsnips · 07/12/2024 13:05

Matching lunch boxes and flasks - I had a Holly Hobby one.....

wastingtimeonhere · 07/12/2024 13:05

You had a tv series, not a season. Usually, half an hour/ hour a week, you waited with anticipation of the next episode. No multiple times a week and streaming.
Grange Hill! Tucker Jenkins and Co...

JoshLymanSwagger · 07/12/2024 13:07

@sproutsandparsnips Started off with Snoopy, but when it eventually lost the handle, I was given an ET one.

I just wanted another Snoopy one, Mum. How hard could it be?

BelgianBeers · 07/12/2024 13:07

Mochudubh · 07/12/2024 13:07

@RomainingToBeSeen

I need idiot mittens< I can't keep a pair of gloves for more than a week.

Off to rummage for some elastic.

JoshLymanSwagger · 07/12/2024 13:08

Books.

Remember them?

Oxford English Dictionary, reference books, Chalet School.

Purplecatshopaholic · 07/12/2024 13:11

Aww I have found my people. I remember the arguments over Tiswas versus Swap Shop (we weren’t supposed to watch Tiswas but my brother preferred it - the dying fly being a particular favourite! What was that even all about?!)
Rimmel Heather Shimmer stills exists! My friend still wears it.
Ringing home and letting it ring three times to let my mum know I was on the way home.
My dads Fiat Strada.
Learning soooo much from Jackie magazine.
Weekend desserts of angel delight, and artic roll.
The belt still existing in school..

A computer room at school (BBC Microcomputer) which was only populated by nerdy boys. Girls and those not doing science, you will have no need of a computer in your life.

Yes, we did needlework 🙄 I was crap at it although still have the cat cuddly cat I made 😂
I remember being marked down to a B in technical drawing because the teacher was adamant I could not have done it myself and must have asked my older brother to help 🤨

Screamingabdabz · 07/12/2024 13:13

Wagon wheel were massive and I remember when crisps were 7p!

Scrunch drying your hair in the 80s and watching the Young Ones.

Kids getting slapped and man handled at school by teachers and it being totally normal.

Going into town on Saturday and dressing up for it. Being bored out of your mind on Sunday until a roast dinner that your mum cooked and then taping the Top 40 off the radio.

timetoreset · 07/12/2024 13:15

Playing out lots
Going round to friends houses after school if we fancied it (the mums didn't worry)
Our territory was as far as we could cycle on our bikes
Walking to school on my own from the age of 5
Building dams in streams

(I grew up in a small Scottish village)

My mum has always said I'm "very independent "! Not surprisingly imo!!

Mirabai · 07/12/2024 13:25

I was born 1970.

We were into hiphop, rare groove, old soul, Prince, Bob Marley.

We wore Levi’s 501s, DMs, cowboy boots and dressed like the girls in the Addicted to Love video when we went clubbing - LBD + bright red lipstick.

I did the last year of O level when exams were still hard.

It was still the Cold War, I loved espionage thrillers, My Beautiful Laundrette, Dirty Dancing, Blue Velvet, Withnail & I.

Read Milan Kundera, Bonfire of the Vanities, Rachel Papers, Riders & Rivals.

A Saturday night in would be Blind Date + Casualty.

Teasall · 07/12/2024 13:29

TV Programmes I remember from the 70's:
Sapphire & Steel
The Onedian Line (not sure on spelling)
Original Poldark
The Goodies
Kenny Everitt show
Spike Milligan Q series
Charlie's Angels - used to play this with my 2 cousins on a Saturday while my dad took my brothers to football.
I, Claudius

Think my parents were fairly out there with what they let me watch because I was the youngest Grin

FenywHysbys · 07/12/2024 13:31

playing out all day, often taking friends baby and toddler brothers and sisters to play as well ( mums couldn’t wait to hand them over)

10p mix from the shop

Bath on Sunday afternoon- wasn’t allowed outside afterwards as you’d catch a cold

Not being allowed to start the Christmas sweets until after 7pm Christmas eve

Miss Selfridge makeup

collecting novelty pencil rubbers

writing to international penpals via a club

I accidentally sewed the toy duck I was making to my school skirt in a needlework lesson once and had to stay behind to unpick it! I was so shit at sewing (still am, even though I'm now a good knitter and crocheter). My needlework teacher hated me!

😂 You sound as good as at needlework ❤️

NeedToChangeName · 07/12/2024 13:34

Watching The Onedin Line on TV on Sunday night

Bernard Matthews turkey in a roll (bleurgh)

Angel Delight as a treat. Usually Instant Whip

ANonEMouseYouSir · 07/12/2024 13:39

Listening to the Top 40 on a Sunday night with my fingers poised over the "play" and "record" buttons and being FURIOUS when Steve Wright talked over the end of a song. Following along with the words in Smash Hits.

Buying cheap jewellery off the market so that your ears itched after an hour and you got a green line on your neck when the gold or silver colour rubbed off.

The amazement of Artic roll. A swiss roll AND ice-cream all in one?!

Making a 3 course meal for Home Ec. Veg soup, shepherd's pie and apple crumble and serving it nicely to the teacher. My poor teacher having to taste all that from 25 fed up 16 year old girls.
