So..

proper Gen X …

the thing that mark my generation out are this :

free school milk at breaks then said milk being taken away

music we were into typically Duran Duran, Wham, Culture Club

common for Dads to drive but not mums

The domestic sitcom - e.g Terry and June being popular when we were prime TV watching age

being at the cusp of the O Level/CSE / GCSE transition

SOME* Less academic kids did YTS - some of the more academic kids looked down their noses at this option

Disco Roller skates in vogue 🙌

VERY un PC language at school

if anyone’s a similar age to me, what are your memories!!

oh and we loved Swap Shop and a good annual !

Liverpool FC winning everything

Matey was basically paint stripper IIRC.
My sister and I got a Mr Frosty. It was crap.

I worked my way through all the Sweet Valley Twins books, and loved them. I can see the cover illustrations now. Wasn't so into SVH. Loved Lois Duncan though, and would get those out of the library repeatedly.

Blue or green wet-look gel for our ridiculously tight corkscrew perms!

Constance carroll make up.

Jelly bags and shoes.

Pencil skirts with matching belt, bangles and beads.

Heavy-knit jumpers.

Satin trousers with a perry belt.

Towelling t-shirts.

Neon ankle socks.

Ha, no you're right there was definitely a brummie pig. Think he was just called Pig. And an ostrich called Octavia

Sitting on the stairs in the hall, talking to my friends on the phone while doodling all over the cover of the Yellow Pages, trying to ignore how cold it was and hoping my dad wouldn't come along and start moaning about the phone bill. Can anyone else still remember their friends' phone numbers from 40 years ago? This was the phone we had:

We had one like that but in green .
You had to remember everyone's phone number , no auto dial then !

@FlutteryButterfly We had Le Francais D Aujourd Hui with the adventures of the Bertillion family told in comic strip fashion.

I still remember the kids were called Phillipe Marie-Claire and Alain. Think the parents were Jean and Annette.

Annette fell off her bicycle and shouted "sacre bleu" a lot.

FKAT · 08/12/2024 23:06

Ooh like this thread.

I still use a wide toothed comb that came free with Mizz magazine in 1991. It's outlasted cars, white goods, relationships and will see out armageddon.

My kids watched Muppet Christmas Carol last night and the small one was absolutely baffled by it having never encountered the Henson oeuvre before. I had to explain that in the 80s Kermit and Miss Piggy were the biggest stars on TV.

RM2013 · 08/12/2024 23:06

I remember so many of these things!! I was an averagely academic student but didn’t know what I wanted to do career wise so did end up doing a YTS. £29.50 a week wages which went up to £35 in the 2nd year!!
my Nan used to buy us artic roll and those supermousses that you could have chilled or frozen. 10p mix ups and if you were really savvy you could get more than 10 sweets because the mojos were 1/2p
Saturday tea time tv, the A team. Jelly shoes and if you were really lucky the matching bag. Lots of beads and bangles. Sun in which made my permed hair go a nice shade of orange. Electric blue mascara and rimmels heather shimmer lipstick. Walkmans and taping the charts on Sundays.
going into town with friends and buying the latest posters and a nail polish.

happy memories

My mum didn't let me watch Tiswas. Or Grange Hill.
