Just a few concerns about this whole GW thing. Caveat: I do not condone behaviour that is illegal.

  1. It does kind of look like a whole bunch of privileged TV luvvies are clamouring to denounce someone with really quite humble roots. I grew up in London and am constantly paranoid about how I come across to my mainly middle class colleagues. The thing is, middle class and privileged people operate by a set of unwritten rules. It’s like a full time job in itself trying to emulate their way of interacting, lest you be called out for not being ‘nice’ enough or doing something odd to them, like forgetting to start an email with ‘Hope you are well?’. Only, they won’t let you know to your face that you’ve accidentally been too sharp or direct, or maybe that your joke wasn’t woke enough - no, that stuff just goes straight to HR.
  2. The equality act 2010 makes it the employer’s responsibility to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. Why wasn’t all this lewd stuff dealt with? GW said that no one had made a formal complaint. Again, it makes me wonder whether the middle class luvvies just didn’t want to call things out at the time because it’s ‘beneath’ them to even consider doing something about it.
  3. Even though he’s apologised, the public doesn’t think that’s good enough. It’s like only perfect people get to keep their careers. Woe betide you if you said something crass on twitter 10 years ago, or got caught speeding or something.

Of course, lots of you would want to shout me down over this, but you know what? We’re all mums here and many of us have sons. Boys and young men do and say crass things. GW hasn’t raped or systematically abused anyone. It doesn’t make what’s happened right, but I also don’t think it’s right that swarms of pitch-fork waving strangers get to play judge, jury and executioner. I’m a big fan of forgiveness. Am I the only one?

It’s coming on to a thread and just posting without reading or engaging with any of the other posts.

Thanks!

Ploppers drive me nuts. ‘I have barely read past a headline and a facebook post, I have given this particular matter almost no independent thought, I’ll tell you what, I’ll plop into an on-going conversation with my short sentence opinion which is so good absolutely no-one else would’ve come up with. They’re all going to think I’m bloody brilliant’

@MurdoMunro at this point they have got to be trolling us. We are almost a week into this story, how can they claim to know Wallace is "in a spot of bother" but not that women have complained. I mean he even mentioned it in his non apology video.

Isxmasoveryet · 04/12/2024 17:03

Why didn't they speak up at the time instead of jumping on the bandwagon is my question

They did. They weren't listened to.

It’s highly likely. To wear us down? They have seriously underestimated us then. The whole thread was probably a troll attempt but we took it and ran with it.

Maybe they’re laughing at us? Winding up the hysterical wee girls and harpies and this will cow us. Nah. Right back at ya sockonyerbollocks mate, did you buy that from the Mothercare dead stock sale?

Unfortunately I couldn't find one with the words "middle aged" in it.

I like it just the way it is. My neice is 27 and she’s both feet, up to her ovaries, into this. We stand in a line.

I find it really embarrassing when a story about GW pops up on Facebook and you see women commenting about how the BBC are wrong and they should keep GW on Masterchef. It just looks like they are pathetically trying to impress men. They were not there when all the incidents happened so are in no position to claim that the women are all lying. I'm embarrassed for them.

Should’ve taken his laundry round to his mummy then. Bet the elf moves to the kitchen tonight and shits in his milk, even that wee prick the elf thinks he’s more alpha.

This is spot on. They are misguided enough to think it makes them look cool and "not like the other girls". Or women in this case.

Gowlett · 04/12/2024 18:31

I know what you mean about MC media types.
You definitely have a point, there, I think, TBF.

Fizbosshoes · 04/12/2024 18:43

The question shouldn't be
why didn't people say something at the time? (Aherm they did - as far back as 2008)

But
Why were the multiple complaints not acted upon...?
Why would someone keep their job after 13(or more) similar complaints?
And why does this kind of thing keep happening....?

And, when you see that the middle class middle aged women get nowhere by doing the supposedly right thing and complaining, then surely that gives you a clue why younger, less secure, less well paid, women might not think it's worth the bother ..

(I've already made this point but it's for the newcomers and ploppers)

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 04/12/2024 18:43

While I do think this type of misogyny is an extremely pressing issue and Greg should be cancelled back into the stone age, I'm slightly surprised by the reaction, for example keir's comment.

I think it's mostly because of the middle class and age video, and partly because of slow news lately, greg must have been thrilled about the coup in south Korea. Perhaps it is a critical mass like Weinstein? Hopefully. I'm definitely tired of this shit.

StrikeForever · 04/12/2024 19:40

As a woman who grew up working class and became middle class by education and profession, I did realise that sexually harassing and touching up women being unacceptable was an “unwritten rule”. What nonsense (at best)!

I do agree that a major issue is why these sleazy men are not shut down early in their employment. The BBC in particular have learned nothing from the Saville scandal 🙄

I don’t care whether people think I’m brilliant or not, I don’t have the time or inclination to read 34 pages. I suspect others don’t too 🤷‍♀️

I’ve sort of been reading along, or trying to, but don’t want to comment now incase I’m a plopper 😂

2 pages would’ve done. Even just the first page. Or a paragraph or two beyond a newspaper headline. If you haven’t got the outline information about the topic and you don’t care what people think why on earth would you enter a conversation about it? For someone so short of time it feels like a pretty big waste of your time 🤷‍♀️

It's often useful to read all the OPs posts (one in this case!) and the last page or two at least?

Hmm maybe half a dozen posts would have done the trick.

As I say the same point has been on pretty much every page

And you seem to have lots of time and inclination telling us you haven't got any time or inclination.

Funny dat.

He’s not some poor immature uneducated boy. He’s a 60 year old man who should bloody well know better.

Im not patronising enough to hold working class people to a lower standard than middle class people.

I’m a big fan of forgiveness.
Why would you forgive someone who has only doubled down on their actions?

Exactly, his only plus he can afford to, and be forgotten, he has some odd ideas

Middlemarch123 · 04/12/2024 21:18

It gets worse, his Ghost writer has given an interview to Newsnight, on BBC news…don’t read if you’re eating.
