So..

proper Gen X …

the thing that mark my generation out are this :

free school milk at breaks then said milk being taken away

music we were into typically Duran Duran, Wham, Culture Club

common for Dads to drive but not mums

The domestic sitcom - e.g Terry and June being popular when we were prime TV watching age

being at the cusp of the O Level/CSE / GCSE transition

SOME* Less academic kids did YTS - some of the more academic kids looked down their noses at this option

Disco Roller skates in vogue 🙌

VERY un PC language at school

if anyone’s a similar age to me, what are your memories!!

oh and we loved Swap Shop and a good annual !

Liverpool FC winning everything

Mr Benn

SwordToFlamethrower · 07/12/2024 14:21

77 here. 2p bus fair to school or town

10p mix

Half pennies

Glass bottles of pop that you cleaned out and returned for a refund

Going to school in the snow and making epic skiddy patches of black ice to slide on

French skipping, handstands, cartwheeling, imaginative play

Care bears, transformers, real ghostbusters, thundercats, mysterious cities of gold. TV theme tunes!

Golden girls, fresh Prince, wonder years, neighbours and home and away

Lego that wasn't gendered

Atari, nes and Sega that weren't gendered

Planning phone calls so when the phone rings at a certain time, you can shout "it's for me!"

The fear of skinning your knees and elbows in the playground made you really good at risk assessment and you really honed your skills

Playing out, knocking on for your friends

Wakaday with timmy mallet

Staringatthemoon · 07/12/2024 14:22

Although hiding in changing rooms doesn’t seem so good nowadays🧐

@Barleycat No, i don't think so, my school was a, Catholic Primary in Liverpool.

Shame. Mine was in Birmingham. Must have been a common thing. We used to go into the boys playground to deliberately annoy them!

Collecting novelty rubbers and stickers - scented felt tip pens

Oooh scratch and sniff stickers!! I had a coconut pudding the other day that smelled just like one 😆

MistressoftheDarkSide · 07/12/2024 14:27

Was out shopping with my Dad the other day and saw Ski fruit mousses. Haven't laid eyes on them in decades, and when I last did, they came in a waxed paper churn shaped pot with a foil lid. Had a wistful sigh, and dear old Dad offered to buy me some. I declined, because I know from the Wagon Wheel debacle when my kids were young that it just WON'T BE THE SAME. No full fat creaminess and no sugar 😭 ......I won't get fooled again.

I was born in 1974. Army brat so moved a lot. Music for me was Adam and the Ants and Madness in primary school. Goth and synth pop early teens then Madchester/indie and rave. Smash hits was the best.

I vaguely remember cute little mini glass bottles of warm milk at break time. Playing out for hours even in foreign countries we had only just moved to. Every time we moved house being told to ‘go outside and make some friends’.

Kids have really lost out on free play and over protective parenting but I’m glad there is more MH awareness. I was so unhappy (in my room listening to goth). I hid it by getting smashed from 15 onwards which was completely normal at the time.

Ooh love this!
Such nostalgia!
Ski Sunday, the muppet show on a Sunday evening (I was allowed to stay up for this).
The snooker world championship!
My mum used to go late night food shopping on a Thursday while my dad looked after us after work. She said it was her 'me time'......
Bejam
Gardeners question time on a Sunday afternoon after lunch. Very boring.
Those ball hoppers which was a ball with a plastic rim which you jumped up and down on (not space hoppers)
I had a pogo stick which I never mastered.

Had to Google those ball hoppers for their name, they're called rock n hopper. We had them too. Looked like Saturn. Also got skateboards with wings.

Sunday night I always think Spitting Image. So many times I stayed up late watching that with school the next morning.

MikeRafone · 07/12/2024 14:33

Some lip gloss we used to buy that you painted on with a brush attacked to the lid and it stung like hell. I cannot remember its name, it was clear with red writing I think. Lipstick would then take around 3 days to remove!

Mum spending all Sunday making a roast and dessert from scratch, including Yorkshires, while dad sat on his arse watching telly.
