Just a few concerns about this whole GW thing. Caveat: I do not condone behaviour that is illegal.

  1. It does kind of look like a whole bunch of privileged TV luvvies are clamouring to denounce someone with really quite humble roots. I grew up in London and am constantly paranoid about how I come across to my mainly middle class colleagues. The thing is, middle class and privileged people operate by a set of unwritten rules. It’s like a full time job in itself trying to emulate their way of interacting, lest you be called out for not being ‘nice’ enough or doing something odd to them, like forgetting to start an email with ‘Hope you are well?’. Only, they won’t let you know to your face that you’ve accidentally been too sharp or direct, or maybe that your joke wasn’t woke enough - no, that stuff just goes straight to HR.
  2. The equality act 2010 makes it the employer’s responsibility to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. Why wasn’t all this lewd stuff dealt with? GW said that no one had made a formal complaint. Again, it makes me wonder whether the middle class luvvies just didn’t want to call things out at the time because it’s ‘beneath’ them to even consider doing something about it.
  3. Even though he’s apologised, the public doesn’t think that’s good enough. It’s like only perfect people get to keep their careers. Woe betide you if you said something crass on twitter 10 years ago, or got caught speeding or something.

Of course, lots of you would want to shout me down over this, but you know what? We’re all mums here and many of us have sons. Boys and young men do and say crass things. GW hasn’t raped or systematically abused anyone. It doesn’t make what’s happened right, but I also don’t think it’s right that swarms of pitch-fork waving strangers get to play judge, jury and executioner. I’m a big fan of forgiveness. Am I the only one?

I haven't RTFT but it seems quite offensive to suggest working class people are inherently sexist and unboundaried. I don't think being sleazy is a "class" thing

MurdoMunro · 04/12/2024 16:53

Bloody hell @RedToothBrush I keep getting reminded of the image of his pubes and the top of his cock. Please don’t say ‘bollocks’ again it’s nearly tea time.

Victim blaming is just as bad as the deed IMO

Yep and it's really disheartening when it's other women doing it. Women supporting women... so long as their not accusing a working class man.

Just the name , Gregg, reminds me of stodgy sausage rolls and pastries.

Don't blame me for your over active imagination!!!

Pas me the brain bleach for that comment please!

Why didn't they speak up at the time instead of jumping on the bandwagon is my question

“Boys and young men do and say crass things”

erm and you think that’s ok? As a mum you should be teaching your sons not to say crass things to women or about women. As a mum you should be teaching your daughters not to put up with crass comments.

As far as this particular individual is concerned, I’m sure he was probably warned at some point but his ego won over common sense. Did you see the comment he made on Sunday, sorry he’s not coming across as some scape goat cheeky chappy!

I have started now calling it The Bakers but I love a g....reggs sausage roll and pretty much everything else they do and refuse to let Humpty Dumpty with pubes ruin that.

Why are so many posters incapable of reading the thread

MANY DID COMPLAIN BUT WERE IGNORED

Northernladette · 04/12/2024 17:22

It’s obviously slow news at the moment. Sick of reading about it. If he does something drastic, there’ll be a ‘Be Kind’ movement again.

I'm working class but I would never confuse sexual harassment with something outside of middle class social norms or a set of 'unwritten rules' as you put it.

It's not acceptable for boys and young men to be 'crass' as you put it and say and do such things.

You may see this as light behaviour but it's the tip of the ice berg when it comes to brazen misogyny. This behaviour is degrading and threatening to women and our acceptance of it will only lead to more sexual violence. Violence against women is at an all time high.

We are also mothers of daughters on MN - I think you need to take a good long look at your values.

We also have the responsibility of raising the next generation of men, who behave differently, and address behaviour of other men when they see it too. I take that responsibility really seriously as a victim of DA/SA.

Aghast. As a working class female. This isn't a class thing. This is a behaviour thing. And occasionally bad language or naughty jokes happen, but with friends not in the workplace! And certainly his behaviour is more than just a few lude clumsy jokes.

I don't think so.

I think we are seeing the formation of 'the can't be fucked with this nonsense' movement.

It’s not a complicated story. I mean what’s being reported in the media is that complaints were made and nothing happened. (Other than him losing the In The Factory gig.) That’s literally the story. How do you read it and not spot that element of it?

The point that many women complained is on at least two thirds of them!

There should be some way to pin this to the top of every new page, might save @RedToothBrush from wearing their fingers out. And the rest of us from having to read the same fucking stupid annoying "but whyyyyyy" questions.

Indeed the story is more that women complained for years about his behaviour and were ignored is THE story and more significant than the simple 'Greg Wallace is a perv' in my opinion.

If you missed that, you've really missed the point.

@RedToothBrush , What is 'Plopping'? I've seen it referred to before on Mumsnet, but google hasn't given any answers.
What is it in relation to MN?

JT's PR company in overdrive today with lots of "sadface" "shocked" pictures/articles which "obviously" cannot comment due to the investigations.

Ploppers drive me nuts. ‘I have barely read past a headline and a facebook post, I have given this particular matter almost no independent thought, I’ll tell you what, I’ll plop into an on-going conversation with my short sentence opinion which is so good absolutely no-one else would’ve come up with. They’re all going to think I’m bloody brilliant’
